Every cat deserves a collection of poems written in her honor, but few are fortunate enough to have so eloquent a laureate as Laurence Avery. Josephine's self-described "attendant" chronicles with wit and warmth the details of her life in both indoor and outdoor worlds. Avery sets the tone from the very first line of the opening poem: "She's in the class of things I dote on…" then reveals in the final poem how Josephine acquired her regal name. Patricia Lockwood Davis' beautiful illustrations pair perfectly with the verse to reflect the many sides of Josephine's personality.Josephine is Avery's second collection of poetry.

It has been suggested to me by many of my catty friends that I should write a small handbook for cat fanciers. By arrangement with the Kennel Publishing Company I have been enabled to utilise the paragraphs of Practical Pussyology which have appeared during the last fifteen months in Our Cats. I have had many years experience with cats and kittens, and have also a real love for them, without which I do not believe any one to be a successful breeder and exhibitor of cats. What is worth doing at all is worth doing well, and to combine profit with pleasure is a most desirable end to have in view. The object, therefore, of this little book is to assist cat lovers to become cat fanciers. I trust that it may be found helpful and instructive, A lovely Blue female, owned by Lady Marcns Beresfard, and bred by Mrs. OBrien Clarke. Her sire was Goliath, a superb cat for size and colour. Gentian was a prize-winner at Westminster in 1899, when her marvellous coat excited general admiration was bred by Rev. P. L. Cosway, his present owner, from Angela and 131ue Noble.....
Tiger and his lady, Boston, move to the Everglades, into an old, hopefully, rat infested trailer. This tale chronicles his interactions with the wildlife. He backs carefully away from the rattlesnake and the Florida panther disrespects him before walking off. He is safe inside when the very rare crocodile walks by, scattering lubber grasshoppers. When he sees his first heron, he hides under the bed, and gets stuck. In "The Hidden Room", Tiger sulks when Boston leaves him alone for the night. He eats his food, naps, and plays with his toys. He stumbles through a concealed panel into a hidden room. There is no way out and nothing to eat and he falls asleep hoping he doesn't starve. He TP-s the bathroom in "The Lost Laptop", covering the floor with torn scraps of toilet paper and cat litter. Boston is not angry, but awed. Proud of his work, he gloats and listens to her tales of her day as he plots more mayhem.Tiger is outraged when a hawk steals his snack out from under his nose in "The Hawk and the Rock". He doesn't get any sympathy from Boston, because he's not supposed to hunt in the park.In "Family", Boston's seasonal position is over. Neither of them wants to leave the park or the people. Tiger is having fun. Boston has fallen in love. But they can't stay. Boston takes Tiger to the vet for certification so he can fly home and he gleefully terrifies the doctor. They stop to watch key deer and alligators on the way back and sit on the dock one last time.
