The author makes the case that the early church fathers abandoned the teachings of Jesus and adopted in their place Aristotle's hierarchical theory of nature which relegated animals to insignificant, expendable items put on earth only for humans to use in whatever manner they chose. In the process they mistakenly and wrongly attributed this teaching to God and to Jesus. Aristotle's theory has become the norm for thinking about animals ever since playing a significant role in creating an animal dependent world. It accounts for the attitudes of indifference with which not only Christians but the general public regards animals. Though it may be uncomfortable to ask, the question which hardly can be avoided is whether it is following in the footsteps of Jesus to be cruel to animals or is this not the path which was paved with the theories of Aristotle? For Christians who insist they are not cruel people, can it be considered anything other than cruel to participate in using animals for food, clothing, cosmetics, and household items, including hand soap, which have been tortured, treated horribly, and inhumanely killed in producing those products? For Christians, the correct question to ask must surely be, "What would Jesus do," not "What would Aristotle do."

The Voice in the Stone is a novel about the Dominican Priest Meister Eckhart (1260 to 1328), regarded by many scholars, theologians, and devotees as one of the great Christian medieval mystics and one of the most brilliant and important of all Christian thinkers. Meister Eckhart was famous in his own lifetime as a preacher and spiritual leader who preached and taught in Germany and France. He was popular with the Beguines, a religious organization of primarily widowed women, many of whom were attracted to mysticism. One of Eckhart's highest priorities was to teach the ignorant and uneducated so that they could learn the art of living and dying. In this pursuit he gave his sermons in the common dialect which aroused considerable enmity from the clergy to whom Latin was the only appropriate language for giving sermons and who saw no reason for trying to lift the peasants out of their rut of poverty. In the year 1326 Meister Eckhart was charged with heresy by the Archbishop of Cologne, essentially on the grounds that he taught matters that could easily lead people astray. Meister Eckhart died during his trial. A year later, Pope John XXII condemned several of the Meister's writings as heretical whereupon they were removed from the church canon. The Meister was not alive to protest and his writings and good name were disgraced. Only in recent years has the church agreed with critics that Meister Eckhart was a good and orthodox theologian, though it has not lifted the official ban on his work. The Voice in the Stone tells the story of Meister Eckhart's life and describes his central spiritual message of oneness with God and his methodology for achieving that union. Because so few personal facts about Meister Eckhart have survived, the author recounts his story through interactions with different characters as they engage in a series of adventures and brushes with the law in a society obsessed with the fear of heresy. Author's statement: I began attending church about three years ago after a long absence. Not too long after I started, I was surprised to read in the church bulletin that a hunter would be giving a talk at the church. Even more surprising, the pastor announced the talk during the opening remarks at the main service and enthusiastically encouraged the congregation to attend because this hunter could be counted on to give an inspiring Christian testimonial. I was shocked to learn that Christians were attaching this cruel activity of hunting to Jesus and Christianity. It reminded me of stories I had heard long ago when I was growing up about white Christian ministers in the segregated South who gave sermons in which they promoted racial segregation. But I had just moved to an area where hunting was popular and so I was in for even bigger shocks to learn that quite a few Christian churches support hunting and that many Christian hunting organizations have formed which believe that hunting is Christian. This was not the Jesus who I knew growing up as a boy in a small Indiana community. That Jesus did not hunt, and most Christians I had ever known would not have thought so either. An essential element of Jesus' teaching seemed to me to be missing here which was that Jesus' compassion extended not just to human beings but to all creation. The great 20th century theologian Albert Schweitzer understood when he wrote: "Compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to humankind." Schweitzer understood this, and I understood it and so did many other Christians and non-Christians wherever they lived. I just couldn't allow this Christian/hunters paradigm to stand without speaking out against it. The question for me became could I prove what I believed? Was the evidence there to be found in the Bible and in the words of Jesus himself? Was it there in the long stretch of human history visible for everyone to see if it could only be brought to the surface? Three years later, this small book, Is It Christian to Hunt, is the result of my study of these and other issues related to hunting. It is my challenge to Christian hunters and to all Christians who believe it is Christian to hunt.

This is the only way they can save the kingdom, the people, the animals, and the Princess Anna.
