  • - en biografi om Jørgen Ryg
af Peter Borberg & Henrik Busborg
    247,95 kr.

Midt i idyllen bliver Chloé pludselig syg.

If you want a closer look into what happened with Miles Davis' music in the 1980's, this is the book for you. 10 years ago I planned an updated Danish version of my dissertation "That's Right" from 1991. The project stranded because of financial shortcomings. Things have changed, and this book is a result of that. The dissertation looks at the music Miles Davis recorded in the 1980's. The historic context is described. Miles Davis as an improviser is described and analysed. Focus is on "Blues", "Spanish modes", "Pop" and "Modern composition". The esthetic guidelines he used are stated. When you go to page one you are back in time in the year of 1991. A few more recent comments and explanations have been included.

    69,95 - 122,95 kr.

    207,95 kr.

Born with a beat in his soul and a drumstick in hand, Warren I. Smith's destiny with music was inevitable. His musical chops took him from the smoky jazz clubs of Chicago, through the intoxicating energy of New York's music scene, to global tours, sharing the spotlight with some of the most iconic musical acts of the past six decades. An exceptional blend of a classically trained musician and a relentless riff master, Warren shattered barriers with his thirst for innovation alongside his indomitable spirit. But his journey was far from a solo act; it unfolded against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Era, where the rhythm of societal change harmonized with his personal revolution. In a time when Black musicians battled for recognition, he carved a path that would become a bridge between cultures and a beacon of resilience. His contributions to jazz, R&B, funk, pop, and rock and roll became a universal language, uniting hearts and transcending boundaries.Beyond the melodies and the applause lies a story of unwavering passion, unyielding determination, and unbreakable friendships. Crossing Borders and Playing With Pioneers invites you to step into the electrifying journey of a jazz legend, a trailblazing percussionist, drummer, arranger, and composer who didn't just play the music-he became its heartbeat.

"Music is your own experience, your thoughts, your wisdom. If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn."--Charlie Parker"What is jazz? The rhythm--the feeling."--Coleman Hawkins"The best sound usually comes the first time you do something. If it's spontaneous, it's going to be rough, not clean, but it's going to have the spirit which is the essence of jazz."--Dave BrubeckHere, in their own words, such famous jazz musicians as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Fletcher Henderson, Bunk Johnson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Clarence Williams, Jo Jones, Jelly Roll Morton, Mezz Mezzrow, Billie Holiday, and many others recall the birth, growth, and changes in jazz over the years. From its beginnings at the turn of the twentieth century in the red-light district in New Orleans (or Storyville, as it came to be known), to Chicago's Downtown section and the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and Chicago's South Side to jam sessions in Kansas City to Harlem during the Depression years, the West Coast and modern developments, the story of jazz is vividly and colorfully documented in hundreds of personal interviews, letters, tape recorded and telephone conversations, and excerpts from previously printed articles that appeared in books and magazines. There is no more fascinating and lively history of jazz than this firsthand telling by the men who made it. It should be read and re-read by all jazz enthusiasts, musicians, students of music and culture, students of American history, and other readers. "A lively book bearing the stamp of honesty and naturalness."--Library Journal. "A work of considerable substance."--The New Yorker. "Some of the quotations are a bit racy but they give the book a wonderful flavor."--San Francisco Chronicle.

How can classic rock live on when its idols are dying all around us?Twilight of the Gods is a bold, often humorous, and provocative book about our rock gods and the undeniable messages they leave behind. Since the 1960s, artists like the Rolling Stones, the Who, Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Black Sabbath, and Bruce Springsteen have ushered the classic rock canon forward. Even groups that are no longer active?the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin?continue to wield an outsized amount of cultural capital. But no matter how entrenched these classic rockers have been, you can already see signs of their decline.Mixing personal memoir, criticism, and journalism, Steven Hyden, author of the critically acclaimed Your Favorite Band Is Killing Me, explores the ways that classic rock changed the culture?how it established the album as music's answer to the novel and rock concerts as the secular equivalent to church?and asks whether any of these signposts can endure. He investigates the rise and fall of classic rock radio and asks whether the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is telling the right version of rock history. Twilight of the Gods explains what we can learn from rock gods and their music, and tries to answer the most important question: Is classic rock ephemeral or forever?

Emerging from the not-so-mean streets of suburban New England at the tail end of the 1980s, The Unband embraced everything reckless, unhealthy, and downright harebrained about rock and roll. After a decade on the booze-and-gas-soaked road to success, with the help of their dominatrix manager, a willful record executive or two, and dumb luck in spades, the hard-rocking, gleefully out-of-control Unband arrived at the threshold of the new century and got their shot at the big time?in a chaotic music industry where boy-band pop ruled supreme and rock music had been declared dead. In this epic, intoxicated un-memoir, Unband bassist Michael Ruffino delves deeper into the story he originally told in 2004's Gentlemanly Repose, taking readers along on a raucous tear through the netherworld of heavy rock, populated with crack-smoking Girl Scouts, collegiate bedlamites, shotgun-toting barmaids, a rodent-chomping music CEO, a beer-drinking chimp, and headbangers by the horde, while on tour with giants of heavy metal including Dio, Motörhead, Anthrax, Def Leppard, and a Who Was Who of reunited '80s hair bands. Into that volatile mix, The Unband brought do-it-yourself pyrotechnics, a giant inflatable hand (for making giant inflatable gestures), a high tolerance for substance abuse of all kinds, and an infectious love of rock and roll and everything it stands for.Equal parts This Is Spinal Tap and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Adios, Motherfucker is a riotous and unbridled testament to rock and roll being at its best on the brink of disaster.

Jews have been a major presence in America's jazz, as musicians and as jazz facilitators, and in Kosher Jammers: Jewish Connections in Jazz - The USA, Gerber tells that story with a rigour worthy of academia but with a feature writer's creative flair. Besides drawing on a plethora of second-hand sources, Kosher Jammers is absolutely packed with first-hand material, from interviews, phone calls and emails with jazz figures, Jewish and otherwise - including possibly the last ever interview with swing era icon Artie Shaw. Among the many other interviewees are black jazz figures such as saxophonist Buddy Collette and the critic Stanley Crouch, as a key theme running through the book is the relationship between Jews and African Americans in jazz. The impact on jazz of tunes written by Jewish "Great American Songbook" composers such as George Gershwin, Harold Arlen and Johnny Green is also covered, And the book features an extensive study of the Jewish-jazz phenomenon, whereby musicians from Ziggy Ellman in the 1930s to contemporary artists, notably John Zorn, have sought to create jazz that draws on Jewish music influences and themes. Gerber drives home the point that, even had there never been a single Jewish jazz musician, Jews will still have contributed massively to the development of jazz in the United States, as managers, impresarios, venue owners, label founders, writers and such. 382 pages
