The desert is a common image for Lent, evoking Jesus' temptation in the wilderness and the barren expanse we might associate with self-denial. Such a stark view of the desert fails to capture the immense potential for growth and discovery that can be found amid the shrubs. There is compassion for self and others to be cultivated along this arduous trek as we grow more aware of life's trials and traumas. Srubas uses wilderness stories both literal and metaphorical, from both Scripture and modern life, to guide readers on a challenging, yet rewarding, journey of mindfulness, empathy, commitment, and action.

This Easter, discover the power of I AM! We know that Jesus's work on the cross and His resurrection changed the world. Two thousand years later, His work is still changing lives--one person at a time--thanks in part to His I AM statements. Those simple words have the power to change your life and the world today. Hebrews says that Jesus is the exact imprint of God the Father. In the weeks leading up to his final days, Jesus made seven simple statements that revealed His closeness to God; that He was one with God. In those statements, Jesus was establishing His authority. In those statements, He revealed to the world that He shared the same attributes with God, known to Israel as the "I AM." With those statements, Jesus is inviting you into relationship where He can intervene on your behalf. Jesus, the I AM, an eight-week study devotional for the 2022 Easter and Lent season, will help you appreciate anew the gift and significance of Jesus's words. Written with a worshipful and contemplative tone, Jesus, the I AM invites you to discover the power and relevance of the I AM in your life today. This Easter, lean into the I AM.

"Faith is like gumbo; for it to be authentic, at some point you have to make it your own." In From Eden to Heaven: Spiritual Formation for the Adventurous, author Kelly Pigott describes the journey to authentic faith using the language of pilgrimage, or perigrinatio, that path that all believers travel as they seek to follow Jesus, mature in their faith, and explore their most common fears and deepest questions: What does it mean to follow Christ? Dear Sinner/Saint, prepare to be told in these pages to go home to your forgiving Father over and over.* Forward by Daniel Emery PriceEach day features a bible passagereflectionshort prayersuggestions for further reading
James wrote to Christians whose faith was under attack. Persecution, false teachings, and loveless actions were troubling God's baptized people. Things have not changed much for the church in these latter days. Though Luther referred to this letter as "an epistle of straw," James gives much wisdom to Christ's troubled bride. In his foreword to Finding Christ in the Straw: A Forty-Day Devotion on the Epistle of James, Robert M. Hiller writes "[Martin] Luther felt that this letter lacked the focus on the person and work of Jesus Christ to warrant much of his energy. Straw has its benefits but is not all that useful in the long run."However, these forty devotions, based on James, will both challenge and comfort you, while showing you Christ in the straw.

On December 17, 1927, the crew of the Navy submarine S-4 trolled beneath the waters of Cape Cod Bay, engaged in routine testing of their vessel. At the same time, the Coast Guard cutter Paulding traveled across the surface. Those traveling on the two craft never saw each other. The submarine broke the surface just in time to receive a death blow from the Paulding. The submarine, with its crew of forty, sank in less than five minutes. It came to rest more than one hundred feet below on the ocean floor.Rescue attempts began at once. Due to inclement weather, it took twenty-four hours for the first diver to descend to the wreckage. As soon as the diver's feet hit the hull, he heard tapping. Survivors were trapped inside. Pounding out Morse code on the hull with a hammer, the diver discovered that six crewmen had survived the collision. With renewed efforts, the rescue crew struggled to reach these men before it was too late. Again, the weather would not cooperate. Every attempt failed. With their air supply dwindling, the six survivors tapped out in Morse code a final haunting question, "Is there any hope?"This provocative question echoes across the craft we call Earth. By our own experience, we agree with the New Testament's words that all of creation groans for renewal and relief. The world hopes for something better. As part of this expectant world, we do the same. We hope for a better future for ourselves, our children, and our families.Hope is the intangible fuel that moves the human spirit along when life appears untenable; when marriages fail; when sickness invades; when we face difficult decisions; or when we encounter inexplicable suffering in our lives and in our world. We need hope to live on this planet the same way we need oxygen in our lungs. In our faith tradition, all hope is fastened to the child we find lying in a Christmas manger. Christians gather in houses of worship and around Advent wreaths to reflect upon the implications of his birth and to anticipate the day when hope will become certainty, when what we can only pray for now will become definite. Advent is a season to remember, but it is also a time to renew our lives of hope in the One born in Bethlehem.
What does it mean to take up the cross? In this fifth book of the Lessons Learned In The Wilderness series, pastor and author Ken Winter leads us to look at the cross our Lord has set before each one of us, as we follow Him in our wilderness journey. The backdrop is the last forty-seven days of the earthly ministry of Jesus, picking up at His triumphal entry into Jerusalem and continuing to the day He ascended into heaven to sit at the right-hand of the Father. We will look through the lens of the Gospels at what taking up the cross looked like in His life, and what He has determined it will look like in ours. He doesn't promise that there won't be a cost - there will be! And He doesn't promise that it will be easy - it won't be! But it is the journey He has set before us - a journey that will further His purpose in and through our lives - and a journey that will lead to His glory. As you read a chapter each day, or read it straight through, allow the Master to use it to draw you closer to Him as you walk with Him each day in your journey.Pick up your copy by clicking the "buy-now" button.

For readers of Richard Paul Evans and Greg Kincaid comes The 13th Gift, a heartwarming Christmas story about how a random act of kindness transformed one of the bleakest moments in a family's history into a time of strength and love. After the unexpected death of her husband, Joanne Huist Smith had no idea how she would keep herself together and be strong for her three children--especially with the holiday season approaching. But 12 days before Christmas, presents begin appearing on her doorstep with notes from their "True Friends." As the Smiths came together to solve the mystery of who the gifts were from, they began to thaw out from their grief and come together again as a family. This true story about the power of random acts of kindness will warm the heart, a beautiful reminder of the miracles of Christmas and the gift of family during the holiday season.
What could be more familiar than the Christmas story--and yet what could be more extraordinary? The cast of characters is strange and exotic: shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels, and a baby who is Almighty God. The strangeness calls for an explanation, and this book provides it by examining the characters and the story in light of the biblical and historical context. Bestselling author Scott Hahn who has written extensively on Scripture and the early Church, brings evidence to light, dispelling some of the mystery of the story. Yet Christmas is made familiar all over again by showing it to be a family story. Christmas, as it appears in the New Testament, is the story of a father, a mother, and a child--their relationships, their interactions, their principles, their individual lives, and their common life. To see the life of this "earthly trinity" is to gaze into heaven.
