The Ground Ain't Leveled Noway is a full-length play set in a neighborhood named Third Ward, a legendary community in Houston, Texas. At first glance, Third Ward appears to be a marginalized area concentrated with Black Americans and small mom-and-pop shops and diners. But upon closer examination, it translates to much more than that. It becomes a fine example of how a community is critical to shaping the lives and culture of any people. Through the eyes of the playwright, Donyail Linsey, we are introduced to a host of colorful characters who take us on a journey of self discovery. Led by Clancy, we meet his family and friends, all of whom frequent a short-order restaurant affectionately named The Mudflat. In this restaurant, we are served up a large helping of more than just good food. Here, we learn why family and friends are so important to our lives and our development. When an illness strikes Clancy's older brother Sid, it both threatens to destroy as well as provides an opportunity for true unification. The language of the play is as colorful as its characters, providing a glimpse at the dialectical discourse of a rapidly vanishing way of communication between old friends.About the AuthorDonyail Linsey is a playwright from Houston, Texas. He has penned plays such as Black Crows and Spirits of The Mississippi River. At Texas Southern University, he serves as Professor of Technical Theatre, Director, and Scenic Designer. Spirits of the Mississippi RiverBy: Donyail LinseySpirits of the Mississippi River can be summarized into three topics: greed, the Blues, and the supernatural. In the 50's era, the Delta blues is becoming the thing of the past and at this moment gives birth to a new genre of music: rock-'n-roll. Every decade of man's existence, a new form of music always seems to emerge. This play, written about the deep history of Mississippi and its rich principles, lets the reader grasp hold of the dark memories of the past and rewrite the wrong.About the PlaywrightProfessor Linsey taught theatre in the public schools for six years prior to landing a Tech Director position at Texas Southern University, where he has been for the past four years. He is a proud father of two boys, De'Arien and August, and is married to his lovely wife, Jacquelyn U. Linsey. Donyail has been involved as an actor in community theatrical productions well over 30 years at Encore Theatre. In addition to directing, Professor Linsey has penned three two-act plays. Onstage he has directed several plays for Encore Theatre of Houston, TX, and has performed major roles in classical works such as Oedipus, Equus, Macbeth, and Of Mice and Men. He is very passionate about theatre education and often hosts workshops on acting, directing, and technical production.Professor Linsey earned a BA in Theatre from Texas Southern University and a Master's in Theatre from Texas A&M University Commerce.
