    Den glücksborgske familie har i 2013 siddet på den danske trone i 150 år, vores nuværende dronning i mere end en fjerdedel af denne tid. Da kompromiskandidaten, den ret ukendte tyske prins Christian af Glücksborg, i 1863 overtog den danske trone efter den barnløse Frederik 7. var hans opgave klar: Han skulle være samlingspunkt i en statsdannelse, som bestod af både kongeriget Danmark og hertugdømmerne Slesvig, Holsten og Lauenborg. Men forholdet mellem Danmark og Glücksborgerne var meget tæt på at ende som en kort, ulykkelig forlovelse. Kun få dage efter sin tiltræden måtte kongen underskrive en ny forfatning, der med usvigelig sikkerhed ville føre til krig. Efter nederlaget i 1864 stod tyske Christian tilbage med en helt ny opgave: at regere en dansk nationalstat, hvis indre drivkraft bl.a. blev et inderligt had til alt tysk. Men gradvis har det glücksborgske kongehus gradvis tilpasset sig den rolle, som gør monarken til den måske mest respekte-rede statsinstitution i landet. Vejen er gået igennem flere alvorlige politiske kriser i forholdet mellem monark og stat. Jes Fabricius Møller fortæller levende om Christians 9.s succesfulde etablering af et nyt dansk dynasti og om sønnen Frederik 8.s kortvarige regering. Og om hvordan sønnesønnen Christian 10., den første glücksborger med dansk som modersmål, førte udenrigspolitik på egen hånd under 1. Verdenskrig og senere blev anklaget for at have begået statskup. Monarkiet blev reddet af Thorvald Stauning, og især under besættelsen udviklede forholdet sig til et frugtbart samarbejde, hvor kongen var et samlende nationalt symbol og samtidig fungerede som effektivt redskab for regeringens politik.     Navnet Jerichau har været mig bekendt siden min tid på Københavns Universitet. Dengang kom jeg dagligt til Hovedbygningen på Frue Plads, og derfor gik jeg ofte forbi statuen af David foran Frue Kirke, og her så jeg navnet Jerichau i bunden af statuen. Ved besøg på Statens Museum for Kunst havde jeg set Panter­jægeren med navnet Jerichau, og naturligvis kunne man se navnet Jerichau på mange af Glyptotekets statuer og figurer. Ligeledes havde jeg på et vist tidspunkt set billeder af maleren Jens Adolf Jerichau på udstillingen på Lousiana. Og jeg havde også lagt mærke til, at maleriet ”Danmark” var malet af Elisabeth Jerichau- Baumann. Sammenhængen mellem disse 3 kunstnere havde jeg imidlertid aldrig rigtigt tænkt over. Men der var – og er – en sammenhæng. Det fandt jeg så ud af, da jeg en dag mødte en rigtig levende Jerichau – i kød og blod – under et ophold på klostret San Cataldo ved Amalfi i det sydlige Italien. Det var mit første møde med billedkunstneren Jan Holger Jerichau, oldebarn af det berømte ægtepar, billedhuggeren Jens Adolf Jerichau og malerinden Elisabeth Jerichau-Baumann og nevø af maleren Jens Adolf Jerichau. Det vakte min interesse og gav stof til eftertanke. Det er så hensigten med denne bog at gøre rede for kunstnerslægten Jerichau i historisk perspektiv og med udgangspunkt i den (foreløbig) sidste udøvende kunstner på stammen, Jan Holger Jerichau. Nærværende fortælling om kunstnerslægten Jerichau er en ­beretning om det usædvanlige og helt enestående i, at så mange medlemmer af familien over så lang en årrække har kunnet føre den kunstneriske tradition videre.
