Based on ethnographic research conducted in a town on the Polish-Belarussian border, this book examines borders and the lingering echoes of conflict. Using hauntology as a guiding framework to understand how people live amidst the histories and reverberations of conflicts, the author investigates the role that landscape, with its material presences and absences, plays in evoking and maintaining the border. The ethnography probes themes of ethnicity, religious practice, memory and space, investigating the border as a dynamic social process.By immersing herself in the everyday lives of the borderland, Joyce unravels how traces - lingering imprints of the past - shape local relationships in the present, influencing shared understandings of history and the future. Introducing the concept of the spectral border as a lens to reveal the ambiguous presence of afterlives and memories tied to a historical boundary, the book unveils its present-day ghostly forms in the local ideas and practices of neighbourliness at the heart of borderland identity. Spectral Borders interrogates the use and limitations of these practices by exploring points of tension, where the meanings and uses of 'being a neighbour' and 'being from the borderland' are tested and challenged. In doing so, the book raises important questions about how conviviality is created and managed in a place with a long and unresolved history marked by ethnic and religious violence, war, and civil unrest.

The proclamation of Belarusian independence on March 25, 1918, and the rival establishment of the Soviet Belarusian state on January 1, 1919, created two distinct and mutually exclusive national myths, which continue to define contemporary Belarusian society. This book examines the processes that resulted in this dual resolution in the context of World War I and the subsequent Russian Revolutions.Based on original archival material, Lizaveta Kasmach scrutinizes the development of competing concepts of Belarusian nationhood in the context of rivaling national aspirations and imperial policies. The analysis convincingly demonstrates the divisions within the nationalist movement, both politically between the moderates and socialists, and geographically between German-occupied territory with Vilna as a center versus Russian-controlled territory around Minsk. Besides the case study of Belarusian nation-building efforts, the book is a contribution to the study of the First World War in East Central Europe, approaching the war and its aftermath as a mobilizational moment in the region.

A new study of tank warfare used in the Soviet offensive of Operation Bagration, which destroyed Army Group Center. Operation Bagration, the 1944 summer campaign on the Russian Front, has been called "Hitler's Greatest Defeat." The operation involved substantial tank and armored vehicles on both sides but the German forces were severely hampered by the transfer of dozens of Panzer divisions to France to repel an expected Allied invasion. Forced to make hard decisions, German tank forces in the central Belarus sector were weak compared to the heavy concentration of Panzers in northern Ukraine. The Red Army exploited this vulnerability, crushing Army Group Center, and pushing beyond the Soviet frontier into Poland and East Prussia. With this crucial victory secured, the Red Army conducted successive offensives beyond the Carpathian Mountains, arriving at the Vistula river in Poland, and forcing Romania to switch sides. The Red Army had embarked on a major tank modernization after the Kursk battles of 1943 and as a result, Operation Bagration saw the first widespread use of T-34-85 and IS-2 tanks as well as self-propelled guns. Germany's Panther tank finally reached technical maturity in the summer of 1944 but small numbers weakened its battlefield impact, while other innovations such as the Tiger II heavy tank failed to leave their mark. Using new photos and a fascinating selection of color illustrations explaining the camouflage and markings of these tanks, this book describes how the tanks and AFVs on both sides contributed to the eventual defeat of Army Group Center.

This special issue of the Journal "zeitgeschichte" presents the results of the doctoral theses written within the framework of the Doctoral College European Historical Dictatorship and Transformation Research (2009-2012) as selected scholarly essays. The contributions are devoted to authoritarian regimes of the 20th century in Austria, Belarus, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, and the Soviet Union. Using various methods from the humanities and social sciences, different aspects of mainly "small" dictatorships are examined: conditions of emergence, structures, continuities, as well as preceding and subsequent processes of political and social transformation.Das vorliegende Sonderheft der Zeitschrift »zeitgeschichte« stellt die Ergebnisse der im Rahmen des Initiativkollegs (IK) Europäische historische Diktatur- und Transformationsforschung (2009-2012) verfassten Promotionsarbeiten in Form ausgewählter wissenschaftlicher Essays vor. Die Beiträge widmen sich autoritären Regimes des 20. Jahrhunderts in Belarus, Griechenland, Italien, Lettland, Litauen, Österreich, Polen, Portugal, Rumänien, Spanien, Ungarn und der Sowjetunion. Mittels verschiedener geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlicher Methoden werden unterschiedliche Aspekte vor allem »kleiner« Diktaturen untersucht: Entstehungsbedingungen, Strukturen, Kontinuitäten sowie vor- und nachgelagerte Prozesse politischer und gesellschaftlicher Transformation.

Hvad er baggrunden for de folkelige protester i Belarus / Hviderusland i 2020? Hvem er deltagerne og hvilke forandringer stræber de efter? Denne bog handler om det moderne Hviderusland, dets styre og befolkning som et produkt af et kompliceret historisk forløb og dets plads i en aktuel storpolitisk kontekst. Fremstillingen gennemgår hele forløbet med folkelige protester siden valget 9. august 2020; præsenterer protesternes deltagere og deres aktionsformer. Den skildrer en broget opposition, der både består af kræfter på den politiske venstre- og højrefløj og sætter lys på arbejdspladsernes rolle. Der sættes spørgsmål ved vestlige mediers fremhævelse af den hviderussiske husmor Svjatlana Tsikhanovskaja som “oppositionsleder”, og deres overfladiske brug af begrebet “revolution”. Forfatteren tager afstand fra vores opinionsdanneres trang til simple forklaringer, især når det drejer sig om gådefulde lande som eksempelvis Hviderusland, hvor flere millioner mennesker ser sig som en del af den russisk-talende verden. Baggrundsviden er dog en forudsætning for at forstå, både hvorfor der protesteres, men også hvorfor mange andre undlader at protestere. Bogen er et forsøg på at præsentere et forholdsvis ukendt land for læseren og bygger især på lokale kilder og på forfatterens egne indtryk fra besøg i dette land.
