Kontrabassist Tobias Glöckler stellt seine Urtextausgabe daher auf eine breite Basis: Neben dem handschriftlichen Aufführungsmaterial und den zu Lebzeiten des Komponisten erschienenen Klavierauszügen zieht er auch Tonaufnahmen mit Koussevitzky als Solisten heran - und liefert damit endlich eine fundierte Urtextausgabe von Orchesterpartitur und Klavierauszug dieses Klassikers der Kontrabass-Literatur. Wie bei allen Kontrabasskonzerten im Henle-Verlag bietet auch diese Ausgabe den Klavierauszug von Christoph Sobanski in zwei Tonarten (e-moll und fis-moll), für die Ausführung in Solo- oder Orchesterstimmung.

Im Februar 1854, wenige Wochen vor Robert Schumanns Einweisung in die Nervenheilanstalt in Endenich, entstanden seine Variationen über ein Thema in Es-dur. Aufgrund der menschlich ungemein bewegenden Ereignisse dieser Tage hütete Clara Schumann die Manuskripte dieser ihr gewidmeten, später "Geistervariationen" genannten, letzten Klavierkomposition ihres Mannes gewissermaßen wie Reliquien und untersagte auch jede Veröffentlichung. Erst 1939 erschien die Erstausgabe, die in vielen Belangen nicht dem von Schumann Aufgezeichneten entspricht. Die Henle Urtextausgabe stützt sich erstmals auf alle erreichbaren Primärquellen; sie stellt de facto die einzige verlässliche Urtextausgabe dieses in den letzten Jahren immer häufiger zu hörenden Werks dar.

Mit den drei Sätzen Pagodes, La soirée dans Grenade (Ein Abend in Granada) und Jardins sous la pluie (Gärten im Regen) lässt Debussy im Zyklus Estampes in Bildern eine poetische Welt aus Landschaften und fernen Ländern entstehen. Er komponierte die Stücke im Sommer 1903 während eines Aufenthalts in Bichain im nördlichen Burgund. Von dort bekräftigt er in einem Brief: "Wenn man sich Reisen nicht leisten kann, muss man sie durch Fantasie ersetzen." Im virtuosen Schlusssatz knüpft er an seine zukunftsweisenden Images aus dem Jahr 1894 (HN 846) an.

Wie viele Klaviervirtuosen seiner Zeit träumte auch Robert Schumann davon, sich dem Publikum als Pianist und Komponist zugleich in einem eigenen Klavierkonzert zu präsentieren. Aus dem Entwurf einer einsätzigen "Phantasie" entstand schließlich der Kopfsatz des berühmten Werkes, das hiermit erstmals in einer praktischen Urtextausgabe vorgelegt wird.
