Some questions require a healthcare professional to determine the number of drops of solution that will be infused per minute. This is a question regarding clients who are hooked up to IV solutions. The standard formula for drops/min is: V df / hrs x 60 mins where V = volume of solution, df = drop factor, and hrs = duration in hours. Example: A burn patient has a prescription of 120 cc of IV antibiotic within 30 minutes using a drop factor of 20 cc. One of the staff nurses saw the prescription and asks the charge nurse how many drops should she run per minute. The charge nurse said 80 drops per minute. Solution: Volume = 120 cc, drop factor = 20 and duration in hours = 30 minutes Therefore: 120 x 20 = 2400 / 30 = 80 drops per minute.
