This book presents a new semiotic theory based upon category theory and applying to a classification of creativity in music and mathematics. It is the first functorial approach to mathematical semiotics that can be applied to AI implementations for creativity by using topos theory and its applications to music theory.Of particular interest is the generalized Yoneda embedding in the bidual of the category of categories (Lawvere) - parametrizing semiotic units - enabling a ¿ech cohomology of manifolds of semiotic entities. It opens up a conceptual mathematics as initiated by Grothendieck and Galois and allows a precise description of musical and mathematical creativity, including a classification thereof in three types. This approach is new, as it connects topos theory, semiotics, creativity theory, and AI objectives for a missing link to HI (Human Intelligence). The reader can apply creativity research using our classification, cohomology theory, generalized Yoneda embedding, and Java implementation of the presented functorial display of semiotics, especially generalizing the Hjelmslev architecture. The intended audience are academic, industrial, and artistic researchers in creativity.

This open access book describes Smittestopp, the first Norwegian system for digital contact tracing of Covid-19 infections, which was developed in March and early April 2020. The system was deployed after five weeks of development and was active for a little more than two months, when a drop in infection levels in Norway and privacy concerns led to shutting it down. The intention of this book is twofold. First, it reports on the design choices made in the development phase. Second, as one of the only systems in the world that collected population data into a central database and which was used for an entire population, we can share experience on how the design choices impacted the system's operation. By sharing lessons learned and the challenges faced during the development and deployment of the technology, we hope that this book can be a valuable guide for experts from different domains, such as big data collection and analysis, application development, and deployment in a national population, as well as digital tracing.

The title gives a reasonable ?rst-order approximation to what this book is about. To explain why, let's start with the expression "e;di?erential equations."e; These are essential in science and engineering, because the laws of nature t- ically result in equations relating spatial and temporal changes in one or more variables.Todevelopanunderstandingofwhatisinvolvedin?ndingsolutions, the book begins with problems involving derivatives for only one independent variable, and these give rise to ordinary di?erential equations. Speci?cally, the ?rst chapter considers initial value problems (time derivatives), and the second concentrates on boundary value problems (space derivatives). In the succeeding four chapters problems involving both time and space derivatives, partial di?erential equations, are investigated. This brings us to the next expression in the title: "e;numerical methods."e; This is a book about how to transform di?erential equations into problems that can be solved using a computer. The fact is that computers are only able to solve discrete problems and generally do this using ?nite-precision arithmetic. What this means is that in deriving and then using a numerical algorithmthecorrectnessofthediscreteapproximationmustbeconsidered,as must the consequences of round-o? error in using ?oating-point arithmetic to calculatetheanswer.Oneoftheinterestingaspectsofthesubjectisthatwhat appears to be an obviously correct numerical method can result in complete failure. Consequently, although the book concentrates on the derivation and use of numerical methods, the theoretical underpinnings are also presented andusedinthedevelopment.

Over the past decade there has been an explosion of developments in mixed e?ects models and their applications. This book concentrates on two major classes of mixed e?ects models, linear mixed models and generalized linear mixed models, with the intention of o?ering an up-to-date account of theory and methods in the analysis of these models as well as their applications in various ?elds. The ?rst two chapters are devoted to linear mixed models. We classify l- ear mixed models as Gaussian (linear) mixed models and non-Gaussian linear mixed models. There have been extensive studies in estimation in Gaussian mixed models as well as tests and con?dence intervals. On the other hand, the literature on non-Gaussian linear mixed models is much less extensive, partially because of the di?culties in inference about these models. However, non-Gaussian linear mixed models are important because, in practice, one is never certain that normality holds. This book o?ers a systematic approach to inference about non-Gaussian linear mixed models. In particular, it has included recently developed methods, such as partially observed information, iterative weighted least squares, and jackknife in the context of mixed models. Other new methods introduced in this book include goodness-of-?t tests, p- diction intervals, and mixed model selection. These are, of course, in addition to traditional topics such as maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood in Gaussian mixed models.

Mathematics majors at Michigan State University take a ¿Capstone¿ course near the end of their undergraduate careers. The content of this course varies with each offering. Its purpose is to bring together different topics from the undergraduate curriculum and introduce students to a developing area in mathematics. This text was originally written for a Capstone course. Basicwavelettheoryisanaturaltopicforsuchacourse. Byname, wavelets date back only to the 1980s. On the boundary between mathematics and engineering, wavelet theory shows students that mathematics research is still thriving, with important applications in areas such as image compression and the numerical solution of differential equations. The author believes that the essentials of wavelet theory are suf?ciently elementary to be taught successfully to advanced undergraduates. This text is intended for undergraduates, so only a basic background in linear algebra and analysis is assumed. We do not require familiarity with complex numbers and the roots of unity. These are introduced in the ?rst two sections of chapter 1. In the remainder of chapter 1 we review linear algebra. Students should be familiar with the basic de?nitions in sections 1. 3 and 1. 4. From our viewpoint, linear transformations are the primary object of study; v Preface vi a matrix arises as a realization of a linear transformation. Many students may have been exposed to the material on change of basis in section 1. 4, but may bene?t from seeing it again. In section 1.
