A powerful and urgent explanation and vindication of our human rights and freedomsAfter the devastation of World War Two, the international community came together to enshrine fundamental rights to refuge, health, education and living standards, for privacy, fair trials and free speech, and outlawing torture, slavery and discrimination. Their goal was greater global justice, equality, and peace. That settlement is now in danger, attacked by opponents from across the political spectrum and populist and authoritarian movements worldwide. We are threatened by wars, inequality, new technologies and climate catastrophe, and we need our human rights now more than ever. In this powerful, accessible book, Shami Chakrabarti, lawyer, parliamentarian and leading British human rights defender, shows us why human rights are essential for our future. Outlining the historic national and international struggles for human rights, from the fall of Babylon, to the present day, Chakrabarti is an indispensable guide to the law and logic underpinning human dignity and universal freedoms. Her intervention will engage both sceptics and supporters, equipping believers in the battle of ideas and persuading doubters to think again. For human rights to survive, they must be far better understood by everyone.
Governmental Power Market-Ing in the VU-CHAOS World is a thought-provoking book that explores the blended concepts of state governance, marketing, and management. Readers will gain insights into future trends in government theory and practice, including strategic approaches for stateless players and net states. Case studies and comparative applications offer real-world examples and practical implications. Governmental Power Market-Ing in the VU-CHAOS World is an essential resource for academics, researchers, policymakers, and anyone interested in understanding the complex interplay between governmental power and market dynamics in today's evolving global landscape.
¿This book examines whether Australiäs constitution should be reformed so as to enable the country to fulfil its obligations under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which it ratified in 2009. The book surveys the history of the constitutional status of Australiäs Indigenous peoples from the time of colonisation through to the current debate on ¿Indigenous constitutional recognition¿. However, it argues that the term ¿Indigenous constitutional recognition', implying that mere acknowledgement of the existence of Indigenous peoples is sufficient to meet their legitimate expectations, misrepresents the nature of the project the country needs to engage in. The book argues that Australia should instead embark upon a reform programme directed towards substantive, and not merely symbolic, constitutional change. It argues that only by the inclusion in the constitution of enforceable constitutional rights canthe power imbalance between Indigenous Australians and the rest of society be addressed. Taking a comparative approach and drawing upon the experience of other jurisdictions, the book proposes a comprehensive constitutional reform programme, and includes the text of constitutional amendments designed to achieve the realisation of the rights of Australiäs Indigenous peoples. It ends with a call to improve the standard of civics education so as to overcome voter apprehension towards constitutional change.
The Constitution of the German Reich, usually known as the Weimar Constitution, was the constitution that governed Germany during the Weimar Republic era. The constitution declared Germany to be a democratic parliamentary republic with a legislature elected under proportional representation.

"A critical, interdisciplinary account of how refugees and their oral testimony are judged by refugee-receiving states. A comprehensive legal analysis of systems of refugee status determination in Australia and Canada and the role of narrative studies and narrative theory in understanding international refugee law and its application"--
"Joshua Douglas takes us behind the scenes of significant cases in voting rights--some surprising and unknown, and some familiar--to investigate the historic crossroads that have irrevocably changed our elections and the nation. In crisp and accessible prose, Douglas tells the story of each case, sheds light on the intractable election problems we face as a result, and highlights the unique role the highest court has played in producing a broken electoral system."--
"Lawyers don't often admit this in mixed company, but Madiba Dennie wants to let you in on a secret: There is no one true way to interpret the Constitution. Americans saw just how subjective it can be when the Supreme Court denied basic bodily autonomy to millions of people in its Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision, suggesting that our rights and liberties are frozen in a cherry-picked version of history. This is a line of constitutional interpretation called originalism--a framework that says we must be constrained by the meaning of the Constitution's text when it was written. It has a reputation as a serious intellectual theory, but as Dennie argues in The Originalism Trap, originalism is more like dream logic: It seems reasonable at first, but when you wake up and see it clearly, it's revealed as nonsense. Originalism deliberately over-emphasizes a particular version of history that treats civil rights gains as categorically suspect. According to Dennie, it's time to let it go. The Originalism Trap discards originalism in favor of a new approach that serves everyone: inclusive constitutionalism. Dennie disentangles the Constitution's ideals from originalist ideology and emphasizes the power of the Reconstruction Amendments. These post-Civil War amendments, which are conveniently ignored by originalists, sought to build a democracy with equal membership for marginalized persons. The Originalism Trap argues that the law must serve to make that promise of democracy real. In chapters on how originalists are diminishing our right to vote, stealing the right to control our own bodies, and manipulating the way we are counted in the census, Dennie shows readers that the Constitution belongs to them and how they can use it to fight for their rights"--
