Pashto/Pushto/Pukhto is a group of varieties used by as many as 30 million people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, yet a grammar describing these varieties collectively has not been published. The CASL Pashto grammar originates from extensive use of both primary and secondary materials. It attends to features of both spoken and written forms of Pashto and exemplifies the latter generously with naturally-occurring sentences. Detailed descriptions are provided of the phonology and orthography and of the inflectional and derivational morphology applied to all major word classes, with special attention to the complex morphology of verb formation and descriptions of the multiple pronominal systems. Notes on some of the prominent syntactic constructions are provided as a descriptive basis for learners of Pashto and for those interested in syntactic properties characteristic of South Asian languages. For the first time, the highly distinctive Middle dialects, including Waziri, receive attention next to the other major dialect groups. A formal grammar focusing on the morphology is an available companion work.

The book focuses on the interaction of persons with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurobiological developmental disorder, characterized by problems with social interaction, over-sensitivity to sensory stimuli and restricted interest (APA 2013). Problems with social interaction being a core feature of ASD, there is a scientific and a societal need for a book focusing on this topic. The book approaches the interaction of persons with ASD from a new angle. Firstly, where most studies on ASD are based on data coming from experimental settings, this book is based on naturally occurring data coming from group therapy sessions where 11¿13-year-old Finnish- and French-speaking boys with ASD talk with each other and with their therapists. Secondly, the book treats a variety of themes that have so far been studied much less than, for example, the pragmatic problems of persons with ASD. These themes include the following aspects: speech prosody (characteristic features, perception of atypicality by neurotypical listeners), disfluencies of speech (comparison with neurotypical controls), comprehension problems (role of prosody, role of disfluencies, other causes), gaze behavior (eye contact avoidance strategies, using gaze as a source of feedback) as well as therapists¿ response strategies and teaching orientations. The book is intended for researchers working in the field of autism, professionals working with persons with ASD as well as for families of persons with ASD.
Alpha-Phonics is a comprehensive reading instruction program designed to empower beginners of all ages. This program aims to provide tutors, parents, and teachers with an easy-to-use tool to teach reading. With carefully drafted exercises and lessons, readers will develop strong reading skills to tackle words and sentences easily. Alpha-Phonics aims to play a fundamental role in language development with effective teaching methods. It aims to revolutionize homeschooling and the overall education setup by introducing more than 3,500 words in its simple 128 lessons. It offers tried and tested solutions for learners learning to read or trying to improve their grip over spelling. It also works very well for older, even grown adults, students who need remediation. It is highly endorsed by leading homeschooling product reviewers Cathy Duffy and Mary Pride. Simplicity is something that makes Alpha-Phonics work so well. The foundation of Alpha-Phonics lies in simplifying lessons, as the beginner can start reading simple sentences by lesson three. Sometimes, it can happen as early as the first day. Result? You can sense the reading success on the very first day. Other programs often end up making things a little more complicated. They inject grammar, pictures, and other material that can make it hard for a learner to grasp the true essence of the lessons. With Alpha-Phonics, you teach only reading. Out of many elements that make Alpha-Phonics stand out is a BONUS in that you EASILY teach SPELLING as you go, lesson by lesson. Parents and tutors can spend a few minutes with each lesson doing oral and written dictation to teach spelling. The Robinson Curriculum organization regularly recommends Alpha-Phonics for learners struggling with phonograms. Alpha-Phonics works exceptionally well in teaching phonics, systematic phonics, or teaching English as a second language. There is also a 24/7 Helpline if you need assistance and a practice workbook.
This book presents results in a study toward bringing acoustic and articulatory phonetics together for sonorant sounds, and, in particular, vowel production. Peter Ladefoged suggested proceeding in this project in his textbook, A Course in Phonetics. In acoustic phonetics the resonances, or formants, of the vocal the vocal tract is the primary way that vowels are characterized. In the present book, formants are examined using a physical acoustics approach; pressure, velocity distributions and energy densities of the formants of sonorants are used to examine tubes described by area functions. It is discovered that constriction length should be employed in an articulatory description of sonorants, in addition to the degree of constriction, place of constriction. Additional important parameters for English vowels are degree of lip rounding and larynx height. A new mathematical quantity called spatial phase is derived that can be used predict resonant, or formant, frequencies from area functions. This easily understood mathematical concept is slowly introduced using examples through much of the book. Spatial phase complements and generalizes acoustic perturbation theory. A special chapter on short constrictions and expansions describes their detailed physical acoustics and when lumped electrical elements are appropriate. The book concludes with numerical examples on how eight monophthongs of American English can be classified with the parameters of an area function model. That is, a simple area function vowel space is derived. The author calls for more systematic empirical studies of the relation between vocal tract articulation and vocal tract area functions.
Originally published in 1899, The Organs of Speech and Their Application in the Formation of Articulate Sounds is a groundbreaking work on linguistics and phonetics. Von Meyer examines the physical mechanisms of speech, including the throat, lips, and tongue, and how they contribute to the formation of sounds in various languages. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the science of language and communication. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Spanish Translation: The Sound We See is the second in a series of children's listen and look books written by Speech and Language therapists. It is designed to encourage early sound and rhyme play.
This book contrasts variations in Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation, using as a reference for discussion the mainstream careful speech of news anchors at the national level or the equivalent type of speech: a well-educated style that nonetheless sounds natural. Pursuing an innovative approach, the book uses this view of language as a cornerstone to describe and discuss other social and regional variants relative to that speaking register. It is aimed at speakers of Spanish interested in learning Portuguese and speakers of Portuguese who want to learn Spanish, as well as language specialists interested in bilingualism, heritage languages, in the teaching of typologically similar languages in contrast, and readers with interest in Phonetics and Phonology. The book employs a variety of innovative approaches, especially the reinterpretation of some of the traditional concept in Phonetics, and the use of speech prosodies and speech melodies, a user-friendly strategy to describe speech prosody in languages and speech melody in music through musical notation.
