Internationally renowned artist Heiner Meyer (b.1953) utilizes Pop Art strategies, combining visual material from a vast variety of contexts. His paintings combine comic figures, compositions by Picasso or Hockney, and advertising for modern luxury brands, condensing them into a new pictorial creation that allows for a diverse range of reflections that update the critical potential of Pop Art in the face of contemporary consumerism. The publication Pop Art Now shows various views of the installation and paintings from the exhibition at the Kunstforum Wien, as well as recent works from the last two years. In her text, art historian Dr Renée Gadsden provides insights into the exhibition and Heiner Meyer's oeuvre since the beginning of his artistic career.

Matthias Mansen (b. 1958) is one of contemporary art's most influential woodcut artists. With his monumental color woodcuts, which consist of several printing blocks and are often printed in overlays and ever-new states, Mansen has significantly advanced the art of woodcutting and brought new opportunities for expression to the technique. The major retrospective at the Gottorf Castle Museum of Art and Cultural History and the Kunstmuseum Singen shows works spanning four decades. The centerpiece is Mansen's most recent series Triest oder die Götter (Trieste or The Gods), in which Mansen focuses on the motif of bathers, a subject matter that has recurred throughout art history. For him, their poses and gestures open up a world of associations with ancient Greek and Roman sculptures, which he explores in his works.

We were taken to the services in Doncaster old church, which was destroyed by fire many years afterwards. Though not yet in my teens, I had an intense delight in architecture, and deeply enjoyed the noble old building, one of the finest of its class in England. Our pew was in the west gallery, not far from the organ, and from it we had a good view of the interior. The effect of the music was very strong upon me, as the instrument was a fine one, and I was fully alive to the influence of music and architecture in combination. The two arts go together far better than architecture and painting; for music seems to make architecture alive, as it rolls along the aisles and under the lofty vaults.

The first comprehensive monograph on this leading American contemporary figurative painterSpinneret draws inspiration from the eponymous silk-producing organ that spiders use to weave their webs. Anthony Cudahy's figurative paintings tenderly piece together enigmatic scenes of specific objects and equivocal environments from interwoven references drawn from queer archives, art history, film, poetry, friends, and autobiography. Plate sections feature brief written reflections on Cudahy's themes, style, and motifs from fellow artists and writers Ian Lewandowski, Paul Legault, Anna Glantz, Philemona Williamson, Lily Wong, Justin Liam O'Brien, Billy Sullivan, John Belknap, and Elizabeth Glaessner. Spinneret spans the last half-decade of Cudahy's career to date, including brand new work, and unpacks his richly layered artistic practice. Organized by five artistic themes - slippages, allegories, fragments, figures, spaces - it captures the ongoing push and pull, conceptually and materially, across the artist's practice.

In her installations made of steel and glazed ceramics, the sculptor Lisa Seebach draws delicate spatial structures.Situational spaces open up to the viewer, evoking memories of things that are inextricably linked to people's everyday world:"Across the silence, it whispers befogged words that dance around my body and usher me into the next room. The floor seems soft, or absent, but I manage to proceed. It feels almost as if I was floating among the figures that appear before and beside me. They refuse to inform me about their roles in the game: This make-believe dream plays me like a puppet on a string, nudges me around, and finds pleasure in watching me tumble in wonder, and wonder why nothing has happened to me yet in this uneasy situation. I feel certain that this house is a body, and that my surroundings allow it to breathe.Breathe in, breathe out, faster at times, then again slowly. It is the rhythm of this breath that rocks me back and forth, leaves me adrift, causes ever-changing encounters with racks, fixtures, and all the objects that catch, hold, and return my gaze. Even though these configurations seem strange to me, I am certain that we are no strangers. They have always been with me."

National Bestseller"A landmark and long-overdue cultural history." ?VogueThe stylish, wild story of the marriage of Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward?a tale of love, art, Hollywood, and heartbreak ?Those years in the sixties when I was married to Dennis were the most wonderful and awful of my life.? ?Brooke HaywardLos Angeles in the 1960s: riots in Watts and on the Sunset Strip, wild weekends in Malibu, late nights at The Daisy discotheque, openings at the Ferus Gallery, and the convergence of pop art, rock and roll, and the New Hollywood. At the center of it all, one inspired, improbable, and highly combustible couple?Dennis Hopper and Brooke Hayward?lived out the emblematic love story of '60s L.A.The home these two glamorous young actors created for themselves and their family at 1712 North Crescent Heights Boulevard in the Hollywood Hills became the era's unofficial living room, a kaleidoscopic realm??furnished like an amusement park,? Andy Warhol said?that made an impact on anyone who ever stepped into it. Hopper and Hayward, vanguard collectors of contemporary art, packed the place with pop masterpieces by the likes of Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and Warhol, and welcomed a who's who of visitors, from Jane Fonda to Jasper Johns, Joan Didion to Tina Turner, Hells Angels to Black Panthers. In this house, everything that defined the 1960s went down: the fun, the decadence, the radical politics, and, ultimately, the danger and instability that Hopper explored in the project that made his career, became the cinematic symbol of the period, and blew their union apart?Easy Rider.Everybody Thought We Were Crazy is at once a fascinating account of the Hopper and Hayward union and a deeply researched, panoramic cultural history. It's the intimate saga of one couple whose own rise and fall?from youthful creative flowering to disorder and chaos?mirrors the very shape of the decade.

  • af iO Tillett Wright
    177,95 kr.

Born into the beautiful bedlam of downtown New York in the eighties, iO Tillett Wright came of age at the intersection of punk, poverty, heroin, and art. Still, no personality was more vibrant and formidable than iO's mother's. Rhonna, a showgirl and young widow, was a mercurial, erratic glamazon. She was iO's fiercest defender and only authority in a world with few boundaries and even fewer indicators of normal life. At the center of Darling Days is the remarkable relationship between a fiery kid and a domineering ma?a bond defined by freedom and control, excess and sacrifice; by heartbreaking deprivation, agonizing rupture, and, ultimately, forgiveness. Darling Days is also a provocative examination of culture and identity, of the instincts that shape us and the norms that deform us, and of the courage and resilience it takes to listen closely to your deepest self. Alternating between the harrowing and the hilarious, Darling Days is the candid, tough, and stirring memoir of a young person in search of an authentic self as family and home life devolve into chaos.

  • af Francine Prose
    227,95 kr.

Francine Prose's life of Caravaggio evokes the genius of this great artist through a brilliant reading of his paintings. Caravaggio defied the aesthetic conventions of his time; his use of ordinary people, realistically portrayed?street boys, prostitutes, the poor, the aged?was a profound and revolutionary innovation that left its mark on generations of artists. His insistence on painting from nature, on rendering the emotional truth of experience, whether religious or secular, makes him an artist who speaks across the centuries to our own time.Born in 1571 near Milan, Michelangelo Merisi (da Caravaggio) moved to Rome when he was twenty-one years old. He became a brilliant and successful artist, protected by the influential Cardinal del Monte and other patrons. But he was also a man of the streets who couldn't seem to free himself from its brawls and vendettas. In 1606 he fled Rome, apparently after killing another man in a dispute. He spent his last years in exile, in Naples, Malta, and Sicily, at once celebrated for his art and tormented by his enemies. Through it all, he produced masterpieces of astonishing complexity and power. Eventually he received a pardon from the Pope, only to die, in mysterious circumstances, on the way back to Rome in 1610.Francine Prose presents the brief but tumultuous life of one of the greatest of all painters with passion and acute sensitivity.
