"This is not the book I thought I was going to write."~Tonya ReidLife is like that sometimes, isn't it? We head down one path only to find ourselves in a completely different direction. If you can relate to this, and enjoy laughing until you cry or crying until you laugh, then you'll enjoy Tonya Reid's debut book, US Hairways. A collection of essays on legacy, lunacy, a daughter finding her way, and a father who would have made a much better older brother, US Hairways offers readers a good time the only way Tonya knows how to share it: full of Southern hospitality and irreverence smothered in butter.

Past research has shown that humans possess implicit or unconscious associations which, when activated, affect subsequent behavior. In three studies, I demonstrated a novel implicit association held by some men, an association between women and birds. In Study 1, I provided initial evidence of a Women-Bird association and its autonomy from other common prejudice measures. In Study 2, I demonstrated two consequences for possessing a Women-Bird association: increased sexist hiring decisions and increased dehumanization of women. For my third study, I demonstrated a causal pattern, such that activation of the Women-Bird association caused an increase in dehumanization of women, sexist hiring decisions, and perceptions that a female candidate was incompetent for those who possessed the association. Mediation analysis indicated that activation of the Women-Bird association among those who possessed the association resulted in sexist hiring decisions because these participants perceived the female candidate as less competent. These findings provide insight into a cause of bias toward women that should be accounted for when attempting to reduce discrimination toward women.

Building a Better Boomer offers laugh-out-loud advice for the generation caught between ChatGPT and Betamax VHS. Here's hilarious ways boomers can see better, eat better, exercise better, sleep better, retire better, and, maybe, even remember better-and still be around for the launch of the iPhone 211 Pro."Neil Offen has become one of America's greatest humorists, embracing the lighter side of the aging process with charm and wit culled from personal experience. His columns, and now this book, have become must-read."-Marty Appel, New York Times bestselling author of Pinstripe Empire and Munson"Neil Offen's timing is perfect. This is the moment when we need a book that is this funny-Offen makes us laugh at subjects that are not supposed to be funny, which may be the definition of the best humor. Building a Better Boomer never stops and never misfires."-Mark Kurlansky, New York Times bestselling author of Salt; Cod; and The Importance of Not Being Ernest"Neil Offen offers laugh-out-loud-but still practical-advice about how to deal with the indignities of growing older, all the while trying to combat aging and aging stereotypes. This is a book for all boomers, and those who care for and love them."-Steven Petrow, contributing columnist The Washington Post and author, Stupid Things I Won't Do When I Get Old"I have often heard it said that there is nothing funny about growing older. Well, as Neil Offen proves-hysterically-in Building a Better Boomer, that is wildly inaccurate. If laughter truly is the best medicine, this is a book that I heartily prescribe for my fellow boomers. Offen's sharp-and unfortunately accurate-observations will make you laugh out loud, assuming of course you can remember where you left your reading glasses. Let me suggest that the nicest thing you can give to one of our peers is this gift of laughter."-David Fisher, New York Times bestselling author"There's no better source of smiles, laughs, even guffaws, as your body deteriorates and your role in society diminishes, than these essays by humor-writer-nonpareil Neil Offen."-Mitchell Stephens, author of The Voice of America: Lowell Thomas and the Invention of 20th-Century Journalism"Neil Offen's hilarious Building a Better Boomer is a rare mix of laugh-out-loud and close-to-the-bone. Sure, it's funny but it's also insightful, sweet, and even provocative. You will read this book to laugh and keep from crying, because, as Neil so shrewdly observes, 'there is a limit on how much better we can become.'"-Frank Van Riper, author of Recovered Memory: New York & Paris 1960-1980
"What to do when you're the perpetual new kid, only child, military brat hustling school-to-school each year and everyone's looking to you for answers? Make some shit up, of course! And a young Jay Ellis does just that, with help from every child's favorite co-conspirator--their imaginary best friend. Born in the perfect storm of especially ferocious rain and a sugar-fueled imagination, Mikey ... steps in to figuratively hold Jay's hand through various youthful shenanigans. A testament to the importance of imagination, trusting oneself, and making space for your creativity, [this book] is a memoir of a '90s kid who confided in his imaginary sidekick to navigate everything from parallel pop culture universes, like watching Fresh Prince alongside John Hughes movies or listening to Ja Rule and Dave Matthews, to a lifetime of birthday disappointment (being a Christmas season Capricorn will do that to you) and hoop dreams gone bad"--
A poignant and moving memoir-in-essays from stand-up comedian Aida Rodriguez on the power of overcoming hardship and transforming pain into laughter.Aida Rodriguez has, to put it mildly, lived a whirlwind life. Her rags to-riches story is mind-blowing: She was kidnapped as a child by her mother in the Dominican Republic and brought to the US. She was later kidnapped again by her grandmother and uncle, and moved from New York to Florida. As an adult, she ended a difficult marriage and endured homelessness with her children in Los Angeles. But through it all she never lost her sense of humor.Born with a wonderful wit and an irrepressible spirit, Aida used her gifts and worked tirelessly, turning tragedy and pain into biting comedy that takes on everything from misogyny and racism to social media and news headlines. She eventually released a hit HBO Max special which led to multiple development deals--success that won her a nationwide audience, opened doors, and helped her expand the way Latinos are represented in comedy. In this, her highly anticipated first book, Aida charts her many ups and downs. From personal setbacks to career highs and everything in between, Legitimate Kid is endearing, shocking, and ultimately life-affirming.
