It is important for Christians and Muslims to engage in respectful dialogue. However, it is not easy. The present book delves into the past for wisdom and guidance. Spanish theologian Martin Perez de Ayala (1504-66) wrote a catechism or Catecismo that was not published until more than three decades after he had passed away. Why was the Catecismo published posthumously? The search for answers to this question involved evaluating the Catecismo against thirteen other catechisms written in sixteenth-century Spain. This assessment generated timeless principles that can be used today by those who wish to have cordial conversations about Islam and biblical Christianity with their Muslim friends.

We don't have to live divided! We are living in a time of profound social divisions in the United States. Many of us feel deeply concerned and long for a better future for our families and our communities. What can we do that will make a difference? Trust grows when we know each other, do good for each other, and honor each other in public. Our Wisdom Traditions remind us of these truths. Neighbors of different cultures, faith traditions, and life circumstances can come together in simple yet powerful encounters.Christians are often held back by the idea that relating to people of other traditions is not faithful to Jesus. Through his work to counter the bias and bigotry of our time, Rev. Terry Kyllo has been on a journey out of the culture of supremacy into the experience of our common humanity."I was born into White Christian Supremacy. But I was not born for it. You weren't either. The Creator has more beautiful ways for us to live and is restoring what was taken from us. Jesus invites his followers to take the long, painful, joyous, and healing journey of daily baptism to find our identity among all the Creator's children, all made in God's image."Go on your own journey out of division and follow Jesus into our common humanity with Go and Do Likewise.ReviewsTerry's wonderful book is written about a topic I have been focused on for all of my teaching career. Coming from an ordained Lutheran pastor gives his interpretation of religious pluralism more currency than is possible in a university classroom setting. I can hardly wait for its publication so I can add it to my own library. But more importantly, his interpretation of religious pluralism needs to be part of the religious education curriculum of local church communities. Paul O. Ingram, Professor Emeritus, Pacific Lutheran UniversityThis book helps us to better understand the beauty of Christianity and explains how it has been misused to rationalize hatred and dehumanization of others. Rev. Kyllo teaches us to use our wisdom traditions to honor one another and to help create meaningful relationships with others. It is a powerful message.Rabbi Allison FlashIn this time of heightened white Christian nationalism and distrust in religious institutions, Terry Kyllo's Go and Do Likewise helps lead us toward a life-giving and authentic way of mutuality. In these pages you will find engaging and accessible guidance for modeling Jesus and honoring all wisdom traditions. This book is a profound gift for faith communities and individuals who wish to live out their true calling to "go and do likewise." Rev. Dr. Jana Schofield, Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, Bellingham, WAThis remarkable book is filled with wisdom and hope. The author beautifully models the precious truth that to love Jesus is to make a commitment to tame the ego and open the heart, to celebrate God's diversity on earth, and to be of humble service to all of Creation.Imam Jamal Rahman, author of Spiritual Gems of IslamAs we pursue justice in this balkanized world, we desperately need coconspirators to create a more just and humane world. In this work Terry Kyllo points us in the direction of collaboration rooted in the teaching and life of Jesus. As we engage faithful community-building behaviors this work is an important contribution to building the infrastructure of trust necessary to form healthy coalitions.Rt. Rev. This project offers an original contribution to the interpretation of the documents of the Second Vatican Council that constitute the most authoritative doctrinal teaching within the Catholic Church. The chapters in this volume, published during the 60th anniversary of the Council (2022-2025), discuss three types of stumbling blocks: ¿Stumbling Blocks for Ecumenism¿, ¿Stumbling Blocks for Interfaith Dialogue,¿ and ¿Stumbling Blocks for Church-world Relations¿. Eight specialists of ecclesiology, comparative theology, intercultural theology, and theological ethics have each written chapters on a selected line of Vatican II that constitutes a ¿stumbling block¿ or ¿hard saying¿ for believers and theologians today. The views expressed in these chapters have been discussed in three response essays. The stumbling blocks have been selected from Lumen Gentium, Unitatis Redintegratio, Nostra Aetate, and Gaudium et Spes. The selected lines discuss the difficulties the Catholic Church has with atheism and with the Eucharist as celebrated by Protestant ministers; how appreciation of other churches and religions goes hand in hand with defending the need of mission; and why the Council assigns different roles to priests and laity, making a distinction between the holiness of the Church and the sinfulness of its believers.

Is religion coming to an end? No, says religion scholar and interspiritual pioneer Netanel Miles-Yépez, it is an old and outworn idea of religion as "an-end-in-itself" that is coming to an end. "Religion," he says, "will go on; it is how we relate to it that will change, and must change, if we are to reclaim its genuine usefulness to us." In The End of Religion and Other Writings, Netanel Miles-Yépez has gathered a collection of his essays and interviews on the nature and purpose of religion, the depths and hope of interreligious dialogue, as well as his writings on Neo-Hasidism and Jewish Renewal from 1999-2019. In these highly original essays, we see the work of a brilliantly creative thinker in the early stage of his career, boldly asserting new frames of understanding for many of the issues spiritual seekers struggle with today.

Seeking a way to promote mutual respect among people of widely divergent beliefs, journalist/filmmaker/activist Ruth Broyde Sharone takes on grass-roots interfaith engagement as her personal and global mission, vividly recounting her rollicking "minefields and miracles" along the way. This captivating memoir and colorful overview of the interfaith movement-- considered a "primer" in interfaith engagement-- garnered endorsements from more than 30 global leaders of many faiths, including H.H. the Dalai Lama."The world needs more narratives of how faith can be a bridge of cooperation, rather than a barrier of division. I deeply thank Ruth Broyde Sharone for sharing her inspiring stories of bridge-building around the world," writes Eboo Patel, Founder & President, Interfaith Youth Core. Ruth's "wake-up call" occurs during her college years. After detailing her first painful encounter with religious discrimination, Ruth goes on to describe her courageous sojourn alone as a 21-year-old traversing the length and breadth of Latin America. Few young women were allowed that freedom. She emerges from that trip strongly identifying with the Latin American people and culture, and with a keen desire to explore the rest of the world. First a journalist, then a documentary filmmaker, Ruth travels in Europe and later spends 10 years making films in Israel, where she encounters the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict, a conflict that continues to haunt her even when she returns to the States. Ruth explains how, after marriage and motherhood, she is transformed into a passionate interfaith advocate--often at her own expense. She joins forces with a Black female minister to organize interfaith pilgrimages to the Middle East. Following 9/11 she is invited to screen her award-winning film, God and Allah Need to Talk, at the 2004 Parliament of the World's Religions gathering in Barcelona, Spain. In Barcelona she experiences her first taste of "interfaith paradise," which inspires her to intensify her interfaith activities around the globe. Brimming with photographs of her journeys--from California to Argentina, from Africa to India, from Italy to Green Bay, the book also includes historical photos of the remarkable individuals from around the world who participated in the first Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago in 1893. Says Pulitzer Prize winning author Jack Miles, "Readers will instantly connect with this open-hearted, often touching, occasionally hilarious, and always disarmingly personal account of inter-religious adventures and misadventures."Through Ruth we begin to understand the inner life of the peacemakers and boundary-crossers who walk among us--many recruited by Ruth as she travels and speaks extensively in churches, mosques, synagogues and universities. Yes, there are minefields along the way--and Broyde Sharone describes them clearly, seeking to learn the causes. She describes the miracles, too, as when 250 people representing 13 religious communities gather in 2011 in Los Angeles to celebrate a Festival of Freedom Seder, honoring the promise of the Arab Spring. "We are now at the tipping point," Broyde Sharone declares at the end of her compelling book. She offers vivid and concrete examples of the expansion of the global interfaith web and inspires us to view the "other" and "the stranger" as friend and fellow traveler."Ruth is a master storyteller, traversing the world, making films, weaving webs of connection, and inspiring us to do the same. She epitomizes what people mean when they ask us to become the change we want to see in the world. Read her book." -Rev.Paul Chaffee, Editor, "The Interfaith Observer" A set of questions for discussion is included at the end of the book.

"After Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI resigned from the papacy in 2013, he never stopped thinking or writing. Near the end of his life, he and editor Elio Guerriero gathered together a whole volume of new material, dealing with the themes closest to his heart. The pope asked that it be published upon his death. This final work is What Is Christianity? It takes up a kaleidoscopic array of themes: the Christian faith's relationship with other religions, especially Judaism and Islam; the theology and reform of the liturgy; the priesthood; the saints; the Eucharist; the tragedy of abuse; the beauty of nature; Italian and German culture; and much more. With prophetic insight into our times, Benedict warns of a 'radical manipulation of man' in the name of tolerance, insisting that the only 'authentic counterweight to every form of intolerance' is Christ himself--and Christ crucified. A lifelong Catholic, the late pope pays tribute to some of the giant figures of Christianity who have served him through the years as guiding stars: his predecessor Pope John Paul II, the twentieth-century German Jesuit martyr Alfred Delp, and the silent carpenter Joseph, his patron saint. What Is Christianity? is a frank spiritual testament from a theological master, a churchman who loved the faith of simple Christians but who always stood ready, even in his last days, to dialogue about every aspect of human life--in love and in truth."--

The primary objective of this Monograph No.1 is to examine and evaluate the nature, scope, characteristics and issues of the unity of the Church in Nigeria from the times of the Pioneering missionaries to date. The Nigerian Church is characterized by great regional and international growth and spread, liveliness and enthusiasm, and a great show of religiosity and a manifest diversity of churches and denominations that carry out many activities and ministries that sometimes look divisive and competitive. To the extent that on the surface, Nigerians are deeply religious in all facets of life and they do demonstrate that in their vibrant Christianity with very strong ecumenics, associations and fellowships. However, negatively, the same large and vibrant Nigerian Church is also plagued by great divisions and splinter groupings, lack of unity, stiff competition and rivalry, and is also overwhelmingly dominated by ethnic, tribal, primordial and regional values, interests and sentiments. No single church, denomination, or organization can address effectively and adequately the problems and challenges of the Nigerian social environment alone. The task of addressing the problems, challenges and prospects of unity of the Church in Nigeria is immense and difficult. The best we can do is to introduce the subject matter for wider and general discussions and deliberations by all Christians. This is how we proposed that this subject matter be addressed. The first section presents a summary of the major issues of the unity of the Church that need to be discussed and addressed. The second section gives a summary guideline on how these issues could be defined and addressed. The third section presents and establishes a biblical and theological foundations of the unity of the Church based upon select relevant Bible Texts. This seeks to give a biblical and theological understanding and grounding of the major issues and challenges of unity of the Church. The fourth section presents a brief historical and social background of the context of the Nigerian Church as an answer to many questions and issues of diversity, competition, rivalry and schisms. It also outlines and highlights the nature, scope and characteristics of the Nigerian Church. The fifth section presents a brief history of the established Missionary Christianity and Church in Nigeria and how Christian Missions attempted to deal with the questions and issues of unity of the Church in their missionary work in Nigeria.

  • af Yusufu Turaki

For more than a generation Yusufu Turaki has been one of Africa's most distinguished and productive evangelical theologians. Here in two substantial volumes we have the fruit of his mature reflection on a principal crux of the African theological project, namely the appropriate way for African Christianity to understand and address Africa's traditional religious heritage. Since one cannot understand Africa without understanding Africa's traditional heritage, and since the religious dimension Africa's traditional culture affects all aspects of modern African life, Christian presence and witness in Africa cannot flourish within its context without a serious theological and practical engagement with these realities. This is not Turaki's first endeavour in this field of inquiry. He has been engaging these issues throughout his academic and ministry careers. And in doing so he has also been interacting with the considerable range of thinkers and literature in this field. Furthermore, within what otherwise has often been an ill-defined and poorly disciplined discussion, Turaki proposes a particular and fruitful way forward. In these two large volumes Turaki is both commending and demonstrating a biblically-grounded, theologically-responsible methodology for a Christian understanding of African Traditional Religion. He seeks to show how Christianity can best address African Traditional Religion with informed realism, with scholarly depth and integrity, and with biblical faithfulness. Having taken his first degree in Nigeria, Turaki then earned masters and doctoral degrees at leading academic institutions overseas. Thereafter he was long involved in the leadership of one of Africa's principal theological institutions, Jos ECWA Theological Seminary (JETS), and in the leadership of one of Africa's principal evangelical denominations, the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA). In more recent years Turaki has also been engaged in international ministries and venues, including work with the Association of Evangelicals in Africa (AEA), the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), and the Lausanne movement (LCWE), as well as in extensive writing and teaching ministries In the first volume of this major contribution Turaki provides an in-depth study of the African traditional religious worldview. He is convinced that a thorough familiarity with the religious mindset of traditional Africa is essential for any effective Christian presence and witness in modern Africa. He first surveys both western and African scholarly approaches to traditional religion. Then he undertakes a detailed introduction to the foundational theological, psychological, philosophical, ethical, and moral beliefs of African Traditional Religion, together with the relevant rituals, sacrifices, ceremonies, and festivals. He also emphasises how those beliefs pervasively influence religious attitudes, practice and social behaviour throughout Africa today. In the second volume Turaki then turns to outline a Christian and biblical approach to the realities of African Traditional Religion in modern Africa. He discusses each major component of an African traditional worldview from this standpoint. In doing so Turaki emphasises that the principal task of Christian reflection in Africa is not to understand Christianity from the perspective of African traditional culture and religion, but to understand African traditional culture and religion from the perspective of a Christian and biblical worldview.

Have you ever imaged a world without wars, terrorism, corruption, islamophobia, crusades, jihads, hunger, strive, racism, fights, divorce, natural disasters, disease, poverty and death? Is it possible for people to live in harmony, unity and peace? Can you and I look at the person on the other side of the room, community or the world with a heart of understanding rather than suspicion? In the last 100 years or more, humanity continue to make giant leaps in discoveries about our world, people, places and things and yet peace seems to elude us and love has become a scarce commodity. The knowledge we have accumulated over the years continue to be applied rightly or wrongly based on the accuracy of the information at our disposal and depth of our understanding. As a Christian, I have written this book to call to our brothers and sisters in Christ to a heart of understanding based on the foundation of love towards Muslims and members of other faiths or believe system outside our own. This will also open the eyes of members of other faith towards the Christian faith so wise decision can be made as we pilgrim this planet full of human beings. Solomon, the wisest king who ever lived says in the book of Proverbs 4:7 "Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." Wisdom is the application of knowledge but in applying this knowledge, we need an understanding heart. We cannot have an understanding heart without love. At the end of this book, you will gain an understanding heart towards others, those of other faiths and especially towards Muslims to help you deal wisely.Shalom! Monday Ogwuojo Ogbe

If you take a look around our world today, walls are being erected everywhere between continents, countries, communities and families. Even the Church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is not spared out of segregation and denominational divides right in our very midst. This book, Borderless - Envisioning and experiencing one church community of believers without walls, borders and denominations is about unity in the body of Christ. It is calling the church to a place of unity of Spirit in response to Jesus prayer that they may be one...John 17:22. A call to our various gathering to strive for unity. That we will all envision and experience a borderless church without walls, borders and denomination. A church that despite diversity will be united in spirit and engage as one as written in Ephesians 4:5-6 King James Version (KJV)5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,6 One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. No more denominational walls and borders. Just one denomination - Jesus Christ, Our Lord and savior taking His place as the only supreme head of His church. It is an appeal and prayer to unity, to oneness, to love and to one body in one Christ Jesus. If after reading the book and you become burdened to the point of engagement with our other brothers and sisters in love in other gathering beyond your own familiar domain, creed, doctrine and denomination, then the book will have done its job and my job will have been dispensed. "Being prideful means having or showing an arrogant superiority to and disdain of that one view as unworthy. Pride can only be found where there is no love. Where there is no love, there is no God because God is love. Our love for God is the root while our love for the brethren is the fruit. Jesus says, a Christian will be known by the fruit of love they manifest. The world will know us by the love we have for one another." - Monday Ogwuojo Ogbe "A House divided against itself cannot stand - True! Whether it is the family, Church or Nation! May the good Lord show us mercy and cause us to guard against the little foxes that subtly disrupts what is good. We pray for unity of purpose in Jesus name!" - Sola Ogunnaike. "Thank you, Monday, for this exposition. The church of Jesus Christ need to realize that the greatest message of love we send to the unbelieving world is our working in unity" - Grace Akuh. "We all need one another to be the complete reflection of Him." - Rick Joyner "Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? Tozer, (The Pursuit of God)
