Melting glaciers and icecaps, massive forest fires, enormous storms, extensive and prolonged flooding, and desertification of large tracts of land are realities we currently face and will continue to struggle with as a result of climate change. Our climate crisis invites, if not demands, a critical evaluation of our political, religious, economic, and cultural narratives and rituals that give rise to our ways of relating to one another, to other species, and to planet Earth. This book argues that the climate emergency exposes deep problematic roots of Western religious and political paradigms and apparatuses that undergird ideas of and methods for human flourishing. In particular, Western religious and political philosophies have produced and maintained a radical rift between human beings and other species, as well as beliefs about human dominion over other species and the earth. These ideas and practices are responsible for the colonization of Nature and for climate change. Understanding these sources invites a radical reimaging of our religious ideas and practices. Specifically, this book proposes a coming Jesus--a form of life that traverses the rift, while denying human and divine dominion for the sake of recognizing and respecting the singularities and flourishing of all species.

Character Theology provides a natural, universal way for the world to engage God through his chosen cast of characters. As the media eras continue to change (oral to print to digital-virtual), too many Bible scholars, and consequently pastors and Bible teachers in the West and beyond, lack capability to effectively communicate Scripture to Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. These generations find little if any relevance in the Christianity promoted by those stuck in modernity's sticky abstract systematic theology. Character Theology relates, sticks, and transforms these generations. Why? Because people grasp and engage God most naturally and precisely through his interaction with biblical characters and their interaction with each other! Characters communicate the Creator's characteristics. The roadmap to the recovery and expansion of Christianity in the twenty-first century will be through Bible characters.
In a Tiantai theology, conventional truth is conventionally arisen, which means that such truth is never set once and for all, but is to be cherished and rethought in new circumstances, whether interreligious or scientific--but always in critical consonance with its ancient embodiments. Contexts shift frameworks, but life in Christ is translatable across cultures. Christian faith and theology discourage the assumption that the point of it can be clearly pinned down. God's appearance to Elijah out of the whirlwind is an eternal reminder of the paltriness of all human perspectives. Symbolic worlds of faith and wisdom are not themselves finished products. Because it has a past and a future, the cosmos itself is unfinished. Christian creeds ought not be defended as last-word ideological positions and bastions against relativity, but instead recognized in their cultural contexts and affirmed as grammars of communal and personal assent.
Sharon E. Heaney describes how the life-giving interruption of Latin American poets, novelists, artists, and theologians changed her life in a conflict-ridden Northern Ireland. An outsider, in this study she provides an engagement with a stream of theology in the United States she takes to be exemplary. Latino/a/x theology is teologia en conjunto (collaborative theology). It models ways to examine complicated and contested histories and identities, and it resists dominant assumptions about theological points of departure in favor of also valuing the everyday as locus theologicus. Identifying major themes and foundational thinkers, alongside more recent developments, Heaney offers an overview and invites readers to further reading, study, and formation. Modelling what it esteems, each chapter closes in conversation with a Latino/a/x leader in the church. The conclusion is written by practical theologian, Altagracia Perez-Bullard. She affirms, this "is not just an intellectual exercise, . . . this engagement . . . is the practice of our lives as we journey with God and as we journey with one another. . . . It is an exciting journey. It changes us."
The risen Jesus sends his disciples out as ""witnesses of repentance and the forgiveness of sins"" in his name. In a time of uncertainty for the western church--particularly for ""mainline"" congregations--this commission offers a simple framework for faithful, contextual work and witness, growing in the way of the God who sets captives free and raises the dead. One part call to action, one part celebration of the miracle that is the local church, Witnesses of These Things is an invitation to grab hold of the life that is truly life for which each one of us and this God-beloved world are made.
Leadership is vital, but how do you know which leadership theory or practice is right for you? How should you go about assessing the quality of a leadership practice? How can you evaluate leadership ideas to ensure that they line up with Scripture? How can you assess a leadership model and know it will work in your ministry setting?Evaluating Leadership provides a solution to these problems. It introduces the Leadership Assessment Matrix, which helps you assess whether a leadership theory, principle, or practice is suitable for your team and your specific context.Drawing on extensive experience and research, Evaluating Leadership delves deep into the problem, explains the model, and demonstrates how it can be applied. If you have ever had questions about how to evaluate leadership ideas or practices, this book is the book for you.
In this volume Henry G. Meecham provides a critical edition of the Greek text of the Epistle to Diognetus, accompanied by a translation, notes, and introductory material. The original publication has been lightly revised for a contemporary audience.
This volume is the sequel to its companion volume The Historical Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus during the Deist Controversy. It comprises a thorough examination of the New Testament materials undergirding the historicity of Jesus' resurrection, focusing on Jesus' empty tomb, his post-mortem appearances, and the origin of his disciples' belief in Jesus' resurrection. This revised edition includes Appendices in response to the competing views of J. Robinson, J. D. Crossan, G. Ludemann, and D. Allison.
This remarkable collection of essays explores the role of African Christianity in God's mission around the world. Featuring the contributions of African scholars and mission practitioners from throughout sub-Saharan Africa and the diaspora - including both men and women, veteran scholars, and fresh new voices - this volume provides a diverse perspective on missiology as understood and practised by African Christians. Engaging such wide-ranging topics as gender violence, globalization, Westernization, peacebuilding, development, Pentecostalism, urban missiology, theological education, and African Christianity in Europe, this volume ambitiously bridges the gap between academic and practitioner perspectives, engaging both theological discourse and the hands-on reality of how God's mission is taking shape in Africa and beyond. This book offers an empowering look at the work God is accomplishing in and through the African church.
Do you want a life full of meaning, security and peace? I've got good news-there is someone who can give that to you, and he's standing very close to you right now. The world around you may say God isn't real, and nobody matters-we're all here by chance. But deep inside, you feel your life does have meaning. You matter. And you are right! The good news is this-God is real and he loves you more than you know. If you are looking for a future and a hope, this book is for you.
Jesus did not say ""take and think."" He said ""take and eat."" This is embodied worship. It includes gestures, rites, kneeling, raising hands, and of course eating and drinking a holy meal with God. These activities are liturgies. Liturgy is the physical, embodied activity of worship--it's what we do in worship--everyone has a liturgy! As such, worship is the church's primary means of discipleship.Instead of fearing to kneel because it's ""Roman Catholic,"" or fearing to raise your hands because it's ""Pentecostal,"" perhaps we should simply see what God recommends in the Scriptures--then without fear and by faith (at the appropriate time) start kneeling, raising our hands, and eating a covenant meal with God (on a weekly basis). The hope is to replace a fear-driven approach to worship with a faith-driven, embodied worship that offers deep, robust, and beautiful worship experiences combined with the hope of great blessings. In doing so, we hope for nothing less than a new reformation--a reformation in worship.

Historically, the papacy has had - and continues to have - significant and sustained influence on society and culture. In the contemporary world, this influence is felt far afield from the traditional geographic and cultural center of papal authority in western Europe, notably in the Global South. Volume 3 frames questions around the papacy's cultural influence, focusing on the influence that successive popes and various vectors of papal authority have had on a broad range of social and cultural developments in European and global societies. The range of topics covered here reflects the vast and expanding scope of papal influence on everything from architecture to the construction and contestation of gender norms to questions of papal fashion. That influence has waxed and waned over time as successive popes have had access to greater resources and have had stronger imperatives to use their powers of patronage and regulation to intervene in society at large.
Transcripts and translations of authentic Hebrew manuscripts of Revelation, James and Jude.
Designed for beginner students of New Testament Greek, this book allows readers to easily comprehend several of the most important Scripture passages.
Let me quote this very important passage of Scripture: Hebrews 11:1-3"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible."So, this is the premise from which this book would be written. We cannot even begin to understand the Scriptures or the heart of God if we do not believe that He is. And to do that we must enact the faith that everyone of us were given at birth according to: Romans 12:3Because God always existed, we must understand and believe that He existed outside of space and time in the realm called Eternal. I believe that this is why we could understand the following passage of Scripture: Matthew 25:34-40So, He knew exactly what He was seeking to accomplish, and nothing could take Him by surprise. And that time, as we know it only began when He created it. This was done when He created the Heavens and the earth as recorded in the book of Genesis, when He established the sun and the moon and day and night causing, the establishment of days and night, and the record of days.
A critical edition of ten rare pamphlets on science and religion published from 1922-1931 by the University of Chicago Divinity School. In the years surrounding the Scopes trial in 1925, liberal Protestant scientists, theologians, and clergy sought to diminish opposition to evolution and to persuade American Christians to adopt more positive attitudes toward modern science. With funding from the Rockefeller Foundation and many leading scientists, the University of Chicago Divinity School published a series of ten pamphlets on science and religion to counter William Jennings Bryan's efforts to ban evolution in public schools. In Protestant Modernist Pamphlets, historian Edward B. Davis, who discovered these pamphlets, reprints them with extensive editorial comments, annotations, and introductions to each. Based on unpublished correspondence and internal Divinity School documents, these introductions narrate the origin of the pamphlets, as well as their funding sources and how readers reacted to them. Letters from dozens of top scientists at the time reveal their previously unknown views on God and the relationship between science and religion. Viewed together, the pamphlets and Davis's critical assessment of their historical importance provide an intriguing perspective on Protestant modernist encounters with science in the early twentieth century.
An inside look at the unique balance the Amish strike between tradition and the demands of the modern world. From technology to social forces, the Amish face an evolving modern world. Their facility in determining whether to accept, reject, or bargain with the options that challenge them allows for measured change that sustains their social fabric and beliefs. In Dancing on the Devil's Playground, James A. Cates employs a sociocultural model to analyze this negotiation and its applications in Amish culture. Cates, a clinical psychologist, draws on his extensive experience working with Amish families and communities as a mental health professional, as well as the scholarship of Donald B. Kraybill, a leading Amish expert who developed the "negotiation with modernity" model. Cates uses this paradigm to examine the Amish's principles of assessment and evaluation, their cautious tempo in response to change, and their strategies of critical analysis during negotiations. Dancing on the Devil's Playground features seven fascinating case studies of how the Amish interact with legal, health care, and civil authorities and will help readers better understand Amish perspectives on medical, social, and emotional aspects of life. These case studies include, for example, negotiation with the telephone, services for special medical needs, substance abuse, child sexual abuse, and domestic violence. These essays illustrate the negotiation techniques the Amish use to protect their unique culture while adapting to the needs of the modern world. The Amish adopt, adapt, defer, or decline the changes they face, all while maintaining their traditions and a unique identity that includes an appropriate distance from the rest of the world.
This book begins with "Is That You Lord". The nine ways God deals with mankind. The greater the level of love, the greater God's anointing on our lives."Cuttings, Carvings, & Piercing" deals with the spirit behind the necessity of tattooing and piercing. Is there a driving force behind these cravings?"A Little Wager": Is gambling a sin? If so, why? At what level does it become a demonic obsession?"Promissory Notes, Interest, and Lending" is a serious subject. When do I stand a loan for someone, and can I charge another Christian interest?"Tragedy to Triumph", the book of Ruth is a dynamic understanding of the intimate relationship of Ruth with God, which transcends our comprehension of true relationship. The next three chapters cover insecurity issues, our attitude, and our boldness in God. These three are needed in the church today. The Bible should dictate our self-esteem, not others.Do we actually go to heaven when we die? Find out the truth concerning those who die in Christ and rejoice with the actuality of God's immense love."Build My Church" is a spiritual roadmap to successfully establishing the church God intends.Handling "Domestic Disturbances" is a critical issue. Every church develops confrontations. How do I deal with these issues biblically?
Thomistic theology is rarely associated with liturgical prayer, even by many of St. Thomas's own disciples. Such a dissociation reveals more about the priorities of later Thomism, however, than it does about St. Thomas Aquinas, who himself devoted considerable energy to the contemplation of the sacred liturgy. In Thomistic Mystagogy: St. Thomas Aquinas's Commentaries on the Mass, Urban Hannon considers the saint's teaching on the meaning and purpose of the various rites that surround the holy Eucharist. Drawing on four essential texts-two from St. Thomas's earliest major work, two from his latest; two on the words of the liturgy, two on its actions-this little book pieces together a properly Thomistic commentary on the Mass. "Because in this sacrament the whole mystery of our salvation is embraced," St. Thomas says, "thus it is carried out with greater solemnity." This is a study of that "greater solemnity," and of how St. Thomas believes it relates to "the whole mystery of our salvation."
The form itself was adopted by the Synod of Dordt (1618-19) as the authoritative form for the administration and celebration of the sacrament of the Supper by both the Reformed churches in the Netherlands and by Dutch-speaking churches in the tradition of Dordt elsewhere in the world. Over the years the form has been adopted, translated, and used by most-if not all-Reformed churches that stand in the tradition of Dordt. The Lord's supper form, therefore, expresses the faith of orthodox, Reformed Christianity concerning the supper and all the rich implications of the supper for doctrine and life.
- Dwight Nelson, Pastor, Pioneer Memorial Church.
