This book explores a spectrum of literacies relevant to dance, physical education and sports. It examines conceptions of movement literacies, disciplinary literacies and traditional school literacies. It includes theory, research and instructional practice related to the uses of traditional print, multimedia, and embodied physical literacies. These literacies function independently but are also overlapping and mutually reinforcing in comprehensive instructional planning. As movement and activity-related fields continue to explore the potential for multiple literacies, this book introduces numerous possibilities, both conceptual and practical, for consideration. · Pre-service and in-service teachers in dance and physical education programs will learn how to integrate multiple literacies in curriculum design and teaching.· Graduate students will examinetheoretical premises of movement and disciplinary literacies and become familiar with original research on these topics.· Teachers, school administrators, coaches and athletic directors will use the book in order to guide the inclusion of movement and activity-based fields in the disciplinary literacy agenda now common in Pre-K through secondary schooling. Media rich chapters, including photographic, video and other graphic images, allow students to access concepts through multiple modalities

Clyde Kinlaw is a washed-up baseball coach who wants to prove it isn't so.Kinlaw was a good ballplayer who became a loyal company man once he retired. He managed his old team, the Portland Loggers. Now he's a scout who doesn't feel as if the new generation of talent evaluators puts any stake in his judgment anymore. He wants to prove them wrong but doesn't know how. Then Kinlaw stumbles upon Taiquon Wattson.Kinlaw's only ally in the Portland front office, Frank Staley Jr., sends him to evaluate Ryne Standback, a first baseman considered one of the country's top high-school prospects. Standback doesn't impress Kinlaw, who dismisses him as a privileged white kid with all the skill money can buy. What draws Kinlaw's attention is a catcher on the other team. Wattson has all the tools but none of the attention. He's a poor kid who lives with his grandmother in a predominantly black town on the banks of the Savannah River. He's known locally for his football, not his baseball, skills. He's a catcher because it's the only position he can play without owning his own glove. Teams always provide a mitt. Taiquon is as raw as the crappie he hauls out of the river to help feed the family. All he knows about baseball is approximately how to play it.Stay away from Sandberg, Kinlaw advises Staley. Let Kinlaw take Wattson under his wing and make him a player. Wattson's not ready. The minor leagues would chew him up and spit him out. Staley finds a place for Kinlaw and Staley to hide. They get to know each other on a long, gradual drive to Texas, where Wattson is playing semi-pro ball and Kinlaw is coaching him.Kinlaw is not rid of Standback, however. Drafted first by Houston, Standback predictably flops in Triple-A, where his agent insisted he be assigned. All of a sudden, Staley smells a bargain and dispatches Kinlaw, already in Texas, to Corpus Christi for a second look. The humbled Standback, his life in ruins, sees that Kinlaw is the only scout who ever dealt with him honestly. Both young men change. Wattson loses his innocence. Standback loses his arrogance. Kinlaw regains his respect.
This is the story of Charles Hoffman "Hopper" Kennedy. He became a high school football and basketball coach in the early 1920s. He worked his way up the ladder by working with each of his players to help each of them to believe in themselves to become the best they could be and to help them form into a team. He would scout the teams he would be playing--sometimes going to their school to see the plans they were working on to defeat him. His big break came when they hired him at Lynch, Kentucky. His team had nineteen shutouts in a row, twenty-seven shutouts in three seasons. He was chosen to coach the all-star game of 1942 in Kentucky and won the game. He had two players go to the NFL: #8, Harold Mullin, tackle, 214 lbs., six feet three; and #27, Joe Hollingsworth, running back, 189 lbs., six feet two. Hopper did this at thirty-nine years old. He also played semipro basketball from 1926 to 1928 where he won the MVP for being the center. He got his nickname Hopper in college when he played world billiards champion. Willie Hoppe started calling him Hopper. He then went to Lockport, New York, to coach high school football and basketball. He turned both teams into having a winning season. He talked to each player for hours past the practice into the night. By doing this, he formed the foundation of building his players into champions. That method won the games.

Based on over 15 years of research, this text proposes a new definition of the martial arts to examine how such fighting systems are being re-imagined and reconstructed beyond the arenas of combat and sport in the 21st century Western context. Taking the viewpoint of the martial arts as art forms open to reinterpretation, this unique book considers the ways in which martial arts can be used for different purposes, such as within movement systems and for self-help and therapy. However, the martial arts industry is a highly unregulated space. The book, therefore, considers the ways in which the martial arts are being regulated by Western influencers on social media as well as more formal international organisations connected to UNESCO. The project then examines the lives of long-term martial arts instructors and practitioners of historical European martial arts (HEMA), Taijiquan (Tai Chi Chuan), Wing Chun Kung Fu and other internal martial arts such as Cheng Hsin. This book draws on a wide range of data sources including autoethnography, ethnography, life history interviews and social media and textual analysis to paint a vivid picture of the reinvention process in contemporary society. It shows how elements of the martial arts (often from East Asian societies) are being adapted, critiqued, managed and merged to suit the social needs of today¿s martial artists and the public. This monograph will appeal to all scholars and students interested in combat sports, martial arts and physical culture from a social scientific and qualitative perspective."¿his research on Mexican traditions brings a fresh perspective to the analysis of cultural influences and theoretical reflection on the heritage of martial arts¿"¿WOJCIECH J.
