Lonely Planet er uundværlig for alle rygsækrejsende og personer med mod på eventyr. Det er det største forlag inden for rejsebøger, hvilket ikke siger så lidt. Forlaget blev grundlagt af ægteparret Maureen og Tony Wheeler, der efter en rejse gennem Europa og Asien, besluttede sig for at skrive en rejsebog om deres oplevelser. Det de oplevede ved at rejse billigt og med sindet åbent, var så fantastisk at de besluttede sig for at skrive det ned. I 1973 udgav de således deres første rejsebog ”Across Asia on the Cheap”, der hurtigt blev en stor succes. Efter blot en uge, var rejsebogen blevet solgt i 1500 eksemplarer og forlaget voksede. I 1975 udgav parret således deres anden rejsebog ”South-East Asia on a shoestring”, der også gik en og blev en stor succes. I dag har forlaget kontorer rundt omkring i hele verden, hvilket blandt andet tæller Australien, Storbritannien, USA, Indien og Kina. Forlaget har derudover 400 mennesker ansat, samt 200 forfattere tilknyttet. Ønsker man at opleve et land og folk på tæt hold, undgå de værste turistfælder og se de skjulte perler, så har Lonely Planet helt sikkert den rigtige bog til dig.
