«This work highlights the need for a holistic approach to the confounding issues confronting the region, confronting our age. In reminding us of the many vulnerabilities and vitalities of Oceanian communities and island worlds, it shows the potential for dialogue between disciplines and consilience between academic scholarship and local community understandings. The collection¿s clarion call for a new ¿ecosystem of knowledge¿ is utterly timely.»(Alexander Mawyer, Director, Center for Pacific Islands Studies, University of Hawai¿i)«This work breaks the barriers imposed by language and distinctive intellectual traditions in presenting a wide-ranging selection of current work from the South Pacific in the humanities, social and natural sciences. Of particular significance is the fact that Francophone as well as Anglophone scholars are represented. This gathering of minds, a meritorious initiative of the University of French Polynesia, is an invitation to ¿think the Pacific¿ in the vein of pioneer Oceanian intellectuals like Epeli Haüofa and Jean-Marie Tjibaou.»(Eric Waddell, Adjunct Professor, Université Laval, and Chercheur invité, Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD), Nouméa)This work, an initiative of the University of French Polynesia, Tahiti, showcases research collaboration between small island universities in the Pacific. It addresses a number of «big issues» for Oceania which are also big issues for the world, concerning the biosphere and human society, sustainable development and well-being. The authors seek to create an ecosystem of knowledge through a dialogue, in English and French, between the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities. The work also brings into perspective academic and traditional knowledge, with a view to enhancing cultural and agricultural practices and the development of public policy.Climate change, environmental degradation and food security are key questions for survival. How can the preservation of cultural heritage, the transmission of native languages and the integration of traditional knowledge into formal education contribute to a harmonious future? How is the phenomenon of violence relevant to an understanding of history, interpersonal relations and social inclusiveness, including for women in the political sphere? The Tongan-Fijian writer Epeli Haüofa described Oceania imaginatively as a «Sea of Islands». This volume sees Pacific islands as being interconnected in ways beyond imagining, in which nowhere is remote, where the peripheral has become a decentred centre.
This book includes information, experiences, practical initiatives and projects around the subject matter and makes it available to a wide audience. It addresses the scientific, social, political and cultural aspects of climate change impacts and respective solutions in an integrated and coherent way.Climate change as a global phenomenon imposes new challenges for survival. Extreme weather events including heat waves, storms, droughts as well as rising sea levels, warming oceans and melting glaciers threaten people's livelihoods and communities, ecosystems and habitats. Furthermore, it affects the entire food chain and increases competition for natural resources fuelling socioeconomic tensions. The results of the latest IPCC report highlight the urgent need for combating climate change. The adaptation measures to be undertaken range across sectors, thematic fields and geographical locations.Based on this need, the book focuses on the high-quality, interdisciplinary contributions on the scientific, social, economic, political and cultural aspects of climate change challenges and solutions

This books explains a strategy that a country can meet its CO2 emission reduction targets (e.g., as are in Paris Agreement) with a dominant share of nuclear power with a balanced energy supply mix. The book starts with an introduction to the subject of energy policy, mechanisms, and CO2 emissions, and the complexity of the CO2 reduction goal. It introduces the system dynamics approach as a solution modeling approach for dealing with the complexity of CO2 reducing policies and mechanisms. The book presents the dynamic model and its key parameters and then elaborates the structural and behavioral validity of the dynamic model. The book gives an intensive review to do that comparative analysis involving China, India, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Pakistan. The last half of the book focuses on the case in Pakistan. The author reviews Pakistan¿s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution and other key sources from Pakistan¿s Ministry of Energy and related institutions. Using Pakistan¿s case data, the author applies the system dynamics modeling approach whereby a dynamic model, capable of representing the important interactions among various sectors of the electricity supply sector of Pakistan. This book is intended to be of use to policymakers, managers and practitioners, teachers, researchers, and students of design and assessment of policymaking for the complex, dynamic energy systems

We must cut carbon emissions to halt climate change. But they aren't just produced by driving a car or heating a home. Upfront carbon ¿ all emissions involved in manufacturing an item ¿ can dwarf operating emissions, which is why when you look at the world through the lens of upfront carbon, everything changes.

"En imponerende og foruroligende historie. Et spændende science fiction-eventyr med imponerende landskaber. Smukt tegnet. Smukt konstrueret.
I'm offering this simple handbook to you, full of exceptional ways to make many differences to improve various things on the planet, including Climate Change situations for anyone in the world who wants a reference book of suggestions for anything that can be done to help, regarding all kinds of efforts that many people are trying to make in many places everywhere. After two years of studying how people can deal with Climate Change and some other issues on the planet as well, such as excess plastic, I found that there are essentially sixteen topics that people might want to cope with this basically in one handbook. 70% of Climate Change emissions are actually issues that are really dealt with by human beings in their everyday life, hence the title, "Everyday Life."The first topic, "Minimizing Electricity & Household Hints" specifically refers to how most of our climate change emissions are produced through the creation of electricity. Electricity is created by power plants, and vast emissions rise into the sky as electricity is formed and travels to cities and homes everywhere. This electricity is the product that we are all actually responsible for putting out from our homes and businesses, for climate change. This first section discusses how we can put out less electricity from our homes.I decided to make this handbook of suggestions really easy to follow. The suggestions don't give instructions about what Climate Change is - instead, you just find simple, easy, step by step ways to do things that help. It's easy to go on to the next topic and discover the suggestions of the next topic of How You Can Help The Planet. The three topics that stand out at the end are "13. The Stormy Times of Climate Change," "14. Dry Weather & Heat Waves," and "15. Forest Fires." These sections give professional preparatory and safety instructions for Climate Change weather conditions. We hope you don't need them, but if you do, we hope they help.
This book highlights the sustainability aspects of products and processes in forest science. The forest products sector supplies raw materials to several industrial sectors worldwide. These products can be classified as timber or non-timber products. Wood products are those that originate from the woody fraction and can include pulp, charcoal, firewood, and others. The non-timber products, on the other hand, have the products extracted from the different parts of the tree, such as bark, leaves, fruits, resins, oils, tannins, or even products extracted from non-woody biomass, such as palm heart or carnauba, among others. There are new studies and new products developed from forests worldwide each day. However, studies that evaluate the sustainability of these products and the processes related to their production are not so common. It is essential to highlight the sustainability aspects of these activities and the products obtained from them; such that steps can be taken to make the processes eco-friendly.Allied to ecological sustainability studies that evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of such activities arise. With this book, the authors through the approach of other products and processes of forest science, present the practical vision of aligning production with sustainability in an economically viable way. The book analyses different products and processes, ranging from technological production of engineered wood products to handcrafted resins with a high commercial appeal. With the expertise of different authors, who are researchers in various specific areas of forest sciences, this book helps expand research and presents new insights, assisting industry decision-makers and researchers working in the areas forest sciences.
"When Manjula Martin moved from the city to the woods of Northern California, she wanted to be closer to the wilderness that she had loved as a child. ... But the landscape that Martin treasured was an ecosystem already in crisis. Wildfires fueled by climate change were growing bigger and more frequent. ... In 2020, when a dry lightning storm ignited hundreds of simultaneous wildfires across the West and kicked off the worst fire season on record, Martin ... evacuated her home in the midst of a pandemic. Both a love letter to the forests of the West and an interrogation of the colonialist practices that led to their current dilemma, [this book] follows her ... as she seeks shelter, bears witness to the devastation, and tries to better understand fire's role in the ecology of the West"--
Why This Book? Why Now?The control of the earth's climate, including the temperature of the earth's surface and near earth atmosphere, is a complex, intricate, and beautiful system of interactions between a number of forces. These controlling factors, their interactions, and the rate and extent of those interactions, are all variables which contribute to the control of the earth's climate, including its surface temperature.I first became aware of the "Theory of Global Warming" in the late 1980's when I first found the document: (Hansen, J.E., and S. Lebedeff, 1987: Global trends of measured surface air temperature. J. Geophys. Res., 92;13345-13372). As a fruit grower during my youth; A professional horticultural researcher who had worked on different methods of frost control in fruit crops, and in basic research in those areas as well as related subjects; I was acutely aware of the greenhouse effect, its causes, and importance in the control of earth's surface temperature. The temperature of plant tissues, under various climatic circumstances has been something that has intrigued me and been a subject of my research for over 50 years. The small, but significant, increase in the earth's surface temperature, over the last 110 years has been attributed to slight increases in the concentration of carbon dioxide, methane, and other minor greenhouse gasses. The danger to the world's societies, of our present course, the result of attributing all the warming of earth's surface to the greenhouse impact of these minor greenhouse gasses, is real and alarming. If we utilize most of our available resources in limiting or decreasing the concentration of these minor greenhouse gasses, we will not have the resources required to deal with the real impacts of the major forces behind the warming of earth's surface, should they continue or increase. In this work you will be exposed to the truth about the flaws and fails of the global warming/climate change theory. You will read about, and see peer reviewed research that establishes the impacts of:A. The three forces which have increased the intensity of the sunlight reaching and warming the earth's surface.B. The role of the LaNina/ElNino cycle and the North Atlantic Oscillation in causing a major portion of the ice volume loss in, and warming of, the Arctic.C. The role of increasing levels of heat from the earth's core in causing significant ice volume and extent losses, across the Arctic and Antarctic.D. Changes in the amount of water vapor, liquid and ice in the atmosphere over long periods of time, and this forces contribution to changes in climatic patterns and earth's surface temperature. You will also be exposed to the climatic impacts of the increasing aerosol concentration in the atmosphere. The above listed causes of changes in the earth's surface temperature have all been mistakenly attributed to the greenhouse effect of the minor greenhouse gasses because of the basic Fatal Fails of the "Global Warming/Climate Change Theory". These Fatal Fails are identified and discussed in this work.
This collection highlights the practical consequences of postcolonial legacies and climate change while championing a sustainable future for Arctic development and governance.
The little-known history of how the Sahara was transformed from a green and fertile land into the largest hot desert in the worldThe Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world, equal in size to China or the United States. Yet, this arid expanse was once a verdant, pleasant land, fed by rivers and lakes. The Sahara sustained abundant plant and animal life, such as Nile perch, turtles, crocodiles, and hippos, and attracted prehistoric hunters and herders. What transformed this land of lakes into a sea of sands? When the Sahara Was Green describes the remarkable history of Earth's greatest desert-including why its climate changed, the impact this had on human populations, and how scientists uncovered the evidence for these extraordinary events. From the Sahara's origins as savanna woodland and grassland to its current arid incarnation, Martin Williams takes us on a vivid journey through time. He describes how the desert's ancient rocks were first fashioned, how dinosaurs roamed freely across the land, and how it was later covered in tall trees. Along the way, Williams addresses many questions: Why was the Sahara previously much wetter, and will it be so again? Did humans contribute to its desertification? What was the impact of extreme climatic episodes-such as prolonged droughts-upon the Sahara's geology, ecology, and inhabitants? Williams also shows how plants, animals, and humans have adapted to the Sahara and what lessons we might learn for living in harmony with the harshest, driest conditions in an ever-changing global environment.A valuable look at how an iconic region has changed over millions of years, When the Sahara Was Green reveals the desert's surprising past to reflect on its present, as well as its possible future.
Disaster research has been studied from many angles, seldom targeting its implications for vulnerable territories in Africa. Entities most subject to the effects of climate change are often undeveloped and located in disadvantaged regions. Post-disaster communities need to scrutinize the social, political, economic, and cultural structures that stagnate sustainable growth. Acknowledging that low economic development and high climate costs cannot coexist, this collected volume interrogates the challenge for disaster-prone territories to determine strategies for restructuring and redesigning their environment. This book proposes the creation of knowledge economies, whereby empowered communities may produce innovative knowledge translatable across the African diaspora.
56 million years ago our planet experienced rapid, intense warming known as the Paleocene Eocene Thermal Maximum, resulting in a global temperature increase of about 7°C. Runaway Climate explores the causes of this catastrophic event, its dramatic impact on life on Earth, and its stark lessons for our climate future.
