This volume explores linguistic diversity and complexity in different urban contexts, many of which have never been subject to significant sociolinguistic inquiry. A novel mixture of cities of varying size from around the world is studied, from megacities to smaller cities on the national periphery. All chapters discuss either the multilingualism or the pluricentric aspect of the linguistic diversity in urban areas, most focussing on one urban centre. The book showcases multiple approaches ranging from a quantitative investigation based partly on census data, to qualitative studies flowing, for example, from extensive ethnographic work or discourse analysis. Inwieweit hat der Erwerb der Muttersprache gute oder schlechte Einflüsse auf den Erwerb der Zweitsprache und folglich auf den schulischen Bildungsweg? Die Arbeit fokussiert sich auf diese genannten Fragestellungen und verfolgt das Ziel, argumentativ eine geeignete Methode hinsichtlich des Zweitspracherwerbs zu finden. Darüber hinaus werden weitere Fragestellungen betrachtet: Wie steht es mit dem generellen Verhältnis zwischen dem Erwerb zweier Sprachen von Geburt an und dem versetzten Erwerb von Sprachen (Beginn der zweiten Sprache im Kindergarten)? Welche Voraussetzungen und Einflüsse bringt der Zweitspracherwerb mit sich? Welche Vorgehensweise für den Erwerb zweier Sprachen ist effektiver, und welcher Weg ist der erfolgreichere? Zu Beginn werden wichtige Begriffe definiert und aufgeklärt. Termini wie Erstspracherwerb, Mehrsprachigkeit, Bilingualismus und Semilingualismus werden erläutert. Anschließend werden bestimmte Charakteristika des frühkindlichen Spracherwerbs aufgegriffen, und darüber hinaus wird der doppelte Erstspracherwerb mit dem versetzten Spracherwerb verglichen. Danach werden die unterschiedlichen Theorien zum Erst- und Zweitspracherwerb beschrieben. Anschließend folgt ein sehr wichtiger Teil der Arbeit, welcher bestimmte Phänomene und Einflussfaktoren der Zweisprachigkeit in Betracht zieht. Insbesondere sind diese Aspekte für einen ausführlichen Schlussteil von wichtiger Bedeutung.
