There is a lot said about modern preaching and how we need more sermons on hell; I will save that debate for another day. However, there is something else that I find missing from our pulpits: it is the teaching on some of the most compelling attributes of God as found in the Old Testament writings.Before we go any further, I need to make sure that you understand what this study is about. In no way am I telling you that the Old Testament God is different. To the contrary, this study is about our understanding that God is immutable; He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. GOD NEVER CHANGES. And that, my dear sisters, is the point of this study.In many of our modern-day churches we have come to understand God as unconditionally loving and forgiving. Indeed, He is loving and forgiving, but we Christians make a grave error when we assume that God has no expectations or that He makes no demands on His children.In the Old Testament writings, God directly and fully reveals His character and His attributes. This is the preface of the Rheims New Testament of 1582. The King James was published in 1611 so the Rheims was 29 years earlier than it. When the Editor purchased a photocopy of the REAL Rheims in the 1980s He was astounded that the Preface and the Annotations answered the objections to Catholicism that he had learned as a Protestant young man and during Seminary.The Preface gives a true history of the Vulgate and English Bible and answers questions that the "Reformers" and their followers still vex Catholics with to this day. Most mangle the scriptures, create straw men arguments or otherwise use false arguments to convince the unlearned to follow their errors.The Rheims New Testament was published in 1582 to provide Catholics with an authentic translation of Holy Scriptures for their use rather than the polemical ones published in England at that time by Anglicans and Puritans. The Douay Rheims Bible was considered so dangerous to Anglicanism that it was a death sentence to be found with a copy.

The Babylonian attack on Jerusalem in 587 BCE forced upon the Israelite survivors the realization that Yahweh, one of the gods they had venerated, was an overwhelming presence in their affairs. The attack on their city had been devastating, overturning virtually the only world they knew. Such a disaster had been prophesied by several prophets of Yahweh who had warned them against worshipping other gods than Yahweh and ignoring his commandments. These prophets reminded them that in the ancient past Yahweh had established a special relationship with their people, binding them to himself through a covenant in which Yahweh promised to protect and lead their people while they were to honor him as their only god and keep his commandments. The community of survivors living as exiles in Babylon, and their heirs who would return to Judah after 539 BCE, believed that Yahweh had caused the destruction of their society because of the refusal of their people to abide by the terms of the ancient covenant. Indeed, they saw it as an act of Yahweh's love, an appeal for them to honor him as their only god so that he could show them his favor. Anthropologist Robert Canfield examines the process by which this transformation in religious understanding took place, describing it as an example of how human beings imaginatively imbue their affairs with moral significance.
