To know oneself is the central purpose of life. Being a method of perception, the state of mind resulting from the meditative act is a means of knowing oneself. It is not the only one. There are four main states of consciousness: ordinary waking consciousness, dreaming sleep, deep sleep and the meditative state. The first is characterised by the self focused outward, the second by the self focused on inner thoughts, the third by the self free of all perception and the last by the self focused on the self. Only in this fourth state is direct knowledge of the self possible, and the cessation of the division between subject and object seen. Only meditation, or the fourth state of Consciousness, permits perception and direct knowledge of the Self. The Subject observes the Subject. In the other three states, the Subject can only observe objects. The fourth state of consciousness, which occurs during meditation, is scientifically confirmed, since it has its own particular physiology, which differentiates it from the other three states.

This book explores how two early modern and two modern Japanese writers - Yosa Buson (1716-83), Ema Saiko (1787-1861), Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902), and Natsume Soseki (1867-1916) - experimented with the poetic artifice afforded by the East Asian literati (bunjin) tradition, a repertoire of Chinese and Japanese poetry and painting. Their experiments generated a poetics of irony that transformed the lineaments of lyric expression in literati culture and advanced the emergence of modern prose poetry in Japanese literature. Through rigorous close readings, this study changes our understanding of the relationship between lyric form and the representation of self, sense, and feeling in Japanese poetic writing from the late eighteenth through the early twentieth century. The book aims to reach a broad audience, including specialists in East Asian Studies, Anglophone literary studies, and Comparative Literature.

Nisshin was from the generation of Nichiren disciples that had no direct connection with the founder or those who did. Only his teacher Nichiei was a disciple of someone who knew a person who actually met Nichiren. He was thus detached from any sort of direct relationship, yet in the XV century the presence of Nichiren was still very tangible. As other charismatic leaders in the Muromachi period, such as Sh¿jin'in Nichiry¿ and Genmy¿'in Nichij¿, Nisshin was greatly inspired by Nichiren's endeavors and those of other disciples who did not spare their efforts to emulate him. Nisshin tonsured within the Nakayama lineage and his formative years were indeed under the aegis of this tradition, where he became very inspired by the actions of J¿gy¿'in Nichiy¿, the third abbot of Hokeky¿-ji. Nichiei as well as the fourth and fifth abbots at Hokeky¿-ji have been very important for his upbringing as their own relationship to Nichiren was still concrete, albeit not direct. They had met a disciple of someone who actually knew Nichiren as it was the case of Nichiy¿, a disciple of Nichik¿ who trained at Minobu directly under Nichiren. The level of inspiration was still huge and even if the legends about Nisshin's ordeals were probably produced post-facto by his successors, he was definitively an iconic and charismatic preacher.

This book tackles the question of border control in and around imperial Japan in the first half of the twentieth century, with a specific focus on its documentation regime. It explores the institutional development, media and literary discourses, and on[1]the-ground practices of documentary identification in the Japanese empire and the places visited by its subjects. The contributing authors, covering such regions as Korea, Manchuria, Taiwan, Siberia, Australia, and the United States, place the question of individual identity in the eyes of the respective governments in dialogue with the global developments of the identification and mobility control practices. The chapters suggest the importance of focusing more than previously on the narrative of individual identification, not as a tool for creating nation states but as a tool for generating, strengthening, and maintaining asymmetrical relationships between people of different socioeconomic backgrounds who moved in and out of empires. This book joins the effort in the recent scholarship in migration history to highlight experiences of migrants beyond the transatlantic world, and that in East Asian history to investigate the space and connections beyond the boundaries of the nation states. By bringing together the analyses on the trans-Pacific mobility and Japan¿s imperial expansion and its aftermath in East Asia, it shows a complex interplay between state power and moving individuals, two forces whose relationships went far beyond simple competition.Takahiro Yamamoto is Assistant Professor of Cultural Economic History at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany. His focus is on the history of modern Japan, especially with regard to its borders, cross-border connections, and human mobility. Prior to coming to Heidelberg, Germany, he was a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Research Fellow (2016-2017), affiliated with the Graduate Schools of Law and Politics at the University of Tokyo. He has also served as a Global Perspectives on Society Teaching Fellow at New York University Shanghai.

This book charts the process of civilisation in Japan. Using the theory of civilising processes developed by Norbert Elias, the author examines the complex underlying structural and psychological processes from the seventh century to the twentieth century. Furthermore, by drawing on rich historical data, the author illustrates how these complex processes led the Japanese to see themselves as 'more civilised' than their forebears and neighbouring countries. Although the theory serves as an important reference point, the author draws on other works to address different complex questions surrounding Japanese development. Therefore, this book presents three key themes: first, it gives an alternative understanding of the complex developments of Japanese society; second, it intercedes into an ongoing debate about the applicability of Elias's theory in a non-Western context; and third, it expands Elias's theory.
