Could the shlock-rock '70s band Kiss in any way affect the outcome of a death-dealing twenty-first-century virus? Is Bob Ross--that permed, inimitable painter of Edenic nostalgia on PBS--actually an emissary from the land of personal loss? Might the work of Edward Hopper reflect facets of a global plague? What is the grammar, finally, of grief, of isolation? The essays in Chad Davidson's Bring Out Your Dead: Elegies from the Plague Year mainly concern the loss of the author's father directly before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ways in which the pandemic itself provided a strangely ideal backdrop to grieving. Refracted through the kaleidoscopic, yet strangely stagnant, isolation period in the first year of COVID, his father's death--another plague visited on the author--found its way into all his waking hours, coloring whatever he tried to write, particularly when he tried not to let it. Friends both lost and nearly so, the burning of Notre Dame in Paris, even the seemingly inconsequential discovery of a rash of chew toys in the yard: these events assumed an unmistakable gravity, considered in the midst of a pandemic and the ruins of personal grief. Bring Out Your Dead adds Davidson's father to the growing list of loved ones lost in--and, in this case, right before--the pandemic. It's a personal memorial, given over to a father's memory and the grief endured while living through dueling plagues (one viral, the other psychological). In the end, the book becomes more about the ways we eulogize, how we remember those who are gone, why their memories persist, and what summons them back into our thoughts, our language, and our lives.

These powerful essays share critical moments of a writer's life: scenes from sixty years of passionate married love; suicides faced and suicide contemplated; trauma at the DMV; a night lost searching for a harpsichord in the mountains of Florence, Italy; the tale of a beloved cousin whose plane is shot down by Japanese Zeros; and a precious friendship between two women writers derailed by the poisons of religion and politics. In the titular essay (included in Best American Essays 2023) a food bank, assuaging the pandemic's terrors with gifts of food and prayers, becomes a portal for intimate confidences entrusted to us by a voice of unspoiled authenticity and perennial vigor.

"Covid-19 stole so much. But one of the things it couldn't steal was the power of stories."¿From the author of the international bestseller The Headmaster's Wife and other novels comes a collection of essays written during the Covid-19 pandemic while the author sheltered in place in his tiny Vermont town. While in isolation, he observed a small town at its best: neighbors helping neighbors, the joys of gardening, the pleasure of a small boy riding his bike, and walks in the park with his dog Hugo. Childhood memories and stories of family life are intertwined, and what the reader gains is a sense of community, family, and belonging. "¿¿I sat on my porch, and thought about how small my world had become," writes Greene. His world, and these stories, may be small, but they show us how the human capacity for love is grand, and how that love is greater than the ills that befall us. In Notes from the Porch Greene's capacity for true storytelling is at its finest, and it's a great gift to us all.

Climate shocks - and the many negative climatic tipping points - are all too real. So are positive, economic ones pointing in theright direction. The climate race is on, and despite the best attempts by some, there's no going back. Low-carbon, high-efficiency technologies will only get better and cheaper over time. Getting off fossil fuels. In this collection of over a dozen globally syndicated columns, written over the past year since the US Infl ation Reduction Lawbecame law, climate economist Gernot Wagner takes a sober look at both unmitigated climate risks and the trillion-dollarbusiness opportunities of the clean-energy race. Not every company or country will win. The one clear winner: the planet.Wagner lays out in clear, crisp language what it takes to take advantage of the opportunities, how to avoid some of thepitfalls, and how the EU and the rest of the world should respond to the US.
