Sydney Chambers must be court martialed after being assigned to the piratic TSM Tecumseh Sydney Chambers, newly promoted to Commander, is assigned by Navy Personnel as First Officer of the Frontier Fleet frigate, TSM Tecumseh. The assignment not only removes her from the auspices of her long-time mentor, Admiral Stephen Alexander, is also puts her under the thumb of Captain Horace Steubing ... a man with a dodgy reputation for fielty to the Confederacy. Sydney is immediately disavowed by Steubing - he can't refuse her apppointment but has no interest in dealing with an officer who is so ... honest. Sydney is left to find her own way, as well as finding the corruption aboard the Tecumseh, with only her wits and what few allies she can recruit. Meanwhile, Admiral Alexander has his own problems: the 16 Cygni system, which has no Naval presence at all because it has refused to pay for it, now pleads for as many ships as Alexander can supply. The reason? Pirates. Without the navy present, pirates have begun to run rampant. Alexander, though, has no ships to deploy to 16 Cygni. Except ... When he spies notice of Sydney's promotion, a plan begins to hatch. Searching through his fleet registry, he finds that he does have an unassigned ship, though one scheduled to retire to the scrap yards: TSM Cahan Morrigan. Morrigan's captain, Francis Furling, is also scheduled to retire, but Morrigan's First Officer, Steve Garvey, is willing to remain with Morrigan under a new captain, if Cahan Morrigan is refit and once more made able to withstand combat. Alexander jumps at the option. He has plenty of maintenance money for a refit. As for a new captain ... well, he has to somehow get Sydney out of Steubing's clutches, or a decade of nurturing her career will have been wasted. The only hitch in the plan, is that for it to succeed, Sydney Chambers must undergo a Court Martial, to officially clear her name from the "stench" of working with Steubing ...
Newly minted Lieutenant Sysney Chambers is given command of a TSM Attack Craft ... a tiny vessel, with a total crew of twelve, but deadly all the same. Then, their first mission is as spies in the unaligned Vega system, where they find the natives more than hostile ...
Sydney has been replaced as Military Attaché, and is now the Senior Officer on Station. The new Military Attaché, Commander Horace Justin, is from Frontier Fleet - and under the jurisdiction of Admiral Lady Chelsea Alexander, wife of Sydney's boss, Admiral Lord Stephen Alexander. The child of the admirals, Susan Alexander, is a lieutenant and Ship Captain of the Werewolf-class vessel TSM Wolf ... which is aasigned to 16 Cygni and to the command of Sydney Chambers. Susan is Sydney's mentee. Unfortunately the Wolf is a prototype and thus due to be returned to its manufacturer for diagnosis at a date not yet determined. Meanwhile, Susan and Wolf are backup for Sydney's Cahan Morrigan in the Cygni system. Meanwhile, Sydney sets Susan and Wolf on a case: find two missing civilians, Krista Sperry and Chloe O'Shaygnassey, who set out on the initial trading run for their new shipping company CK Hauling, in the freighter Kierkegaard. Unknown to either TSM officer Kierkegaard has been commandeered by pirates under the direction of Hermann Sakhoff, a former employee of Hans Vattermann, a pirate Sydney took down ahortly after she was first named a Captain. Sakhoff and his crew soon capture the TSM Wolf as well, giving them a potent advantage against Sydney and the Confederacy. However, Sydney wasn't made captain because of her looks. Soon enough and despite interference from what has to be Military Attaché Justin, she finds Wolf and Kierkegaard and traps them, destroying Kierkegaard and arresting Sakhoff and one other as the last pirates operating at 16 Cygni.
Psyonic searching-that's easy. Psyonic Finding-that's a lot harder. When Christina Amies taught herself Psionics, she thought she was unique. Then she began searching for kidnap victim Professor George Huttmacher. Soon, she ran into clues that could only be left by another Psionic. She hadn't expected that. But what she REALLY hadn't expected was a whole secret group of Psionics who wanted their hands on the same thing she was looking for. Then she actually met one-and the showdown began. . . . Christina's specialty is Finding things and people gone missing. With her college friend, Bill Lemly, she founded A&L Locating Service, which has developed a growing reputation for near miraculous results. Now, Christina faces her most challenging case. First, she Finds an abducted Professor, tracking him half-way across the country and assisting the FBI in a dangerous raid. He is no sooner home, though, than the Professor enlists Christina to find an "Artifact of Fabulous Power," a relic which may have huge impacts on the world as she knows it. Meanwhile, unknown to either of them, a secretive and ancient group of Psionics claims that relic as their own and will go to whatever lengths are needed to return it to their Keeping. Christina will go from believing she is the world's only Psionic to realizing she is only one of many-and that she has much to learn, if she hopes to stay alive.
The World of Amedia is wracked with storms as the planet returns to its native state following the death of Magic. Astra Fairweather and the other apprentice Wizards - the only Wizards remaining with access to Magic, save Banterell Lightningbolt, the same Blight who caused the death of Magic - cast about for some way to protect Amedia from itself. There is no way. There is, however, a chance to protect those Plain folk who are threatened by storms ... the drawback being, it will require that Astra work hand-in-hand with Blight, since neither one has enough Magic on their own.Blight swears that he has changed, that Amedia admitted it was in error in calling for the death of Magic and that Blight -who now prefers to be called "Banty" - seeks only to save Plain lives. Astra and her friends are skeptical, but Astra's "shadow girl" appears, saying that to work with Blight is necessary; all that need happen is to survive until Summer returns.Still uneasy but calmed by shadow girl's revelations, Astra sets out to save lives. Assisted by her boyfriend Nik and her partner Danni, Astra and Blight shield two cities from the devastating storm onslaught, only to find those cities later flooded by the storm aftermath. Blight again assists in rescuing survivorsNot everyone can be saved, though, and the thousands of Plain deaths drive Blight beyond the bend. Killing thousands of Wizards had already left Lightningbolt with a tenuous grip on sanity; now, he falls over the edge into full madness, leaving Astra as the sole source of Magic on Amedia ... exactly where the Amedian sentience wants her.
On the planet of Amedia, the sentience that is the World grants Magic to whomever it chooses. Normally, that means someone born of Wizard lineage ... in fact, Wizards have declared it near blasphemy for anyone born Plain to use Magic. Astra Fairweather was born Plain - no Wizard in her lineage, no Magic in her past. Except that Amedia gives her Magic, anyway. On a cold winter night, the World sends its emissary to Astra, urging her to perform Magic for the first time. She does - right before the disbelieving eyes of Wizard André Skyecatcher. Fortunately, Skyecatcher doesn't believe in the Plain/Wizard Magical divide and takes Astra under his wing. With the help of Hucklebee Stonecraft - a Wizard College professor and adviser to Grand Wizard Forturian Stormcloud - he readies Astra to compete in the Summer Apprentice competition. Astra's path becomes even harder when Skyecatcher discovers that Astra's Magic is Instinctive, a powerful form of Magic only the Grand Wizard himself is known to possess. Still, despite the antagonism of her peers, Astra manages to win the friendship of one fellow competitor - and the competition ... just in time for the World to end. Blight, a Wizard banished from Wizard society long before, returns with a plan to kill all Magic by killing all Wizards. At first he slays hundreds - including Stormcloud ... but then he faces Astra, whose Instinctive power and the uncanny skill with which she wields it, drives Blight from the scene, leaving Astra, her teachers, and the other apprentices, to pick up the pieces.
In the wake of Blight's slaughter of Wizards on First of Summer, Astra Fairweather and her twelve fellow apprentices work their hearts out supplying Magic to the Plain folk of Wizard's Reach. They get little in the way of rest and even less in the way of thanks. The only light at the end of their dark tunnel is the hope that the Wizard Council will relieve them before they drop from exhaustion. But when Council relief appears, it comes with insults, veiled accusations, and attitudes than serve to enrage a Plain population already fed up with Wizards and Magic. Worse, Magic is clearly dying: even the simplest spell becomes burdensome, even impossible ... for everyone but Astra. Her Instinctive Magic is as strong as ever - except she can't be everywhere at once and can't tell anyone what she can do, because Instinctive Magic is officially deemed heretical. When word comes that Blight has resumed killing - slaughtering his way up the Mainland coast, heading for Cove City - the Council quickly unveils its plan to stop Blight, to kill Blight. Astra knows that the Council's plan has no chance of success because she's certain Blight is Instinctive, the same as she is: his Magic will be undiminished, even as every other Wizard on Amedia will be hobbled as Magic dies around them.

THE SAGA BEGINS . . . It was supposed to be an honor, a final chance to show off before graduation: A senior year Middie cruise. Pirates + a frontier system + a rookie captain? Good times. Sydney Chambers is the Navy's brightest star until a superior's folly brings a court martial down on her career. Though found innocent, she's still tainted ... and though her Admiralty mentor salvages a captaincy for her, it comes with banishment to the farthest frontier system in the Confederacy. There she must face down two powerful bands of pirates armed only with a Navy ship recently salvaged from the scrap heap ... and only the vaguest idea of who her enemies are, or who her friends might be.

Astra Fairweather finds herself sublimated by Time ... the Time Aspect of Amedia, one of the three distinct minds of the Amedian sentience, her master. Astra in the Avatar - the personal representative, the "puppet" - of Time, one of three such Avatars. Except, one of the Avatars, Forturian Stormcloud, is dead; and a second, Banterell Lightningbolt, has gone mad. All of which leaves Astra as the sole remaining Avatar ... as Amedia's Ambassador or Emissary to humanity.Just as things begin to fall apart.Time undertakes to rebuild Amedian history by moving Astra through time and space: from the landing of the first human colonists to reach the World, five thousand years before, right up to the final day of the current World, with her friends at the very end. It is Astra's job to fix the World ... to make things as they should be once more ... so that Amedia can end the current, broken World and restart things as they should be.WARNING: Some parts of Summer Redux will make more sense if you've read all four of the preceeding novels, The Summer Apprentice, The Fall of Magic, The Winter Chill, and The Spring of Storms.
Christina's saga continue! "Shadows" is the story of Christina Amies growing into her developing Psionic powers and truly becoming The PsiFinder. It's also the start of a lot of growth and development in Christina's wider world: her A&L Locating family; her associations with both the FBI and the Keepers; and much more! It's a year since the events in PsiFinder 1, RELICS, a year that has seen a whirlwind of growth and development in Christinas Amies' world. Her Psionic strength and ability have grown exponentially; she's able to do more with her powers ... and at the same time, she finds herself called on to undertake more and more difficult challenges. She reconnects with an old friend/colleague, FBI agent James Weymore ... which challenges her "entanglement avoidance system" as well as complicating her professional world. Work gets even more complicated when she stumbles on ex-Keeper "Bud," who designates himself as Christina's personal Psionic trainer. Her personal life gets more complicated as her A&L Locating family grows by one: Annie Pitts comes on board as A&L's new receptionist ... and Christina's Little Sister (and everything that having a "sister" entails). And all this is before she runs into the new bad guy in town ... who has taken the Stone of Ages as his own and plans to use it to cleanse humanity with a Psionic flood!
After defeating the pirates infesting 16 Cygni, Sydney Chambers sets out on her career as Military Attaché ... which, under Confederate law, makes her the highest-ranking official in the system. Her first priority is the repair of her ship the Cahan Morrigan, of course, which is handled in the main by Arega Heavy Industries (AHI), Cygni's local spacedock. While in dock Sydney officiates at the wedding of Chloe O'Shaughnassey and Krista Sperry, both of whom she had rescued from pirates. She then expends effort to persuade her parents and her brother to relocate to the 16 Cygni system, for their own good and that of Cygni. Cygni has applied for full membership in the Confederacy, but it is a time at which the future of the Confederacy itself is in doubt. Governmental rot is quite apparent to those in the know, such as Sydney, and she wants her loved ones close in case things fall apart. Meanwhile, the rot in the Confederate government catches up with Sydney and finds Congress replacing her as Military Attaché, which replacement she doesn't mind at all ... except that her replacement is a clownish-looking fop from Frontier Fleet, an organization at the core of Confederate governmental rot ...
The aftermath of Magic's demise finds Astra and her fellow apprentices faced with the task of rescuing those retired Wizards and Wizard children who still live. Can they survive a deadly cold winter long enough to save the survivors? Reality settles over Astra and her fellow apprentices in the form of active hatred of Wizards by Plain folk everywhere. That hatred is expressed without violence on Wizard's Reach, where Plain have long been treated as equals; on the Amedian Mainland, though, violence against those Wizards who still live - the old and retired, as well as the young, abandoned children of the slain Wizards - is become rife. As the sole group of Wizards still in contact with Magic, through Astra, the apprentices have no choice but to mount a rescue effort for all those Wizards, young and old, who stand threatened by Plain violence. But angered Plain folk are not the only threat: A colder winter than anyone can remember also shadows a World where there is no Magic to light heating fires. Since the youngest and the oldest who are most susceptible to such cold, the apprentices are forced to move fast in their rescue efforts ... at the peril of their own lives ... before there is no one left to be saved.
