"A collection of essays about the ways California's Native nations are resisting colonialism today, from education reform to protests against environmental injustice and beyond"--
From the New York Times-bestselling author of The 57 Bus comes Accountable, a propulsive and thought-provoking true story about the revelation of a racist social media account that changes everything for a group of high school students and begs the question: What does it mean to be held accountable for harm that takes place behind a screen? When a high school student started a private Instagram account that used racist and sexist memes to make his friends laugh, he thought of it as "edgy" humor. Over time, the edge got sharper. Then a few other kids found out about the account. Pretty soon, everyone knew.Ultimately no one in the small town of Albany, California, was safe from the repercussions of the account's discovery. Not the girls targeted by the posts. Not the boy who created the account. Not the group of kids who followed it. Not the adults-educators and parents-whose attempts to fix things too often made them worse. In the end, no one was laughing. And everyone was left asking: Where does accountability end for online speech that harms? And what does accountability even mean?Award-winning and New York Times-bestselling author Dashka Slater has written a must-read book for our era that explores the real-world consequences of online choices.

The Fire of Heaven presents the work of world-renowned artist Enrique Martínez Celaya in conversation with the life and work of the influential twentieth-century California poet Robinson Jeffers. Despite existing in different lifetimes, Jeffers's approach to life as art and his reverence for the natural beauty of the California coastline inextricably link the uncompromising poet to Martínez Celaya. The artist's multi-faceted practice explores the map of a territory shaped by self, memory, ideations of home, exile, myth, and identity. His practice presumes art should be an ethical effort that aims to understand better and engage with the world and ourselves. Beyond these threads of commonality, Martínez Celaya draws directly from Jeffers's writings, such as the 1928 poem The Summit Redwood, which serves as the exhibition's namesake and describes "the fire from heaven" as a force untamed and ignited at whim. Martínez Celaya's work created during his stay at the poet's landmark home in Carmel-by-the-Sea is complemented by Jeffers's handwritten poems, notes, and photographs.ENRIQUE MARTINEZ CELAYA (*1964) was born in Cuba and raised in Spain and Puerto Rico. He has realized exhibitions, interventions, and social and intellectual interactions worldwide with major museums, galleries, and institutions, including the Berliner Philharmonie, The State Hermitage Museum, and The Phillips Collection. A painter, sculptor, and writer, he lives in Los Angeles.

Hollywood Confidential is the first truly in-depth look at the sexy, humorous, violent, and tragic history of the mob in Hollywood from the 1920s, when Joe Kennedy decided to buy a motion picture company, to the 1980s when the last vestiges of mob influence were revealed through investigations of former Screen Actors Guild President Ronald Reagan and his union backers. The revelations continue into the 1980s when the major studios were no longer important, the independents were on the rise, and it was no longer possible to buy, bribe, or blackmail in a meaningful way. Tacit Knowledge provides an insight into the complex artistic and educational practices that characterized the first decade of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). There is a special focus on the conceptual and feminist strategies developed in and from John Baldessari's Post Studio class as well as Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro's Feminist Art Program, which was initiated in 1970 and brought to the newly founded art school in 1971. As Post Studio and feminist practices at CalArts are often characterized by the specific entanglement of cognitive and (habitual) bodily forms of knowledge, the idea of tacit knowledge, and thus learning through social and performative contexts of action, functions as an overarching principle linking all the contributions in the book. Combining short introductions with in-depth case studies and a broad range of documental and photographic material, the experimental publication takes the form of a magazine, allowing a diverse and lively approach to the ideas shaping the early years of CalArts.Annette Jael Lehmann (b. 1965) is professor of contemporary art, visual culture and theater at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
