When I started to prepare the introduction to my first book, The Golden Age of the Spanish Dance, I mentally hesitated. I expected to write about these acknowledged early artists from the viewpoint of an outsider looking into history. However, it became apparent to me that I had to fill gaps and include my thoughts, opinions, and observations within the historical storyline. This second book, Legends of Spanish & Flamenco Dance, includes individual encounters with Pilar Lopez and her stories about her sister La Argentinita and the artists that performed in their company. Then studying with Rosario Perez and meeting with Antonio Ruiz Soler added more history to the pages. Many dancers who crossed paths with these icons of dance are included in this chronology of Spanish dance. I originally arrived in Madrid to study Spanish dance, but I became so fascinated by my teachers and began making notes and asking questions with the idea of authoring books on the Spanish dance.

The idea that morris dancing captures the essence of ancient Englishness, inherently carefree and merry, has been present for over 400 years. The Ancient English Morris Dance traces the history of those attitudes, from the dance's introduction to England in the fifteenth century, through the contention of the Reformation and Civil War, during which morris dancing and maypoles became potent symbols of the older ways of living. Thereafter it developed and diversified, neglected and disdained, until antiquaries began to take an interest in its history, leading to its re-invention as emblematic of Victorian concepts of Merrie England in the nineteenth century. The quest for authentic understanding of what that meant led to its revival at the beginning of the twentieth century, but that was predicated on the perception of it as part of England's declining rural past, to the neglect of the one area (the industrial north-west) where it continued to flourish. The revival led in turn to its further evolution into the multitude of forms and styles in which it may be encountered today --
The author traces her development as a dancer during of the decade between 1968 and 1979, a pivotal era in Black/white relations, women's rights, and other significant developments in social traditions. The sanctions that thread through the American fabric to limit black lives can be seen in the description of her journey, which looks forward to her eventual success but focuses more often on her difficulties in balancing the aspirational needs of her trickster body with the responsibilities of family life on a small-town campus. Meditative interludes take us back to Easter's upbringing in Richmond, Virginia, in the midst of a highly talented family of musicians and educators, and the recollections of her elder family members take us back to the era of slavery and abduction. Dance enthusiasts and anyone familiar with the highly charged emotional climate of a modern dance troupe will enjoy her descriptions of joining, managing, and creating dances for such a group.
