The present book takes up the long-debated subject of the presence of amber around the Adriatic during the Bronze Age (2nd millennium BC). It offers an exhaustive review of the current state of knowledge about the use of amber by prehistoric communities living on the opposite sides of the sea. The author focuses primarily on the spatial and chronological aspects of amber¿s acquisition in Italy and the Balkans, form and function of the artefacts made of it, issues connected to their processing and ways of circulation of these products within the study area. Furthermore, attention is paid to material and symbolic statuses of amber among the local societies. Finally, the role of the circum-Adriatic zone in the long-range transfer of amber from Northern to Southern Europe is assessed.

I 1998 udgav den danske forsker Flemming Kaul, på Nationalmuseets forlag, den monumentale afhandling Ships on Bronzes, der præsenterede og diskuterede mere end 400 skibsmotiver indgraveret i genstande fra den danske bronzealder (cirka 1700 til 500 før vor tidsregning), herunder ikke mindst den ragekniv af bronze, som enhver bronzealdermand havde med sig hele livet – og i graven. Kauls analyse af det omfattende materiale viser at skibet i bronzealderen ikke bare var det suverænt vigtigste transportmiddel (det være sig for handel eller krigsførelse), men en metafor for hele livet og verdensordenen: Solen sejlede over himlen – i samspil med diverse mere eller mindre sejlende væsener – og en mands grav var et skib. Ja, selv den omtalte ragekniv, siger Kaul, ”is a ship”.Kauls arbejde har ikke fået den opmærksomhed, det fortjente: vi taler trods alt om en epoke mindst lige så lang som dén hvor ”Danerne var kristne”, og hvis verdensbillede var en helt afgørende forudsætning også for denne periode: Lad mig ikkun drage ad natmørkt Hav, osv. Når dette ikke er blevet helt klart, skyldes det muligvis at arkæologien – i hvert fald siden den store Jørgen Jensen (1936-2008) – i nogen grad opererer med ”vandtætte skodder” over for andre videnskaber der beskæftiger sig med det samme, men med andre metoder – så som den komparative mytologi, udviklet af Georges Dumézil (1898-1986).Men sådan behøver det ikke være. Nu udkommer bogen En nordisk ur-religion, af idéhistoriker Kasper Nefer Olsen, der netop påtager sig at bringe Kauls resultater i dialog med andre forsknings-traditioner. Denne ”opdatering” (hvis første version blev til i 2014) ikke blot bekræfter og underbygger Kauls hypotese, men udvider tilmed perspektivet i både rum og tid: til hele den indo-europæiske kulturkreds, ja sågar til Ægypten (hvor, som bekendt, Solen også sejlede) og Palæstina, og såvel tilbage til stenalder som frem til jernalder. Og alt dette på kun 50 sider, uden overflødige noter og akademisk selvhøjtidelighed.Bogen er tilegnet mindet om den nyligt afdøde franske forsker Jean Haudry (1934-2023), hvis rekonstruktion af indo-europæernes ”kosmiske religion” er en væsentlig forudsætning for at forstå den nordiske bronzealders verdensbillede (La religion cosmique des Indo-Européens, 1987). En anden forudsætning er den teori om ”Tvillinge-komplekset”, som forfatteren selv præsenterede i bogen Nordisk Teologi (2019), der med fordel kan læses sammen med En nordisk ur-religion.Kasper Nefer Olsen (f. 1960) er lic. phil. i idéhistorie og har udgivet en snes bøger i diverse genrer fra videnskab til digte og debat.
