Angel has been a mystery since she first arrived in Morgan's life (Lonely Dancer). Her ability to anticipate others' needs borders on 'magical'. As Vampires are not magical, it is assumed there is another reason for Angel's empathic capabilities. Jessica, Morgan, Adrian, Angel, and Vera go on a road trip to find out what they can about Angel's past, using clues they uncovered protecting Nakoma from sexual predators (Bad Choices).As the family follows the chains of clues, Angel's odd influence over Vera grows. The gender imbalance inside the Sagan clan is discussed in the evenings over beer and burgers as well. Being polyamorous Vampires is always difficult, given the gender imbalance of Vampire turns but no easy solutions present themselves.Clues come together, and the group ends up in the deep woods of Northern Louisiana, looking for a symbol. When they find it, they find something unexpected. Something that will turn upside down not only Angel's life, clan Sagan's life, but the Vampire world in general. A secret within a secret that offers new possibilities, but also leads Jessica to make the worst decision of her century-plus long life.

Adrian is kidnapped directly from an airport in Turkey after attending a computer conference in India. The people behind the kidnapping are the organization that the Human Purists in the US were going to send him to after they had experimented on him (See 'Purity', Hypernaturals 4). Adrian does not stay in captivity for very long and ends up running and hiding all across Eastern Europe from mysterious vans and hovering helicopters. His goal for his month-long journey: Get the Claremont Estate. Helen's winery in the Burgundy region of France. As a hyper-sensed Vampire, Adrian avoids everyone and everything, living off the land, stealing food as needed. His family is in a blind panic as they cannot find him either. The Vampire and the human worlds are going to collide hard this time.

Detective Morgan Olsen is smart and she lives by her own rules. Youngest Homicide Detective on the force, promoted over other, more senior men, she closes her cases: better and faster. Peter Delong, the owner of a series of food trucks is killed. His wife Bianca is arrested for murder. Don Sagan calls Morgan for help on the case. Adrian and Morgan decide it is time to let Don in on the poly side of their life with Helen and Jessica, if not the Vampire 'first family' reasons for it.The case is against Don's clients is lousy and the arresting officer is well known on the force as a problem. As Morgan and Adrian do the interviews the arresting officer should have done, they find that while it was a murder, there is no obvious reason why. No motive. Whoever did it did not care whom they killed.As the Vampire detectives dig into the case, Adrian asks Angel for permission to reveal two massive secrets to his daughter Nakoma. One secret being what he is, and the second being what he did to protect her (Bad Choices).The digging in the case ultimately leads to the motive, a secret the government did not know it had and absolutely wants to keep, and Adrian slowly dying as even a Vampire can only take so much damage before it is fatal. Morgan can't let that happen, and chooses to die with him rather than lose him, leaving Jessica and Helen facing losing two of their spouses at once.Includes the short story 'Vampires from Tulsa', Denise has never been a fan of killing male Vampires that do not pass probation. Jessica is in Pueblo Lorca working in her clinic, with Diana. Morgan and Adrian run down for a visit, but find it's not going to be a vacation when Jessica is kidnapped at gunpoint by using her infant daughter as a hostage, in order to take care of the wounded head of a drug cartel to the north of the clinic. Morgan and Adrian are unable to catch up with the fleeing vehicles. Cert and an extraction team of Crew is sent and a resuce attempt is mounted. Then things get worse.
