'Like Crécy itself, this book is a triumph and the tale it tells gives an old story new life.' BERNARD CORNWELL, bestselling author of The Last Kingdom series The battle of Crécy in 1346 is one of the most famous and widely studied military engagements in history. The repercussions of this battle were felt for hundreds of years, and the exploits of those fighting reached the status of legend. Yet cutting-edge research has shown that nearly everything that has been written about this dramatic event may be wrong. In this new study, Michael Livingston reveals how modern scholars have used archived manuscripts, satellite technologies and traditional fieldwork to help unlock what was arguably the battle's greatest secret: the location of the now quiet fields where so many thousands died. Crécy: Battle of Five Kings is a story of past and present. It is a new history of one of the most important battles of the Middle Ages: a compelling narrative account that nonetheless adheres to the highest scholarly standards in its detail. It is also an account that incorporates the most cutting-edge revelations and the personal story of how those discoveries were made.

Set in the 14th Century in the dramatic landscape of Holy Island and North Northumberland, the novel is based on a real historic person. Isolde, daughter of the priest, is excommunicated from the church with other members of her community of Lowyk for not paying the corn tithes to the monastery on Holy Island in 1353. The novel brings to life a girl who stands out from this distant time and deserves to be remembered. As a small child she crosses the dangerous sands at night that separate Holy Island from the mainland and somehow survives the incoming tide. Is this survival, as the church believes, 'miraculous', a sign Isolde is being protected for a special reason? It is a question of miracles. Cover design ©¿Abigail Edgar. Image of Isolde inspired by an angel in a stained glass window in the church of St John, Lowick.

This fragile, fragile philosophy unexpectedly developed an enormous power of conviction and direction. It invented individual rights, it founded our way of thinking, it created science in the third century B.C. in Alexandria, it invented democracy. From what characteristics does all this power, the fragile philosophy, derive? These ancestors of ours, the classical philosophers, had postulated three things, then forgotten. a) The word is not the thing, the sentence is not the fact, the language is not the world. Not even an image of them. b) Our thinking is groundless, because the initial concepts, let's say the axioms from which we start to think, are not based on anything, because they are precisely the first. c) Thought, rational discursive intellect, and language are the same, logos, one word indicates one and the other. Thought and language are the same thing.

First Place, Chaucer Award for Early Historical FictionFinalist for INDIES Book of the YearIn 1534, Michelangelo is no longer safe in Florence. Pope Clement VII, his childhood friend, summons him to Rome not only to protect him from his enemies but also to demand he paint a masterpiece that will be the Medici Pope's legacy-the Last Judgment, a fresco for the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. At the same moment, fate brings the celebrated but reclusive poet Vittoria Colonna to Rome to petition the pope as a favor to a dear friend. The two encounter each other briefly in the Vatican, and Michelangelo sketches from memory the enigmatic beauty of the poet's face. When she sees the drawing, she recognizes in the artist the kindred spirit she has found elusive throughout the course of her turbulent life. This fleeting moment is the foundation of a profound relationship between the two artists that feeds both their creativity and their need for connection in the midst of war-torn 16th century Italy.

"The Man Who Laughs: A Romance of English History" by Victor Hugo is a compelling historical novel set in 17th-century England. The narrative revolves around the character Gwynplaine, a young boy whose face is disfigured into a perpetual grin, following a traumatic event. As he grows up, Gwynplaine navigates the complexities of society, grappling with issues of identity, love, and social injustice. Hugo's poignant exploration of Gwynplaine's experiences delves into themes of societal prejudice, human resilience, and the quest for inner dignity. Through vivid and evocative storytelling, Hugo weaves a tale that reflects the challenges of the human condition and the struggle for compassion and understanding in a world marked by superficial judgments. "The Man Who Laughs" stands as a powerful testament to Hugo's mastery of narrative and his profound insights into the complexities of human emotion and societal dynamics.

In this volume, we follow the coat of arms into situations and zones of contact. Since inception, communication has been in the very nature of the heraldic phenomenon. Hence its remarkable ability to adapt to the circumstances that, from the 15th century onwards, brought populations from all over the world into contact. Our overarching question serves as an attempt to learn more about the modalities of negotiation in contact zones. To what extent were local actors able to develop their own attitude towards invasive and invading colonizers and missionaries by adopting and transforming the European image form of the coat of arms? This departure point leads even further: to think of heraldic emblems as a visual instrument capable of establishing communication not only between different cultures, but also between different eras, and even between the human and divine spheres. The book's interdisciplinarity, the temporal breadth of the collected case studies, and the variety of methodological approaches reflect the dynamism and diversity of the topic itself.

No one can possibly reach him, but within the day, Aldous Pitchcott is dead.Aumary discovers that many in the town wished Pitchcott harm, but how did the killer reach him? Aumary and his friends are baffled! Can Aumary reveal the guilty party before the murderer strikes again?Worldes Blis, a strange thirteenth-century song, provides the backdrop to the fourteenth novel in Susanna M. Newstead's Savernake Medieval Murder Mystery Novel series.Author Interview1) How difficult is it to research settings for a Medieval Murder Mystery?I've been doing it so long, I don't really know. When I first started there was no web. Much of the history was a bit of a mystery even to experts. The manuscripts one might have needed were difficult to access but with the help of many people and institutions like libraries, I managed the investigation I needed. I'm still researching - it never ends. One has to play detective oneself never mind write about secrets and intrigue.2) This is the fourteenth novel in your series. How do you keep the stories so fresh and exciting?Ah, this is just practice I think. Clues have to be eked out and red herrings buried deep in the mystery. Pacing is very important and the investigation has to go on at the right speed, with little moments of humour to lift the intrigue.3) Did you discover anything fascinating when researching this book?Yes. All about Mediaeval scaffolding! Who knew exactly how the builders put together a castle? And the fact that some of that Medieval work is sometimes still there! I've seen it with my own eyes.BOOK ORDERBelvoir's PromiseShe Moved Through the FairDown By the Salley GardensI Will Give My Love an AppleBlack is the Colour of My True Love's HairLong LankynOne Misty Moisty MorningThe Unquiet GraveThe Lark in the MorningA Parcel of RoguesBushes & BriarsThough I Live Not Where I LoveWynter WakenethWorldes BlisAlysoun
