I 1999 fandt man blot 700 meter fra toppen af Mount Everest det dybfrosne lig af den legendariske engelske bjergbestiger George Mallory, der forsvandt i 1924. Tre gange forsøgte han at bestige verdens højeste bjerg, tredje gang blev ulykkens gang. Både han og hans klatremakker Andrew Irvine omkom på bjerget.
