Many African countries are home to extraordinary architecture that is virtually unknown. There are interpretations of Art Deco, International Style, Brutalism as well as of African vernacular architecture. Climate-responsive buildings with a fluidity of interior and exterior spaces play a large role. While many of these 20th century architects were of European origin, they were deeply influenced by their surroundings and found original, site-specific expressions, often in collaboration with African architects. A focus of the construction activities were educational buildings which played an important role for these young nations that mostly gained their independence in the 1960s. While some of the documented buildings have been restored, others are still awaiting reconstruction. Well-known contributors include Uta Pottgiesser (TU Delft), Ana Tostões (Lisbon University), Ola Uduku (University of Liverpool) et al. The stunning photography by Jean Molitor takes the reader on a journey across the continent Documentation of over 60 buildings from eight countries with new drawings and photographs
"In a time of climate crisis and housing shortages, a bold, visionary call to replace current wasteful construction practices with an architecture of reuse"--
Structural control systems are used in civil engineering to minimize damage and dissipate energy caused by dynamic environmental loads in structures. These control methods can be classified into four groups: passive control, active control, semi-active control, and hybrid control. Structural control systems can be classified into two main categories: passive and active. Passive systems do not require external power or feedback to operate, and rely on the inherent properties of the structure or additional devices to dissipate or reduce vibrations.

«Through marvelously attentive case studies of a handful of works, some canonical, others obscure, Mark Stuart-Smith provides the most thorough exploration so far of Juan Muñoz¿s mesmerizing and haunted world. He inhabits the works, analyzing their mechanisms, materialities and drama, while at the same time connecting them to histories of politics, art and thought of great urgency to Muñoz and no less urgency now. This book has much to say not only about the forces and voices of silence but also about Muñoz¿s extraordinary struggle to make art that could hold its own against the fascinations of image and spectacle.»(Michael Brenson, author of David Smith: The Art and Life of a Transformational Sculptor (2022))The spectacular international success of the Spanish sculptor Juan Muñoz has tended to encourage a critical framing of the artist¿s work within narratives of global postmodernist innovation. This book, the first in-depth study of the central idea of silence in Muñoz¿s work, aims to position him more clearly within his historical moment, by reading his work against the silences of Spanish politics and culture in post-Civil War Spain.Drawing on a wealth of documents, beginning with Muñoz¿s student notebooks, the book shows how silence and memory defined and shaped his art. A range of methodologies from within Muñoz¿s own intellectual horizon is applied to explore a progression from the implied silences of his sculptural installations to the literal sounds and silences of his first radio piece. Muñoz¿s silencing strategies are analysed across different mediums, both visual and verbal, to show how his art probes and reanimates the uncanny memory of Spain¿s traumatic past.

'Macro-generation' refers to the generation or cohort of a broad area on the scale of tens of hundreds or thousands of kilometers, perhaps a study at the global scale; while 'macro-architecture' refers to the architecture of a broad area, and again, on the scale of tens of hundreds of kilometers, perhaps a study at the global scale and is said to have matured for that generation on being observed to have addressed adequately the changing factors of environment, society and technology. Players, events and the setting may vary based on the context and application, however, the profession and practice in the light of the written thoughts, language and work of institutions and personalities of architects and thinkers of that generation over time, space, space-time, place and presence remain as constants; captured and undertaken in God willing, several volumes; Volume 2.0 - GZ Alpha Beta Architecture: Natural environment (theory) to Pier Luigi Nervi (method).

The Overworld is in trouble. On the ground, a rampaging army of armor-clad zombies is roving across the biomes. The same Logan who set zombies on Bobbie’s village and turned her little brother, Johnny, into one of the walking dead. Who bullied her friend Ben and wrecked his adventuring career. Who was mean to his minion, Other Ben (who prefers Benjamin, actually). But as the Wither skulls start flying, this not-so-merry band needs all the help it can get. Bobbie hasn’t forgotten her main mission: Find the zombified villagers who were once her friends and family and feed them the enchanted golden apples that will turn them back. But as long as the Wither exists, there’s danger. And if there’s danger, it’s a hero’s job to fix it.
