Although an ally of Nazi Germany during World War II, Japan adamantly refused to accede to German demands to deal harshly with the some 40,000 Jews living under its control. While there was anti-Semitism in Japan since the early 1920s, there was also philo-Semitism and great admiration for Jewish power, influence and achievements. Japan-Israel relations were very strained and tense from 1952 to the early 1990s due to Japan's dependence on Arab oil. But since 1990 the policy of Japan has changed radically and the country is now a close friend of Israel in East Asia. Meron Medzini compares and contrasts Israeli and Japanese society, foreign policy, and above all economic and technological ties. He analyzes the presence of Jews in Japan since the 1860s and the absence of any Jewish influence, power, and involvement in Japanese arts, media, academia, politics, labor unions, and industry.

”Den største søfartshistorie, der nogensinde er fortalt.” – The Spectator Januar 1742. The Wager. – Time Magazine

English settler colonies introduced a new market structure to the Native peoples of the Chesapeake watershed. Alongside trade in goods, traders and merchants exchanged peoples for labor. The Eastern Shore of the Virginia colony provides an interesting case study that provides a clear picture of the importance of Native laborers alongside African and English laborers in the early plantation economy. Power dynamics in colonial Virginia were characterized by social hierarchies, economic interests, and the exercise of authority by influential individuals. By examining cases of illegal indenture and enslavement of Native peoples by Colonel Edmund Scarburgh in the 17th century, one can see that Scarburgh emerges as an unstoppable vigilante both at the time and in historical memory, because of his accumulation of wealth and power through the Indigenous slave trade as well as his transatlantic trade interests. Physically, and in many ways legally, isolated from the rest of the Virginia colony, the case study presented herein serves as a window into the power machinations and ambitions of one man and his desire to build his plantation empire unchecked by any conventions or rules of law.

"Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave" is an autobiographical account written by Frederick Douglass, an African American who escaped from slavery and became a prominent abolitionist and orator. The book was first published in 1845 and is considered one of the most influential works of American literature and a key text in the abolitionist movement.Key features of the narrative include:Early Life in Slavery: Douglass provides details about his birth into slavery in Maryland, the separation from his mother at a young age, and his early experiences as a slave on different plantations.Education: Despite being denied formal education as a slave, Douglass learns to read and write in secret, which becomes a crucial step in his journey toward freedom and self-awareness.Abuse and Injustice: Douglass recounts the physical and emotional abuse suffered by slaves, as well as the dehumanizing effects of slavery. He describes the brutality of slaveholders and overseers.Escape to Freedom: The narrative details Douglass's courageous escape from slavery and his journey to the North, where he finds freedom and begins his life as a free man.Activism and Public Speaking: After escaping slavery, Douglass becomes an eloquent and powerful speaker, advocating for the abolition of slavery, civil rights, and equality. The narrative reflects his commitment to social justice and his role as a leading figure in the abolitionist movement.Critique of Christianity: Douglass critiques the hypocrisy of slaveholders who profess Christianity while engaging in brutal and inhumane treatment of their fellow human beings. His narrative challenges the prevailing justification of slavery based on religious principles.Importance of Education: Douglass emphasizes the transformative power of education and knowledge, highlighting how literacy played a crucial role in his journey to freedom and his ability to advocate for the rights of others. The narrative is both a personal story and a powerful indictment of the institution of slavery. Douglass's eloquent and passionate writing serves not only as a critique of the peculiar institution but also as a call to action for the abolitionist cause. "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass" remains a significant work in American literature and an essential document in the history of the fight against slavery and for civil rights.

Rome was an empire of images, especially images that bolstered their imperial identity. Visual and material items portraying battles, myths, captives, trophies, and triumphal parades were particularly important across the Roman empire. But where did these images originate and what shaped them? Empire of Images explores the development of the Roman visual language of power in the Republic in Iberian Peninsula, the Gallic provinces, and Greece and Macedonia, centering the development of imperial imagery in overseas conquest. Drawing on a range of material evidence, this book argues that Roman imperial imagery developed through prolonged interaction with and adaptation by subjugated peoples. Despite their starring role in Roman imagery, the populations of Rome's provinces continuously reinterpreted and reimagined Roman images of power to navigate their membership in the new imperial community, and in doing so, contributed to the creation of a universal visual language that continues to shape how Rome is understood.

The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC's armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the "Second" and "Third" worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.

The authentic cases and the battle for country are accounts interwoven with the mind boggling embroidered artwork of human civilization, where the reverberations of the past resound through the present. These cases are established in the firmly established associations that networks produce with the land they possess, forming their characters and molding the course of history. The battle for a country frequently unfurls as an impactful adventure, set apart by wins, misfortunes, and the unstoppable soul of the people who try to recover or lay out their legitimate spot on the planet.Verifiable cases are the strings that wind around together the texture of a group's aggregate memory, securing them to a particular geological space. These cases radiate from a common history, a typical legacy that ties people in a continuum of time. The stories of victories, movements, and social trades portray the powers that have formed the predetermination of countries. The reverberations of old civilizations, realms rising and falling, and the recurring pattern of social tides add to the rich mosaic of verifiable cases.Amidst these verifiable cases, the battle for a country arises as a focal subject, throbbing with the desires of networks longing for a spot to call their own. This battle is in many cases conceived out of a profoundly imbued feeling of connection to a particular region, where the dirt becomes an actual space as well as a storehouse of recollections, customs, and a feeling of having a place. The longing for a country is an intense power that pushes people and networks to explore the deceptive waters of international relations, strategy, and in some cases equipped clash. The journey for a country is, at its center, a battle for self-assurance, a longing to shape one's fate and produce a future that resounds with the social and verifiable tradition of a group. This battle can appear on numerous fronts, from political developments supporting for independence to undeniable freedom developments that challenge the current international request. The pages of history are loaded with occasions of networks ascending against majestic powers, frontier rule, or harsh systems to recover their country.Nonetheless, the battle for a country isn't simply a fight battled on the actual landscape; it reaches out to the domain of stories and images. The ability to characterize the verifiable story turns into a weapon in the battle for authenticity and acknowledgment. Networks participated in this battle utilize verifiable stories as a way to state their cases, to counter elective accounts that might sabotage their objective, and to encourage a feeling of solidarity among their kin.

This book gathers contributions on the later Stuart queens and queen consorts. It seeks to re-insert Henrietta Maria, Catherine of Braganza, Mary of Modena, Mary II, Anne, and Maria Clementina Sobieska into the mainstream of Stuart and early Georgian studies, concentrating on the later Stuart queens from the restoration of King Charles II (who married Catherine of Braganza in 1662) until the death of Maria Clementina Sobieska in 1735, who was married to James Francis Edward Stuart, the titular King James III, otherwise known as the Old Pretender. It showcases these women¿s roles as queen consorts and as ruling queens in Britain and Europe, and reveals how their positions allowed them to act as power-brokers, diplomats, patrons, and religious trendsetters during their lifetimes. It also explores their impact in early modern Britain and Europe by assessing their influence in religion, political culture, and the promotion of patronage.

(zumindest zeitweise) deutschsprachig waren.

This volume studies high and late medieval material culture in a Pan-European context. The idea of ¿unity of culture¿ in Medieval Latin Europe is well known in historical texts, especially when it concerns the so-called ¿Europe North of the Alps¿. This book investigates the similarities and differences in material culture between areas, regions and political entities and opens the dialogue for a more interregional discussion. The editors acknowledge that there are numerous challenges in understanding the phenomenon the volume addresses, the fundamental one being defining (or even redefining) a common material culture of Europe. Important in determining this is greater appreciation of how objects reflect interactions between peoples, both local and foreign, which can be driven by a variety of factors, including trade, conflict and diplomacy etc. But just as important is observing the differences between ¿things¿ across Europe, reflecting developments and transformations its cultural, social and economic history. These works are traditionally presented in isolation or at the local level, maybe even in very specialized tomes, as often it is thought their observation are not relevant to wider discourses. Conversely, what is clear, however, is that by interconnecting these seemingly introvert studies of specific artefact types or sites etc., readers can better appreciate the similarities and differences in material culture across Europe. This book is of interest to researchers in archaeology and material culture.

This book explores the idea of privacy at sea, from early sixteenth-century maritime expansions to nineteenth-century naval developments. In this period, the sea became a focal point of political and economic ambition as technological and cultural shifts enabled a more extensive exploration of maritime spaces and global coexistence at sea. The exploration of the sea and the conflicts arising from establishing control over maritime routes demanded a more nuanced distinction and negotiation between State and private efforts. Privateering, for example, became a bridge between the private enterprises and the State¿s warfares or trade struggles, demonstrating that the sea required public control at the same time as it enabled private endeavours. Although this tension between private and public interests has been explored in military and economic studies, questions of how the private appeared in maritime history have been discussed only through a particularly merchantile lens. This volume adds a new dimension to this discussion by focusing on how privacy and the private were perceived and created by the historical agents at sea. We aim to move beyond the mercantile ¿private¿ as a direct opposite to the ¿public¿ or the State, thereby opening the discussion of privacy at sea as a multiplicity of lived experiences.Chapters 1, 8 and 14 are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.

Genealogies document relationships between persons involved in historical events. Information about the events is parsed from communications from the past. This book explores a way to organize information from multiple communications into a trustworthy representation of a genealogical history of the modern world. The approach defines metrics for evaluating the consistency, correctness, closure, connectivity, completeness, and coherence of a genealogy. The metrics are evaluated using a 312,000-person research genealogy that explores the common ancestors of the royal families of Europe. A major result is that completeness is defined by a genealogy symmetry property driven by two exponential processes, the doubling of the number of potential ancestors each generation, and the rapid growth of lineage coalescence when the number of potential ancestors exceeds the available population. A genealogy expands from an initial root person to a large number of lineages, which then coalesce into a small number of progenitors. Using the research genealogy, candidate progenitors for persons of Western European descent are identified. A unifying ancestry is defined to which historically notable persons can be linked.

This book explores the people of the Kikori River Delta, in the Gulf of Papua, as established historical agents of intercultural exchange. One hundred years after they were made, Frank Hurley¿s colonial-era photographic reproductions are returned to the descendants of the Kerewo and Urama peoples, whom he photographed. The book illuminates how the movement, use, and exchange of objects can produce distinctive and unrecognised forms of value. To understand this exchange, a nuanced history of the conditions of the exchange is necessary, which also allows a reconsideration of the colonial legacies that continue to affect the social and political worlds of people in the twenty-first century.

Focusing on the attitudes and experiences of American female diplomats and spouses, this book examines the social, political, and cultural dimensions of American interactions with the Middle East and North Africa in the five decades after the Second World War. A turbulent period, marked by conflicts associated with the Cold War and decolonization, it was also characterized by changing attitudes to women at odds with those in Moslem societies. The impact of those changes is explored throughout this book, principally drawing on personal oral histories included in the 'Frontline Diplomacy' collection, but reinforced by cables passing between regional U.S. embassies and the State Department in Washington DC.

This book focuses on two commercial radio stations, Radio Luxembourg and Europe n°1, which were popular institutions in Western Europe throughout the Long Sixties, working across media and broadcasting transnationally. It argues that the existence of an overarching ¿dispositif ¿ of commercial radio stations enabled them to operate on various dimensions and differentiated them from other broadcasters. The book therefore answers current calls in media history to look beyond national and single-medium borders and contributes to the cultural and media history of Western Europe.

This book is the first transcription and extensive commentary on a fascinating but almost entirely overlooked manuscript compilation of medical recipes and letters, which is held in the University of Nottingham. Collected by the Marquess and Marchioness of Newcastle, William and Margaret Cavendish, during the 1640s and 1650s, this manuscript features letters of advice, recipes, and sundry philosophical and medical reflections by some of the most formidable and influential physicians, philosophers, and courtly scholars of the early seventeenth century. These include ¿Europe¿s physician¿ Theodore de Mayerne, the adventurer and courtier Kenelm Digby, and the natural philosopher, poet, and playwright Margaret Cavendish. While the transcription and accompanying annotations will allow a diverse array of readers to appreciate the manuscript for the first time, the introduction situates the Cavendishes¿ recipe collecting habits, medical preoccupations, natural philosophical views, and politics within their social, cultural, and philosophical contexts, and draws out some of the most significant implications of this important document.

Oulun Heinäpään hurja maine on elänyt viime vuosikymmeniin saakka. Maine on pitänyt joskus paikkansa, mutta sotien jälkeiset vuosikymmenet muuttivat kaiken. Heinäpään puutalot purettiin ja poltettiin. Samalla kuoli seudun rikas hevoskulttuuri ja elämäntapa. Moni menestyjä on lähtenyt pirtun katkuisista Heinäpään kortteleista ja hellahuoneista maailmalle. Heidän joukossaan on muun muassa tunnettuja hevosmiehiä, urheilijoita, säveltäjiä, kirjailijoita ja runoilijoita. Vaikka kaupunginosan enimmät särmät ovat hioutuneet, on sillä edelleen synkkä puolensa, joka aika ajoin nousee pinnalle.Millaista elämää Heinäpäässä on vietetty? Siihen vastaavat 1940-60-luvuilla Heinäpäässä asuneet henkilöt. Lehtiarkistot paljastavat arjen karun todellisuuden 1800-luvulta alkaen.

Why did Hamas attack? What is Israel trying to achieve? Did this catastrophe have to happen? And is there a way forward? The book’s expert contributors address these and other questions, which have never been more urgent. In September 2023, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan boasted that the Middle East “is quieter today than it has been in two decades.” One week later, unprecedented violence in Gaza and Israel shattered the status quo and shocked the world.Hamas’s Operation Al-Aqsa Deluge punctured delusions of stability as hundreds of militants burst forth from the Gaza prison camp. In the ensuing carnage and firefights, 1,200 Israelis were killed and hundreds more taken hostage.Israel’s retaliation turned the besieged enclave into a howling wasteland. Nearly 30,000 people were killed in four months, including more than 12,000 children, and over 60 percent of homes were damaged or destroyed. Israel targeted the wounded and infirm, newborns and near-dead, as Gaza’s healthcare system—hospitals, clinics, ambulances, medical personnel—came under a systematic attack unprecedented in the annals of modern warfare. The Hamas massacre and the genocidal Israeli campaign which followed together mark a historic turning point in the Israel-Palestine conflict. The reverberations have also shaken politics far beyond, not least in Europe and the United States, where gigantic, round-the-clock protests for Palestinian rights pitted politicians against the public and exposed a growing statist authoritarianism. In this groundbreaking book—the first published about the 2023 Gaza war—leading Palestinian, Israeli, and international authorities put these momentous developments in context and provide an initial taking-stock.Contributors: Musa Abuhashhash, Ahmed Alnaouq, Nathan J.
