Eikonoklastes - John Milton - Bog

Eikonoklastes is a book written by John Milton in 1770 as a response to a book called Eikon Basilike. The latter book was a portrait of King Charles I during his times of solitude and suffering, which was meant to evoke sympathy for the monarch during the English Civil War. However, Milton's Eikonoklastes was written to challenge the idea of the divine right of kings and to justify the execution of Charles I. The book is a passionate defense of the republican cause and an attack on the monarchy, arguing that kings are not above the law and that the people have the right to overthrow a tyrant. The title, Eikonoklastes, means ""image-breaker"" and refers to Milton's desire to destroy the image of the king as a divine and infallible figure.
