This book explores 2010s Hong Kong film industry, focusing on its (presumably) independent sector. Although frequently mentioned in global film industry studies, the term ¿independent film¿ does not always carry a clear meaning. Starting with this point, this book studies closely Hong Kong¿s new indie cinema of the 2010s from political, economic, social, cultural, and film industrial perspectives, arguing that this indie cinema was vital to the long-term sustainability of the city¿s film industry.

Luchino Visconti's The Leopard (Il Gattopardo, 1963) tells the story of an aristocratic Sicilian family adjusting to the realities of political and commercial modernity after the unification Italy during the Risorgimento. The film, starring Claudia Cardinale, Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon, met with success upon its initial release, winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and having a successful theatrical run in Europe. Despite this, however, it did not do well with English-speaking audiences, and eventually even fell out of favour with Italian audiences, who took issue with the way Risorgimento history was represented. David Weir's study of the film seeks to understand the film's paradoxical place in Italian film history. He argues that Visconti's use of artifice, narrative and history, all aspects that came to be criticised, were in fact, essential to his cinematic art, and can all be understood as strengths of the film. Providing a scene-by-scene analysis of the film, as well as illuminating its relationship to the Lampedusa novel from which it was adapted, Weir suggests that Visconti's film goes beyond mere adaptation, using the form of the novel for cinematic purposes and making The Leopard a cinematic novel in its own right. He goes on to situate the film within Visconti's career, questioning whether the uneven reception of the film reflects the paradox of Visconti's social status as a Marxist aristocrat and his position as an auteur director whose films borrowed heavily from the decadent tradition, while at the same time professing allegiance to the Italian Communist Party.
Ken Loach's 1969 drama Kes, considered one of the finest examples of British social realism, tells the story of Billy, a working class boy who finds escape and meaning when he takes a fledgling kestrel from its nest.David Forrest's study of the film examines the genesis of the original novel, Barry Hines' A Kestrel for a Knave (1968), the eventual collaboration that brought it to the screen, and the film's funding and production processes. He provides an in depth analysis of key scenes and draws on archival sources to shed new light on the film's most celebrated moments. He goes on to consider the film's lasting legacy, having influenced films like Ratcatcher (1999) and This is England (2006), both in terms of its contribution to film history and as a document of political and cultural value. He makes a case for the film's renewed relevance in our present era of systemic economic (and regional) inequality, alienated labour, increasingly narrow educational systems, toxic masculinity, and ecological crisis. Kes endures, he argues, because it points towards the possibility for emancipation and fulfilment through a more responsive and nurturing approach to education, a more delicate and symbiotic relationship with landscape and the non-human, and an emotional articulacy and sensitivity shorn of the rigid expectations of gender.

AUDIO DESIGN is for writers, directors, editors, producers, camera, and sound persons, set designers, production managers, podcasters, all with the heart of a poet. Audio Design is not so much about "making" as it is about 'thinking". While it has some basic technical references and "how to" guidelines, it is more about visual and aural imagination. "A sound always evokes an image", Bresson says. Audio Design is designed to wet the appetite for personal exploration and growth. . Audio Design is about the storytelling functions of sound in film, television, multi-media. It wants the reader to think about how sound can be used creatively in place of the visual. It fosters aural ideas and analytical thinking about how to explore the narrative functions of sound. It covers the building of voice, music and effects tracks and how they can affect the audience. It discusses the formal elements of film and television production and believes that a form without feeling is a failure.
After the Rungan warriors decimate the Lord invaders, they must decide what to do next. Knowing the Spears sent them to die, their next move seems obvious: take back Burunga and liberate their fellow Rungans from King Robert's betrayal. As they march back to the palace, they find several weapons storehouses and abandoned towns, all left in haste during the boulder slide. The Rungans lay down their primitive weapons, trading them for the rocket launchers and guns the Spears denied them. Leaving behind reinforcements to train, Colm continues his march to the Royal Palace.Once there, they're greeted with a triumphant welcome from King Robert and his officers. But behind the scenes, they again plot to destroy the Rungans out of fear of retribution. Though many on the council stick up for the warriors and regard them as heroes, their voices are drowned out by King Robert. He plans a ceremony of honor where the Spears will take out the remaining Rungans.Colm is not fooled. He sees through their ceremony, asked to leave all weapons outside, and plots a counter-attack. He and the warriors, now confident and strong from their victory, are ready to fight to save their country and their people. In a final stand, they surround the Royal Palace and use the weapons they collected to destroy those inside. Leaving only a few alive, King Robert is bloody and broken, but questioned and held accountable for his betrayal. His ally in the Palace, Lynzo Mesfin, tells Colm a harrowing secret: his parents are alive. The president has been kept in a Dumpster since King Robert betrayed him. Colm and his family are taken to meet him, but the reunion is tainted by Robert's torture-- the president, Colm's father, believes the return of his children to be a trick to get him to comply. But through persistence, they finally convince him. Weakened by the imprisonment, the president calls Colm before the warriors he led so valiantly in battle. Over the sound of their cheers, Colm is sworn in before them, as the new president of Burunga.
By the time of his death in 1973, John Ford was probably the most celebrated director of Hollywood's golden age. The winner of four best director Oscars, he was the first filmmaker to be awarded his country's highest civilian honour, the Medal of Freedom, and the man chosen by the American Film Institute to receive its first life achievement award. In his work, Ford returned regularly to the same themes, employed the same actors and had a visual style that was personal and distinctive. This volume explores his preoccupations throughout his long, garlanded career, showing how he attempted to come to terms with American history, with how America kept changing its relationship with history and with how many of the myths of the 'West' were just that - myths.

"George Lucas is an innovative and talented director, producer, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose prolific career spans decades. When Star Wars (1977) was released, the groundbreaking motion picture won six Academy Awards, became the highest grossing film at the time, and started a cultural revolution that continues to inspire generations of fans. Three decades and countless successes later, Lucas announced semiretirement in 2012 and sold his highly successful production company, Lucasfilm, to Disney. Thalberg Award, the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award, induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame and the California Hall of Fame, and a National Medal of Arts presented by President Barack Obama. "The author of The Butler and Showdown examines 100 years of Black movies--using the struggles and triumphs of the artists, and the films themselves, as a prism to explore Black culture and the civil rights movement in America. Beginning in 1915 with D.W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation--which glorified the Ku Klux Klan and became Hollywood's first blockbuster--Wil Haygood gives us an incisive, fascinating, little-known history, spanning more than a century, of Black artists in the film business, onscreen and behind the scenes. He makes clear the effects of changing social realities and events on the business of making movies and on what was represented on the screen: from Jim Crow and segregation to white flight and interracial relationships, from the assassination of Malcolm X to the O.J. Simpson trial to the Black Lives Matter movement. He considers the films themselves--including The Imitation of Life, Gone With the Wind, Porgy & Bess, the Blaxploitation films of the 70s, Do The Right Thing, 12 Years a Slave, and Black Panther. And he brings to new light the careers and significance of a wide range of historic and contemporary figures: Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Poitier, Berry Gordy, Alex Haley, Spike Lee, Billy Dee Willliams, Richard Pryor, Halle Berry, Ava Duvernay, and Jordan Peele, among many others. An important, timely book, Colorization gives us both an unprecedented history of Black cinema, and a groundbreaking perspective on racism in modern America"--
"Al Jolson, born Asa Yoelson, immigrated from his shtetl in Lithuania to the United States in 1894 after his father secured a job as a rabbi in Washington, D.C. A poor, Yiddish-speaking newcomer navigating a racially segregated and antisemitic America, young Jolson dreamed of becoming a star, and he did. Thanks to his immense talent and his knack for assimilating into new environments, by the time he reached his twenties he was the most famous and highly paid entertainer in America, making almost $5,000 a week at a time when the average American made $800 a year. Jolson's public adoration and widespread acceptance as a star marked the beginning of an enriching cultural transformation, a moment when the American mind opened up to ethnic and racial differences, widening the gap of acceptability. And yet Jolson himself, despite being ferociously ambitious and gigantically talented, was crippled by insecurity, often nervous to the point of collapse, prisoner to his many vices. Through Jolson, Bernstein simultaneously breaks open the history and legacy of the cultural sensation The Jazz Singer. Not only was The Jazz Singer the first feature length film with synchronized music and dialogue, but it was also taboo smashing in its content: The Jazz Singer is all about Jews, Orthodox and otherwise. Bernstein expounds on the making of The Jazz Singer, what the film meant then and now, introducing the many individuals involved in its production, including Samson Raphaelson, a young Jewish writer whose short story was the basis for the movie; the four Warner brothers who made a fortune off it; and George Jessel, Jolson's rival and the star of Raphaelson's stage adaptation of his short story. In the background emerges a picture of old Hollywood in the Roaring Twenties: cutthroat and greedy yet visionary and progressive. And while The Jazz Singer represented the future in many ways, it also dredged up the worst of the past, including Jolson's use of blackface, common at the time. At once a tale of the Judaizing of American culture and an acknowledgment of the challenges to come, Only in America is a glistening examination of a man at the center of a watershed moment in the arts"--
