This volume studies concrete examples of how female monastic spirituality acquires allegorical-symbolic connotations when representing itself, the world or life in the monasteries of the Hispanic area. Biographies, autobiographies, poems, iconographic and theatrical representations paint a symbolic picture of virtues and sins, of exemplary conduct and expiatory experiences.
This work is the result of studies for TDAUP - Diploma Work in Architecture, Urbanism and Landscaping from the Architecture and Urbanism course at UNIVAG in 2017. Its aim is to create a proposal for an architectural project aimed at the elderly in the city centre of Cuiabá. Through research that explores the growth rates of this population and, above all, exposes the city's lack of spaces that solve and contribute to improving the quality of life of the elderly community, in various dimensions of life, including: environmental, social interaction and accessibility. The study analyses existing models of long-term housing in the city, looking at the treatment methods implemented, taking into account the positive aspects on which the project was based, as well as the negative aspects refuted in the proposal. The methodology used to design the project sought to integrate the elderly into society by including spaces that were attractive to the public. To this end, the blocks were modelled in the vernacular style of Cuiabá, recreating the environments in which the elderly spent a large part of their lives.

Inspired by the great English landscape architects, his repertoire ranges from the walled gardens of his hometown of Bruges to magically structured landscape ensembles. With an introductory essay on his working methods, this book presents Blanckaert's gardens from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, from the earliest to the most recent, captured in fantastic photographs by Jean-Pierre Gabriel in every season. PIET BLANCKAERT (*1955) is a landscape architect and has run his own independent studio, Piet Blanckaert Landscape Design, in Bruges since 1979. His commissions include private gardens, the design of open spaces around hotels and industrial facilities, as well as sculpture gardens in Belgium, France, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Greece.

In 1931, the English designer Gerald Summers and his partner Marjorie Butcher opened their business, Makers of Simple Furniture, in London. Until 1940, the company produced hundreds of ingenious plywood designs that helped define the idea of the modern interior in Great Britain. Based on Marjorie Butcher's vivid recollections and a wealth of unpublished material-including photographs, personal correspondence, designs and workshop documents-the book traces the groundbreaking achievements of the furniture company best known for the iconic Bent Plywood Armchair . The publication was supported in part by the Graham Foundationfor Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. GERALD SUMMERS (1899-1967) is one of the foremost furniture designers of the twentieth century. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, he worked as an engineer before starting his design career. In 1931, he and his partner, MARJORIE BUTCHER (1909-1996), opened Makers of Simple Furniture in London. They managed the firm for almost ten years, producing hundreds of pieces for the modern home. In 1940, wartime exigencies brought an end to the enterprise. They redirected their energy to Gerald Summers Ltd., a supplier of engineering parts. MARTHA DEESE is an authority on Gerald Summers. She earned a master's degree in decorative art history from Cooper-Hewitt Museum/Parsons School of Design, New York, and worked for three decades as an administrator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Her groundbreaking article on Summers and his firm, Makers of Simple Furniture, published in the Journal of Design History in 1992, remains the principal source on the designer.

The architectural work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt (1890-1954/1889-1972) is not yet adequately appreciated. As members of the Glass Chain initiative and the Ring collective, they shaped, especially through their work with Alfons Anker, the development of Modernist architecture in the 1920s, as evidenced by their winning design for the layout of Berlin's Alexanderplatz. While their early work was anchored in utopian expressionism, a more objective attitude emerged later, based on the application of new architectural constructs. The book documents all 40 of Hans und Wassili Luckhardt's realized buildings. Two essays deal with the unbuilt and utopian projects. Newly taken photographs and newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn complement the historical illustrations. Comprehensive documentation of the work of Hans and Wassili Luckhardt. With approx. 80 new photographs and 80 newly drawn plans by Carsten Krohn

The purpose of the book is to assess the process of urban verticalization in different contexts through time, to provide insight into the relationships between highrise design and the way inhabitants negotiate them in their everyday lives, to assess how planners, politicians, and designers negotiate residential highrises in the strategies they develop for building the city and to introduce urban narratives and cartographies. Verticalization, although not new, currently takes place in a very different context than post-1945. Today, highrise residential buildings are more than architectural solutions: they are commodities in a global market where capital flows are fixed by developers and municipalities. Our exploration of residential verticalization is anchored in case studies, revealing different types of local-global negotiations in the design of the city, and has been framed by three interrelated dynamics: first, the complex relationships within the financialization of real estate markets, revealing differences in the types of local-global negotiations in the construction of the neo-liberal city; secondly, the most developed, anchors residential verticalization in the processes of socio-spatial differentiation within cities (mostly identified as gentrification associated to processes of urban renewal and densification; the third, related to readings and interpretations of the urban landscape and social, spatial practices and its iconographic and cartographic representations. This book is of interest to academics, students, planners, architects, and urban studies professionals. It shows that the chosen research object is an increasingly relevant angle of analysis of the contemporary city. It also provides a better knowledge of the processes of residential verticalization, their impact on the privatization of the urban space, and on urban segregation or fragmentation.
