Nailah C. Robinson and her mother, Dr. Shanetta Weatherspoon, came up with the idea for this book based on their everyday lived experiences together. They believe that people can relate across cultures and ethnicities. Momma, is this professional? Is inspired by Nailah's journey of self-appreciation. It is about a young girl reconciling her identity, her self-esteem and the manifestation of womanhood to a conscious level, based on mirroring her mother. It is as much a message of being "enough" to young girls, as it is the same message to the role models and parents who will read this book with their protégés. The book is for girls between the ages of 4 - 12. However, its purpose is a message to women and girls of all ages. The purpose of the book is to help young girls understand this simple truth: YOU ARE ENOUGH! Research suggests that girls struggle with self-esteem, self-worth and confidence at a very early age. Unaddressed, the issues can lead to serious challenges and risky behaviors as a teenager and even into adulthood. It has also been shown that minority girls' challenges with self-esteem are intensified by intersectionality (i.e. the intersection of race, gender and socioeconomic status) that may increase their experienced hardships. The Responsible Me! is inspired by Lil Ray's journey of embracing his responsibilities. It is about a young boy reconciling his identity by taking accountability of his decisions and actions through accepting and actualizing his daily responsibilities. It is as much a message to youth of the importance of being responsible, as it is the same message to parents and role models who will read this book with their protégé. The book is for children between the ages of 3 - 12. However, the message reaches people of all ages. The purpose of the book is to help children understand the meaning of responsibility! According to the Center for Parenting Education (2022), the most common desire of parents is that their children develop a sound sense of individual and collective responsibility. Responsibility is not only about the individual impact of the child's decisions/actions but also about how those decisions/actions may affect others.
