Annie Glenn was free spirited and beautiful. Before she was brutally murdered, she sang with a rock band at a bar in the small town of Dudley, Arizona and broke some hearts. Annie's live-in boyfriend Kurt was charged with her murder and found not guilty. Seventeen years later, the long decomposed body of another member of Annie's band is found buried behind a house in Dudley. Annie's daughter Rachel, now in her twenties and still not fully recovered from the trauma of finding her mother's body, must deal with new memories dredged up by the discovery, memories from long ago that may put her in danger. She hires former Cochise County Sheriff's detective Brian Flynn, now a private investigator, to look into the case. Flynn in turn lures his longtime lover-adversary Chloe Newcombe away from her job as a victim advocate to help with the investigation. Nominated for the Simon-Schuster Mary Higgins Clark Award, this is the sixth in the Newcombe series and one of the best.
In High Lonesome Road, the third in the Chloe Newcombe series set in the high Arizona desert, the Cochise County Library bookmobile driver is found murdered at one of her stops. When Chloe is called out to assist the woman who discovered the body, she learns that the driver is Erica Hill, an old friend of her brother's from long ago in Venice, California. Erica was beautiful and flamboyant, a former heartbreaker who has changed her life to be a good mother to her sixteen year old son Troy. When Troy is accused of his mother's murder Chloe is convinced he is innocent and sets out to find the real killer, in the process revealing a shocking secret from Erica's past.
Chloe Newcomb has traded in her high-speed New York life for the solitude of the Arizona desert, where she makes half a living as an aid to victims--notifying survivors, acting as an advisor to the shattered. But when she recognizes a man found shot in a lonely cabin as a former friend and lover, Chloe herself could use a shoulder to cry on. Obsessed to discover who killed him and why, she investigates the strange route that brought her lover to the desert and to his violent end.
This is number five in the Chloe Newcombe series. Chloe finds herself a suspect in the murder of Terry Barnett, a gifted carpenter, shot to death in his workshop in Prophecy, Arizona, a former religous community. In a conversation with Chloe before his death, Terry had talked about a mysterious woman, April, and Chloe is convinced that April is somehow connected to his murder. But who is April? The more Chloe investigates--meeting with Heather, Terry's artist wife and Fred, his estranged brother; travelling to Ohio to check into Terry's past-- April becomes more and more an illusion, a dream figure out of the past who may herself have been murdered. A trivia note: Thornton has included the title of every song in the Radiohead album the Bends, somewhere in the book.
