For more than fifty years, Bette Midler has been at the center of the entertainment world as a uniquely talented singer, actress, and comedienne. Starting in the unlikely venue of a gay bathhouse in New York City--where she developed her Divine Miss M persona--this book takes a deep dive into her successes, from movies to million-selling records, from sell-out concert tours to her memorable farewell to Johnny Carson as his last guest on The Tonight Show.
WHAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT "NOTHING" In the summer of 1989, aspiring 20 year old filmmaker, Rolfe Kanefsky began production on his first independent film, a horror/comedy entitled, "There's Nothing Out There". Despite the fact he was majoring in film at Hampshire College at the time, his college advisers did not want to give Rolfe any credit for making a "horror" movie because they had no respect for the genre and point-blank told him upon reading his original screenplay, "You're not going to learn anything from making this film." Rolfe was annoyed to say the least and after shooting, he wanted to prove to his college that he had learned quite a lot and thus began the writing of this book. Although it started as an assignment to get college credit, Rolfe decided to write his (mis)adventures aimed at other aspiring young filmmakers to show how he pulled it off at such a young age. Starting by giving a bit of perspective of what got him interested in making movies, Rolfe devoted much of the book to explaining the whole process of writing the script, find the money, pre-production, production stories, and all the post-production work it takes to completing a feature length film shot on Super 16mm in the late 1980s. The first pass at this book ended with the completion of the film and the hope to find a distribution deal. Rolfe did get some credit for all of his work from his college but never officially graduated. Anyway, ten years later, Rolfe and some of his friends decided to put the book on-line for a while so at the age of 30, Rolfe, now a working independent filmmaker in Hollywood, California, updated the book to continue the story of what happened to "There's Nothing Out There" from 1990-2000. Upon finally making a deal with Bear Manor Publishing in 2023, Rolfe once more updated the book to conclude (as of now) the last 23 years of "Nothing" from the perspective of a now "seasoned" filmmaker of 54 years of age with over 80 produced movies. Adding hundreds of photos, this tale now tells the story of a little film that became a "cult classic" and a footnote in the horror genre which may have inspired the Meta-universe six years before "Scream" and later "Cabin In The Woods". But that is something you can judge for yourself upon reading this book and hopefully watching the film as well. As a bonus, this book also includes Rolfe's unproduced sequel called, "There's STILL Nothing Out There". Since the passage of 35 years has made it impossible to produce this script in his opinion, Rolfe thought it might be fun for those interested to be able to see how the story might have continued. Now, this doesn't rule out that he may make another sequel one of these days and in fact, he does have a new script but that's another story for another time in another publication.
As an artist with two feet in the theatrical world while peeking over the fence at the poetic side, reading these poem-plays (or play-poems) is an intersection of traffic I love playing in. An insane blend of commedia d'ellarte and Sarah Kane, this small collection will sit with anyone who remembers 1990's In-Yer-Face movement and has been contemplating its revival, or those who want to experience the chaotic depths of self-identification and history as performed by clowns. Satyrs and Pulcinellas is a surrealist take on modern plays with erratic imagery formed by the playwright's words. Welcome to the performance.
Media industry is a vibrant element of East Asian popular culture that has become increasingly important on a global level in the last decades. Japanese, and recently South Korean and Chinese films or TV series have a growing and worldwide audience not least because of easier access through streaming services. The many film productions provide a multifaceted arena of highly diverse content that spans nearly all aspects of the cultural developments in the countries. Religion has always played a major role in these contexts in various ways and in accordance with the highly diversified religious landscape of East Asia. Consequently, this issue brings together contributions on Japanese, Chinese and Korean films, including one additional glimpse to South Asia, thereby presenting portrayals of independent filmmakers, highly renowned classics, but also specimina of manga and anime, the cyberpunk genre, or on most recent highly successful streaming series. The admittedly tiny sample we can provide is intended to pique curiosity and encourage readers to delve deeper into the multifaceted and intriguing relationship between religion and media in Asia. If the presented contributions, which have been carefully selected, lead to academic discourse and inspire further research, then this issue will have served its purpose.
The 1930s, 40s and 50s were the heyday of the boxing film, attracting some of the biggest stars of the time - including Errol Flynn, James Cagney, Kirk Douglas and Paul Newman - and some of the best directors. Yet it is a genre that has received little critical attention apart from a few films singled out because they can be categorised as 'film noir'. It would be easy to assume, therefore, that the typical boxing film of this period was a dark melodrama with the tragic and doomed figure of the boxer at its centre, but that gives a false picture of a genre that included comedies and costume dramas among its 130-plus films. Sucker Punch invites the reader to take a wider look at the scope and breadth of the genre by providing a detailed discussion of 20 boxing films - a selection from each decade - from Hollywood and British studios. Some, such as Body and Soul, have become part of the established 'canon' of Film Studies, while lighter fare, such as Ringside Maisie or Gentleman Jim, have been overlooked by the critics but are worthy of re-examination - not simply because they are enjoyable films in their own right, but also because they offer insights into social attitudes of the times. The book draws on contemporary sources, such as trade-paper film reviews, as well as modern academic criticism, to build a highly readable account of the development of the boxing genre and its narrative conventions.
Squatters and fare dodgers, super jams and Chinese in Bavaria, crime thrillers without dead bodies and, time and again, whimsical comedies: the film oeuvre of Manfred Stelzer (1944-2020) is as extensive as it is varied and shows how a politically committed documentary filmmaker of the turbulent seventies managed to remain true to himself and his aspirations even as a busy feature film director in television - whether »Balko«, »Tatort« from Münster or »Polizeiruf 110« from Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This first comprehensive book about the director and screenwriter and his one hundred films from more than four decades brings together images and texts from his large film family as well as from a film studies perspective. All texts are included in German and English. With contributions by: Susanne Beyeler, Kurt Böwe, Jennifer Borrmann, Gerd Conradt, Matthias Dell, Andreas Döhler, Doris Dörrie, Harun Farocki, Robert Fischer, Jan Gympel, Doja Hacker, Gabriele Heberling, Irm Hermann, Lutz Kerschowski, Horst Königstein, Gert C. Möbius, Jakobine Motz, Ludger Pistor, Axel Prahl, Hans Helmut Prinzler, Monika Schmid, Elke Sommer, Beatrice E. Stammer, Gesine Strempel, Sigi Zimmerschied and many others. With greetings from Claudia Roth and Dr. Klaus Lederer.
'The City on Screen: Modern Strangers of Cinematic Istanbul' attempts to analyze how Istanbul is captured through the projector; in other words, the ontological relationship between city and film and how it is elaborated within the context of Istanbul and the sense of strangerhood. This book shifts the axis of Istanbul, typically known as a touristic city, to its underlying details through the strangers in the modern city. Five different films set in this region are analyzed in the text that help to reveal and clarify the socio-urban life of modern Istanbul. The characters and stories in these films tell how Istanbul has socially and architecturally become a city of strangers. The films analyzed include 'A Touch of Spice' (2004), 'Men on the Bridge' (2009), 'A Run for Money' (1999), 'Distant' (2002), and '10 to 11' (2009). The theoretical framework of this book is based on the works of Georg Simmel, Zygmunt Bauman and Richard Sennett. These three thinkers have all attempted to look for answers to the sociological question of strangerhood in urban living. This book accomplishes this connection by discussing the similarities and differences between each of their theories regarding the city, cinema and strangerhood.

"Once described by the New York Times as "the quintessential French Romantic, half adventurer, half-intellectual," actor, singer, and political activist Yves Montand won the hearts of audiences around the world with a charisma and talent that transcended physical and linguistic borders. Born in Italy as Ivo Livi, Montand achieved international recognition for his singing and performances in films such as Salaire de la Peur (1952) and Let's Make Love (1960) with Marilyn Monroe, with whom he had a passionate but short-lived affair. An Oscar and BAFTA Award winner who was also twice nominated for a Câesar Award for best actor, Montand's success was not limited to his work in film. Discovered and mentored by Edith Piaf, his interpretations of French songs were intense and intoxicating. His mellow baritone voice led to Broadway stardom and sent him on tour, making him one of the best-known entertainers of his day. Yves Montand: The Passionate Voice profiles Montand's complex, dynamic, and extraordinary life. From his birth in an Italian village near Florence in 1921 to his "accidental" immigration to France, his international success as an actor, singer, and activist to his sudden death from a heart attack in 1991, Joseph Harriss covers every aspect of Montand's life and career. Drawing on foreign-language biographies, Montand's autobiography, specialized studies, interviews, and other archival materials, Yves Montand is a riveting and multidimensional account of Montand's story and legacy"--

Have Ken, Can DoBefore Disney art director, animator, and writer Ken Anderson's death, historian Paul Anderson spent hours talking to Walt Disney's "tenth old man". Their candid, revelatory conversation, presented here for the first time anywhere, charts the creative life of this multi-talented Disney Legend.Walt Disney famously called his top nine artists and animators the Nine Old Men. Like the fifth Beatle, there was a tenth old man: Ken Anderson. A jack of all trades, Anderson was equally adept in the studio working on films like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and One Hundred and One Dalmatians and as an architect and designer of Disneyland and Epcot Center.Despite an occasionally rocky relationship with Walt, Anderson was trusted with the studio's most important films, and later became an integral part of the Imagineering team responsible for Disneyland. At times reverential, at times critical, but always revealing, Anderson gives an unvarnished, insider's account of the Disney film and theme park empire like no other.Over the course of 20 meticulously transcribed and edited cassette tapes, recorded before Anderson's death in 1993, you'll enjoy a unique, extensive, first-hand account of the earliest days of the Disney studio through the decades after Walt's death.

"Networked Bollywood provides the first interdisciplinary analysis of the role of stars in the transformation of Hindi cinema into a global entertainment industry. The first Indian film was made in 1913. However, filmmaking was recognized as an industry almost a hundred years later though Indian films have been circulating globally since their inception. This book unearths this oft-elided history of Bollywood's globalization through multilingual, transnational research and discursive cultural analysis. It illustrates how, over the decades, a handful of primarily male megastars, as the heads of the industry's most prominent productions and corporations, combined overwhelming charismatic affect with unparalleled business influence. Through their 'star switching power', theorized here as a deeply gendered phenomenon and manifesting broader social inequalities, India's most prominent stars instigated new flows of cinema and industrial collaborations, structured distinctive business models, and influenced state policy and diplomatic exchange, thereby defining the future of Bollywood's globalization"--
It was on Friday, May 6, 1988 that Bette Davis walked off the set of her last film Wicked Stepmother. Her exit for reported health reasons created a media stir when writer and director Larry Cohen decided to finish the film without her, using the footage he captured during her time on the set and rewriting the film to explain her absence. Davis blasted the film and its director, but when she died months after the film's release, Wicked Stepmother would become forever connected with the legendary star, marking her final big screen appearance. Wicked Becomes Her revisits the later years of Bette Davis' illustrious film career, including the collection of horror films that kept her in the public eye, but through the lens of her final film - Wicked Stepmother. Though Davis abandoned the film shortly after production began, the story behind the making of the film gives readers a new look at the person behind the star. By looking at her work on features like What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?; Hush, Hush ... Sweet Charlotte; Dead Ringer; The Nanny, Burnt Offerings and more, readers will discover the drive of a movie star, whose desire to remain active in her later years was so strong that she would justify a film for no other reason than the fact that her name was on the marquee as its star. Filled with photos and new details behind the production of some of her most beloved films, Wicked Becomes Her offers a new glimpse into the final years of one of the most iconic and successful actresses of the 20th Century.

«This fascinating study of gesture makes an original contribution to film studies through the persuasive insights it offers into the significance of gesture in its different manifestations in post-New Wave cinema. Meticulous analysis of an eclectic choice of examples and compelling meditations on wider questions of social conditioning, human memory and gender make this book essential reading.»(Dr Albertine Fox, Senior Lecturer in French Film, University of Bristol)Since the invention of cinema in the late nineteenth century, gesture has been a central preoccupation and source of innovation for early film pioneers and avant-garde filmmakers. A non-verbal form of expression and communication characterised by movement, gesture is a key theoretical concept in film analysis that raises crucial questions about the medium specificity of cinema. This book uses an interdisciplinary and intermedial approach to read gesture in terms of its interplay with film technology and its relations with the visual and performing arts. The author examines the aesthetics of gesture in a selection of films made during a complex historical and cultural period marked by the disintegration of the French New Wave, the uprisings of May 1968 and the decline of postwar economic prosperity. The book offers an in-depth study of the works of major and often under-explored French and Francophone filmmakers, artists, writers and intellectuals, including Chantal Akerman, Fernand Deligny, Jean-Luc Godard, Pierre Klossowski, Anne-Marie Miéville, Georges Perec, Bernard Queysanne, Jacques Rivette, Renaud Victor and Pierre Zucca. While revitalising the expression of gesture in modern sound cinema, their films developed radical ways of representing and revealing the impact of sociocultural conditioning on the body.
Anime is exploding on the worldwide stage! Anime has been a staple in Japan for decades, strongly connected to manga. So why has anime become a worldwide sensation? A cursory explanation is the explosion of online streaming services specializing in anime, like Funimation and Crunchyroll. Even more general streaming services like Netflix and Amazon have gotten in on the game.Anime is exotic to Western eyes and culture. That is one of the reasons anime has gained worldwide popularity. This strange aesthetic draws the audience in only to find it is deeper and more sophisticated than its surface appearance. Japan is an honor and shame culture. Anime provides a platform to discuss "universal" problems facing human beings. It does so in an amazing variety of ways and subgenres, and often with a sense of humor. The themes, characters, stories, plotlines, and development are often complex. This makes anime a deep well of philosophical, metaphysical, and religious ideas for analysis.International scholars are represented in this book. There is a diversity of perspectives on a diversity of anime, themes, content, and analysis. It hopes to delve deeper into the complex world of anime and demonstrate why it deserves the respect of scholars and the public alike.
This volume brings together renowned scholars and early career-researchers in mapping the ways in which European cinema ¿whether arthouse or mainstream, fictional or documentary, working with traditional or new mediä engages with phenomena of precarity, poverty, and social exclusion. It compares how the filmic traditions of different countries reflect the socioeconomic conditions associated with precarity, and illuminates similarities in the iconography of precarious lives across cultures. While some of the contributions deal with the representations of marginalized minorities, others focus on work-related precarity or the depictions of downward mobility. Among other topics, the volume looks at how films grapple with gender inequality, intersectional struggle, discriminatory housing policies, and the specific problems of precarious youth. With its comparative approach to filmic representations of European precarity, this volume makes a major contribution to scholarship on precarity and the representation of social class in contemporary visual culture.Watch our book talk with the editors Elisa Cuter, Guido Kirsten and Hanna Prenzel here: https://youtu.be/lKpD1NFAx2o
