This book aims to document the history, experiences, culture, assimilation, and identity of girmitiya community. It also critically analyses the articulation, projection, and production of their experiences of migration and being immigrant, their narratives, tradition, culture, religion, and memory. It also explores how this labour community formulated into a diaspora community and reconnected/created the home (land) and continues to do so in the wake of globalization and Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This book is an attempt to bring the intriguing neglected diverse historical heritage of colonial labour migration and their narratives into the mainstream scholarly debates and discussions in the humanities and the social sciences through the trans- and interdisciplinary perspectives. This book assesses the routes of migration of old diaspora, and it explains the nuances of cultural change among the generations. Some say the streets of New York City are paved with gold, full of wealth and opportunity. In 1911, five young immigrant women search for their promise of the American Dream while working at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. But battling poverty and dangerous working conditions, can they keep their dreams alive?Or will it all turn to ashes?REVIEWS***** "This is a beautiful piece of storytelling."- Plays to see***** "As the audience left this impressive production, I could hear some of them talking about Grenfell, reminding us how little things have changed in over a hundred years."- British Theatre Guide**** "Paved with Gold and Ashes is a masterfully crafted piece which allows a glimpse into the very real running themes of classism, racism, and sexism. It's powerful in delivery, clear in intent, and has the potential to truly pack-a-punch." -- everything-theatre.co.uk"A striking piece of theatre, a significant piece of history." ̶ oughttobeclowns.com*****"Thurston's agonising and attentive descriptions of the factory fire is one of the most effective pieces of dramatic writing I have ever seen. Set against a red glow, the fire is brought to life with words and words alone. What is said and described is horrible and unfair. Thurston's writing provides an unflinching mirror to today, where the malpractice of economic giants still persists. Thurston reminds us that there is nothing accidental about these catastrophes that result in the murder of citizens and employees - they are the final movement in a larger process, of what happens when those who have worked tirelessly in order to maintain a dream of the future, are disregarded by those who are living that dream." ̶ broadwaybaby.com

Louisville, Kentucky's cemeteries starkly illustrate the city's socioeconomic divides, revealing a history of disparity through their headstones and monuments. The history-rich city of Louisville, Kentucky, offers stunning examples of haves and have-nots. Nowhere is this social chasm displayed more plainly than in its cemeteries. The 154 cemeteries within the city demonstrate how the socioeconomic factors that separate us in life follow us into death. A National Cemetery, including the ornate crypt of a United States President and his wife, stands in stark contrast to the neglected City Cemetery. Less than fifteen minutes away in a nearly 300-acre majestic cemetery, a barbed-wire-topped wall separates it from a deeply troubled and neglected 28-acre lot. Across the city, examples of the chasm that is Louisville is highlighted tombstone to tombstone. This photo series takes the reader on an exploration of the headstones, tombs, vaults, and monuments of Louisville's dead--persons of note, stillborn children, entire families, war veterans, and more, lost forever to time. Across these grave markers, one finds genuine pieces of art, erased by time and neglect. The many graveyards and cemeteries of this unique city serve as a portal, looking at the history of Kentucky.
Volume III of a three-part series provides information on over 90 cemeteries located in Tennessee, near areas that may have been impacted by flooding, wave action, and construction, necessitating grave removal. Transcriptions for each grave are accompanied by a brief description of the cemetery and its location. A wealth of maps and a surname index add to the value of this work.
Explores mountain regions as cultural landscapes that have been shaped by long-term human-environment interactions.
The Key to the Door frames and highlights the stories of some of the first black students at the University of Virginia. This inspiring account of resilience and transformation offers a diversity of experiences and perspectives through first-person narratives of black students during the University of Virginia's era of incremental desegregation. The authors relate what life was like before enrolling, during their time at the University, and after graduation. In addition to these personal accounts, the volume includes a historical overview of African Americans at the University--from its earliest slaves and free black employees, through its first black applicant, student admission, graduate, and faculty appointments, on to its progress and challenges in the twenty-first century. Including essays from graduates of the schools of law, medicine, engineering, and education, The Key to the Door a candid and long-overdue account of African American experiences at the University of Virginia.
"In the early 1900s, at the dawn of the "American Century," few knew the intoxicating power of greed better than white men on the forefront of the black gold rush. When oil was discovered in Oklahoma, these counterfeit tycoons impersonated, defrauded, and murdered Native property owners to snatch up hundreds of acres of oil-rich land. Writer and fourth-generation Oklahoman Russell Cobb sets the stage for one such oilman's chicanery: Tulsa entrepreneur Charles Page's campaign for a young Muscogee boy's land in Creek County. Problem was, "Tommy Atkins," the boy in question, had died years prior-if he ever lived at all. Ghosts of Crook County traces Tommy's mythologized life through Page's relentless pursuit of his land. We meet Minnie Atkins and the two other women who claimed to be Tommy's "real" mother. Minnie would testify a story of her son's life and death that fulfilled the legal requirements for his land to be transferred to Page. And we meet Tommy himself-or the men who proclaimed themselves to be him, alive and well in court. Through evocative storytelling, Cobb chronicles with unflinching precision the lasting effects of land-grabbing white men on Indigenous peoples. What emerges are the interconnected stories of unabashedly greedy men, the exploitation of Indigenous land, and the legacy of a boy who may never have existed"--
"In stunning full color and accessible text, a graphic adaptation of the American Book Award winning history of the United States as told from the perspective of Indigenous peoples"--
A collection of family records for 39 families in the state of Oregon can be found in these documents, detailing surnames in the family, kinship, and lines of descent. In some cases, extra biographical data is included, such as the head of household's occupation or place of residency. This work includes complete transcriptions of family data from about 70 Bibles found in various museums in the Willamette Valley. It appears that many of the families came from the Midwest or northeast. An index alphabetized by surname or place name at the head of each bible record is used to conclude this work.
A gripping and deeply revealing history of the infamous slave rebellion that nearly toppled New Orleans and changed the course of American historyIn January 1811, five hundred slaves, dressed in military uniforms and armed with guns, cane knives, and axes, rose up from the slave plantations around New Orleans and set out to conquer the city. Their march represented the largest act of armed resistance against slavery in the history of the United States. American Uprising is the riveting and long-neglected story of this elaborate plot, the rebel army's dramatic march on the city, and its shocking conclusion. Daniel Rasmussen illuminates the early history of New Orleans and provides new insight into the path to the Civil War and the slave revolutionaries who fought and died for justice and the hope of freedom.

This two-volume textbook teaches about the uniqueness and the difficulty of the European unification project. It describes, as clearly as possible, what Robert Schuman declared in 1950, that "... Europe will not be made all at once¿". Navigating the nexus of four academic fields - political science, institutional analysis, economics, and history - the book serves as a reference work for accurate, exhaustive, and well-researched information on the creation and functioning of the European Union. Supported by numerous photographs, diagrams, maps, and sources, volume 1 sets out in a concise and readable way the European historical origins, the important steps in the creation of the European Union, and the treaties and historical events that have marked its course so far. Providing a comprehensive picture of the unification process and the functioning of this sui generis edifice of a united Europe, the book will serve as an essential textbook for undergraduate and graduate students studying the subject of European integration, as well as a useful resource for a broader audience interested in the European integration process.
For years no one has known the exact location of Fort Trial or Fort Mayo in Virginia, from the Revolutionary War period. Many have speculated, but the author takes you through the research process with the deeds, wills, and probates that deal with the land swaps and assignments to find the actual locations and the homes of the men who owned the property. He also talks about how George Washington visited the forts and helped develop the line of forts along the frontier. Along the way he finds a mystery surrounding John Marr, one of the wealthiest men in the country who died penniless. What happened to his fortune? Is there a buried treasure out there? This book explores the issue of salinization in the context of contemporary conflicts about irrigation, water, and the environment in Australia, considering the Murray-Darling Basin in particular. It provides an environmental and social history charting the transformation of rural communities in the basin through the salinization of soils and water. Focusing on the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation district in the southwest of the Murray-Darling basin ¿ the largest irrigation district in Australia ¿ it explores the history of state-directed, large-scale engineering in the district, where the environment has been altered dramatically to facilitate white agricultural settlement inland. Changes to the landscape led to extensive salinization, however ¿ a significant environmental threat in Australia. This book traces the impact of these changes on rural communities, taking a ¿bottom-up¿ approach, highlighting the connections between environmental, social, and political change. It provides animportant reflection on the importance of environmental history for facing the challenges posed by anthropogenic climate change.
This book provides a wealth of fascinating information about many significant and lesser-known nineteenth-century Christian authors, mostly women, who were motivated to write material specifically for children¿s spiritual edification because of their personal faith. It explores three prevalent theological and controversial doctrines of the period, namely Soteriology, Biblical Authority and Eschatology, in relation to children¿s specifically engendered Christian literature. It traces the ecclesiastical networks and affiliations across the theological spectrum of Evangelical authors, publishers, theologians, clergy and scholars of the period. An unprecedented deluge of Evangelical literature was produced for millions of Sunday School children in the nineteenth century, resulting in one of its most prolific and profitable forms of publishing. It expanded into a vast industry whose magnitude, scope and scale is discussed throughout this book. Rather than dismissing Evangelical children¿s literature as simplistic, formulaic, moral didacticism, this book argues that, in attempting to convert the mass reading public, nineteenth-century authors and publishers developed a complex, highly competitive genre of children¿s literature to promote their particular theologies, faith and churchmanships, and to ultimately save the nation.
The study represents an attempt to work out the discourses and modes of remembrance that underlie the recent discussion on colonization. It deals with the question of how colonialism is remembered in contemporary narratives of the colonial era, i.e. in what terms literature refers to colonialism and for what purpose. The comparative analysis of selected african and european postcolonial narratives shows that while most of them design a postcolonial view of the colonial past, the discursive point of view of those narratives is largely dependent on the cultural-historical structure from which the texts emerged and that informed their authors, though single narratives, especially autobiographical texts by European contemporary witnesses, defy the postcolonial paradigm.

Visual Rhetorics of Communist Romania: Life under the Totalitarian Gaze offers personal accounts and theoretical insight into the Cold War era when little information about life beyond the Iron Curtain could transpire to the West. Adriana Cordali develops a unique visual rhetorical theory for analyzing communist totalitarian propaganda and the resistance to it, and reveals the deliberate, strategic in/visibilities the rhetoric of power engaged in. Building upon the local history, ideology, and politics of the regime imposed after WWII, she identifies propagandäs rhetorical features, visual tropes, and symbols and examines striking photographs and print materials from Ceau¿escu¿s regime (1966-1989) and the time of regime change (1989-1990), as well as an award-winning Romanian film that depicts women¿s life at the time. Converging visual rhetoric and culture with history and politics, Visual Rhetorics of Communist Romania is a first book of this kind and will interestreaders of rhetoric and communication, visual rhetoric, and political discourse in the region.
