"In recent years, more and more of our lives takes place online. But what about our afterlives? Thanks to the digital trails of data we leave behind, much of "who we are" can be reconstructed-even after our death. Sooner than we think, the dead will outnumber the living on Facebook, and in time, AI technology will allow us to "interact" with the departed. In this short, thought-provoking book, Carl èOhman asks us to consider what happens to our data after we pass away. How do we decide what data should be preserved? What sorts of ethical issues does it raise? We live in what èOhman calls the post-mortal condition, one in which the dead and the living coexist online through digital remains. Examining government digital heritage committees, public archives, NGOs, museums, and commercial institutions, èOhman analyzes various forms of data preservation and digital reanimation, ultimately calling for us, as a society, to acknowledge and to engage creatively with our condition. He calls for us to reevaluate the relationship between the living and the dead, and to work together to create a shared ethics of preservation. This isn't just the duty of our digital overlords. These are our lives, our deaths, and it is time we think seriously about how we want our data to be treated"--

The concept of smart cities holds environmental promises: that digital technologies will reduce carbon emissions, air pollution and waste, and help address climate change. Drawing on academic scholarship and two case studies from Manchester and Helsinki, this timely and accessible book examines what happens when these promises are broken, as they prioritise technological innovation rather than environmental care. The book reveals that smart cities' vision of sustainable digital future obfuscates the environmental harms and social injustices that digitisation inflicts. The framework of "broken promises", coined by the authors, centres environmental questions in analysing imaginaries and practices of smart cities. This is a must read for anyone interested in the connections between digital technologies and environment justice.
Available Open Access digitally under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. This book presents an in-depth analysis of the complex and often controversial world of fertility care. Drawing on extensive ethnographic research and interviews with patients and professionals, the book critically examines the tensions between evidence-based medicine and the demands of an increasingly commercialized fertility care industry. It sheds light on controversial "add-on" treatments, and an emerging hope market. With its interdisciplinary approach, this is an essential resource for readers in the fields of science and technology studies and medical sociology.
This book offers an in-depth investigation into the digitisation processes of Europe's border regime. It shows how sociotechnical imaginations of future borders drive forward the expansion of databases in the European governance of mobility. With a focus on the European Union Agency eu-LISA, one of the most significant and rapidly advancing actors in the digital border regime, the book serves as a gateway to understanding the key agents, visions, technologies and practices at work. Asking broader questions about exclusion, discrimination, violence and mobility rights, this is an original contribution to our understanding of future borders in Europe.
Recent decades have witnessed the creation of new types of property systems, ranging from data ownership to national control over genetic resources. This trend has significant implications for wealth distribution and our understanding of who can own what. This book explores the idea of ownership in the realm of plant breeding, revealing how plants have been legally and materially transformed into property. It highlights the controversial aspects of turning seeds, plants and genes into property and how this endangers the viability of the seed industry. Examining ownership not simply as a legal concept, but as a bundle of laws, practices and technologies, this is a valuable contribution that will interest scholars of intellectual property studies, the anthropology of markets, science and technology studies and related fields.
"A microhistory of abortion in nineteenth-century United States, which tells the story of Josephine McCarty, an abortionist and female physician tried for murder in upstate New York in 1872"--
My wife, Sally, suffered and died after a decade-long struggle with dementia. Her experiences retold here, along with my own as her caregiver, can help people making a similar end-of-life journey. To assist them, I propose and discuss a humane way to deal with dementia at the end of life, one that Sally believed in and would have enthusiastically endorsed for herself: the Right to Die. Because Sally could not exercise her right to die, we had to endure her traumatic final years in memory care as she struggled with her steadily worsening affliction, forgetting who she was and what gave meaning to her life, with the result that both she and I were relegated to the ranks of the forgotten. The book includes a "Tool Box" of resources to assist individuals who are seeking help and support in their caretaking endeavors. I hope this book will stimulate readers to think differently about how we die and how we should be allowed to die.
Bist Du Dir sicher?
"A sweeping exposâe of the U.S. government's alliance with data brokers, tech companies, and advertisers, and how their efforts are reshaping surveillance and privacy as we know it. Our modern world is awash in surveillance. Most of us are dimly aware of this-ever get the sense that an ad is "following" you around the internet?-but we don't understand the extent to which the technology embedded in our phones, computers, cars, and homes is part of a vast ecosystem of data collection. Our public spaces are blanketed by cameras put up in the name of security. And pretty much everything that emits a wireless signal of any kind-routers, televisions, Bluetooth devices, chip-enabled credit cards, even the tires of every car manufactured since the mid-2000s-can be and often is covertly monitored. All of this surveillance has produced an extraordinary amount of data about every citizen-and the biggest customer is the U.S. government. Reporter Byron Tau has been digging deep inside the growing alliance between business, tech, and government for years, piecing together a secret story: how the whole of the internet and every digital device in the world have become a mechanism of intelligence, surveillance, and monitoring. Tau traces the unlikely tale of how the government came to view commercial data as a principal asset of national security in the years after 9/11, working with scores of anonymous companies, many scattered across bland Northern Virginia suburbs, to build a foreign and domestic surveillance capacity of such breathtaking scope that it could peer into the lives of nearly everyone on the planet. The result is a cottage industry of data brokers and government bureaucrats with one directive-"get everything you can"-and, as Tau observes, a darkly humorous world in which defense contractors have marketing subsidiaries, and marketing companies have defense contractor subsidiaries. Sobering and revelatory, Means of Control is our era's defining story of the dangerous grand bargain we've made: ubiquitous, often cheap technology, but at what price to our privacy?"--
Private Censorship is about free speech and how corporations and social groups can interfere with it. J.P. Messina asks and variously answers questions like: what should we think when employees get fired for things they say? When is it appropriate for social media firms to deplatform users, and what does it mean for our democracy that those in charge of such decisions are often wealthy Silicon Valley executives? Do search engines act as massive gatekeepers to information in troubling ways, and how might they be constrained if so? Messina argues that while there is much to worry about when it comes to these exercises of private power, it would be a mistake to simply do away with them, as some have suggested.
To be a poet is to create and march to one's own beat. To be a poet against the malignant rhythm of this godforsaken prison, is a revolutionary act governed by a love greater than the hate Pete is so often forced to bear. Pete is a poet. He is not beyond a prisoner's burden, but he refuses to allow it to define him. From a broken and bruised place, Pete's poems are butterflies that cannot be confined. This collection of 100 poems is an embodiment of his perseverance and a reflection of our struggle as a species. - Howard Guidry
