Auch die großen Schlagworte unserer Tage betreffen allesamt von zeitlichen Herausforderungen: Nachhaltigkeit, Resilienz, Transformation, Zeitenwende. English settler colonies introduced a new market structure to the Native peoples of the Chesapeake watershed. Alongside trade in goods, traders and merchants exchanged peoples for labor. The Eastern Shore of the Virginia colony provides an interesting case study that provides a clear picture of the importance of Native laborers alongside African and English laborers in the early plantation economy. Power dynamics in colonial Virginia were characterized by social hierarchies, economic interests, and the exercise of authority by influential individuals. By examining cases of illegal indenture and enslavement of Native peoples by Colonel Edmund Scarburgh in the 17th century, one can see that Scarburgh emerges as an unstoppable vigilante both at the time and in historical memory, because of his accumulation of wealth and power through the Indigenous slave trade as well as his transatlantic trade interests. Physically, and in many ways legally, isolated from the rest of the Virginia colony, the case study presented herein serves as a window into the power machinations and ambitions of one man and his desire to build his plantation empire unchecked by any conventions or rules of law.

Rome was an empire of images, especially images that bolstered their imperial identity. Visual and material items portraying battles, myths, captives, trophies, and triumphal parades were particularly important across the Roman empire. But where did these images originate and what shaped them? Empire of Images explores the development of the Roman visual language of power in the Republic in Iberian Peninsula, the Gallic provinces, and Greece and Macedonia, centering the development of imperial imagery in overseas conquest. Drawing on a range of material evidence, this book argues that Roman imperial imagery developed through prolonged interaction with and adaptation by subjugated peoples. Despite their starring role in Roman imagery, the populations of Rome's provinces continuously reinterpreted and reimagined Roman images of power to navigate their membership in the new imperial community, and in doing so, contributed to the creation of a universal visual language that continues to shape how Rome is understood.

Das Land Italien wurde in Reiseberichten des langen 19. Jahrhunderts nicht nur als europäischer Süden, sondern auch als ,Orient' wahrgenommen. Die vorliegende Arbeit evaluiert erstmals in einer Monografie die wichtigsten theoretischen Grundlagen zu dieser ,orientalischen' Lesart Italiens und leistet an den Fallbeispielen Palermo und Apulien eine intensive Quellenanalyse. Dazu werden altbekannte sowie bislang unentdeckte Reiseberichte von Briten, Deutschen und Italienern ausgewertet, und es wird auch ein Ausblick auf muslimische Reisende gegeben. Auf anschauliche Weise werden die Orientalisierungen Italiens - von romantischen Träumereien im Stile von 1001 Nacht über nationalistische Rassismen bis zu historisch fundierten Beobachtungen - analysiert und kritisch eingeordnet. Die Analyse umfasst dabei sowohl die Bereiche Architektur, Ethnographie, Historiographie wie auch Naturbeobachtungen. Die Arbeit versteht sich letztlich insofern als Innovation, als dass sie auf die historischen, rhetorischen, symbolischen und ästhetischen Mehrdeutigkeiten des europäischen Landes Italien hinweisen möchte.

The presence of Africans in the German Democratic Republic is very rarely thought of in connection with the experience of exile. Instead, Africans in the GDR are predominantly viewed through the prism of educational and labor migration. While such research has undoubtedly produced valuable insights, it often fails to adequately account for the implicit Eurocentrism, methodological nationalism, and anti-communist bias inherent in Western knowledge production. This study offers a different approach. Through biographical portrayal, it unfolds the life stories of African freedom fighters who lived in exile in the GDR and, ultimately, remained in reunified Germany, with the main case study being a Malawian activist who was expelled from East to West Berlin. Recounting his experiences along with those of some South African exiles, chief among them a former medical worker for the ANC's armed wing, the study ethnographically reconstructs the multiple entanglements between the "Second" and "Third" worlds from the vantage point of the politically displaced within the concrete historical contexts of African decolonization, the struggle against the Malawian Banda dictatorship, and the struggle against South African apartheid.

This battle can appear on numerous fronts, from political developments supporting for independence to undeniable freedom developments that challenge the current international request. The pages of history are loaded with occasions of networks ascending against majestic powers, frontier rule, or harsh systems to recover their country.Nonetheless, the battle for a country isn't simply a fight battled on the actual landscape; it reaches out to the domain of stories and images. The ability to characterize the verifiable story turns into a weapon in the battle for authenticity and acknowledgment. Networks participated in this battle utilize verifiable stories as a way to state their cases, to counter elective accounts that might sabotage their objective, and to encourage a feeling of solidarity among their kin.

This book gathers contributions on the later Stuart queens and queen consorts. It seeks to re-insert Henrietta Maria, Catherine of Braganza, Mary of Modena, Mary II, Anne, and Maria Clementina Sobieska into the mainstream of Stuart and early Georgian studies, concentrating on the later Stuart queens from the restoration of King Charles II (who married Catherine of Braganza in 1662) until the death of Maria Clementina Sobieska in 1735, who was married to James Francis Edward Stuart, the titular King James III, otherwise known as the Old Pretender. It showcases these women¿s roles as queen consorts and as ruling queens in Britain and Europe, and reveals how their positions allowed them to act as power-brokers, diplomats, patrons, and religious trendsetters during their lifetimes. It also explores their impact in early modern Britain and Europe by assessing their influence in religion, political culture, and the promotion of patronage.

In welchem Verhältnis standen Sport, Ideologie und Mobilisierung in Südosteuropa im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert zueinander? Bereits in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts dienten auch in dieser Region Sport und Körperbewegung als ein Vehikel ethnischer, nationaler und sozialer Aspirationen, die als solche medial kommuniziert und von der Öffentlichkeit wahrgenommen wurden. In der Zwischenkriegszeit bestanden gleichzeitig Tendenzen einer uniformierenden und letztlich paramilitärischen Auffassung vom Sport sowie vielfältige Formen transnationaler Kooperation. Die totalitären Regime des 20. Jahrhunderts implizierten eine ideologische Vereinnahmung von Sport und Bewegung. Die Texte internationaler Autor/innen beleuchten diese Prozesse im historischen Kontext mit Blick auf verschiedene Epochen, Staatsformen und Ideologen sowie diverse Sportarten. Ein besonderer Schwerpunkt liegt dabei auf Vereinen und Bewegungen, die sich als "deutsch" verstanden bzw. (zumindest zeitweise) deutschsprachig waren.

This volume studies high and late medieval material culture in a Pan-European context. The idea of ¿unity of culture¿ in Medieval Latin Europe is well known in historical texts, especially when it concerns the so-called ¿Europe North of the Alps¿. This book investigates the similarities and differences in material culture between areas, regions and political entities and opens the dialogue for a more interregional discussion.The editors acknowledge that there are numerous challenges in understanding the phenomenon the volume addresses, the fundamental one being defining (or even redefining) a common material culture of Europe. Important in determining this is greater appreciation of how objects reflect interactions between peoples, both local and foreign, which can be driven by a variety of factors, including trade, conflict and diplomacy etc. But just as important is observing the differences between ¿things¿ across Europe, reflecting developments and transformations its cultural, social and economic history. These works are traditionally presented in isolation or at the local level, maybe even in very specialized tomes, as often it is thought their observation are not relevant to wider discourses. Conversely, what is clear, however, is that by interconnecting these seemingly introvert studies of specific artefact types or sites etc., readers can better appreciate the similarities and differences in material culture across Europe. This book is of interest to researchers in archaeology and material culture.

This book explores the idea of privacy at sea, from early sixteenth-century maritime expansions to nineteenth-century naval developments. In this period, the sea became a focal point of political and economic ambition as technological and cultural shifts enabled a more extensive exploration of maritime spaces and global coexistence at sea. The exploration of the sea and the conflicts arising from establishing control over maritime routes demanded a more nuanced distinction and negotiation between State and private efforts. Privateering, for example, became a bridge between the private enterprises and the State¿s warfares or trade struggles, demonstrating that the sea required public control at the same time as it enabled private endeavours. Although this tension between private and public interests has been explored in military and economic studies, questions of how the private appeared in maritime history have been discussed only through a particularly merchantile lens.This volume adds a new dimension to this discussion by focusing on how privacy and the private were perceived and created by the historical agents at sea. Genealogies document relationships between persons involved in historical events. Information about the events is parsed from communications from the past. This book explores a way to organize information from multiple communications into a trustworthy representation of a genealogical history of the modern world. The approach defines metrics for evaluating the consistency, correctness, closure, connectivity, completeness, and coherence of a genealogy. The metrics are evaluated using a 312,000-person research genealogy that explores the common ancestors of the royal families of Europe. A major result is that completeness is defined by a genealogy symmetry property driven by two exponential processes, the doubling of the number of potential ancestors each generation, and the rapid growth of lineage coalescence when the number of potential ancestors exceeds the available population. A genealogy expands from an initial root person to a large number of lineages, which then coalesce into a small number of progenitors. Using the research genealogy, candidate progenitors for persons of Western European descent are identified. A unifying ancestry is defined to which historically notable persons can be linked.

This book explores the people of the Kikori River Delta, in the Gulf of Papua, as established historical agents of intercultural exchange. One hundred years after they were made, Frank Hurley¿s colonial-era photographic reproductions are returned to the descendants of the Kerewo and Urama peoples, whom he photographed. The book illuminates how the movement, use, and exchange of objects can produce distinctive and unrecognised forms of value. To understand this exchange, a nuanced history of the conditions of the exchange is necessary, which also allows a reconsideration of the colonial legacies that continue to affect the social and political worlds of people in the twenty-first century.

Focusing on the attitudes and experiences of American female diplomats and spouses, this book examines the social, political, and cultural dimensions of American interactions with the Middle East and North Africa in the five decades after the Second World War. A turbulent period, marked by conflicts associated with the Cold War and decolonization, it was also characterized by changing attitudes to women at odds with those in Moslem societies. The impact of those changes is explored throughout this book, principally drawing on personal oral histories included in the 'Frontline Diplomacy' collection, but reinforced by cables passing between regional U.S. embassies and the State Department in Washington DC.

This book focuses on two commercial radio stations, Radio Luxembourg and Europe n°1, which were popular institutions in Western Europe throughout the Long Sixties, working across media and broadcasting transnationally. It argues that the existence of an overarching ¿dispositif ¿ of commercial radio stations enabled them to operate on various dimensions and differentiated them from other broadcasters. The book therefore answers current calls in media history to look beyond national and single-medium borders and contributes to the cultural and media history of Western Europe.

Collected by the Marquess and Marchioness of Newcastle, William and Margaret Cavendish, during the 1640s and 1650s, this manuscript features letters of advice, recipes, and sundry philosophical and medical reflections by some of the most formidable and influential physicians, philosophers, and courtly scholars of the early seventeenth century.
