Edgar Allan Poe ( born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. He is widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as a whole, and he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction.[1] He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career.[2] Poe was born in Boston, the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. They never formally adopted him, but Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time that his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with the anonymous collection of poems Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. However, Poe later failed as an officer cadet at West Point, declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, and he ultimately parted ways with John Allan. Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several years working for literary journals and periodicals, becoming known for his own style of literary criticism. His work forced him to move among several cities, including Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Richmond in 1836, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin. In January 1845, Poe published his poem "The Raven" to instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two years after its publication. For years, he had been planning to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), though he died before it could be produced. Poe died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents. Poe and his works influenced literature in the United States and around the world, as well as in specialized fields such as cosmology and cryptography. Poe and his work appear throughout popular culture in literature, music, films, and television. A number of his homes are dedicated museums today. The Mystery Writers of America present an annual award known as the Edgar Award for distinguished work in the mystery genre.

Double assassinat dans la rue Morgue met en scène le détective Dupin et l'un de ses amis, qui joue le rôle de narrateur. L'histoire se déroule à Paris, au XIXe siècle. Cependant, la plupart des lieux cités dans la nouvelle, dont la rue Morgue, n'existent pas. Le début de la nouvelle est une réflexion sur l'importance qu'on donne à l'analyse dans l'esprit humain. La suite est un exemple qui décrit l'incroyable capacité d'analyse de Dupin, qui devine à quoi pense son ami juste en observant ses mouvements en marchant dans la rue. Dupin et le narrateur apprennent alors qu'un meurtre déroute les policiers français: on a retrouvé les cadavres de deux femmes de la famille Lespanaye, une mère et sa fille, vivant en vieilles filles dans un immeuble de la rue Morgue. Le corps de la fille présente des marques de strangulation et était violemment encastré dans le conduit de cheminée. Celui de la mère avait la gorge tranchée net, et se trouvait à moitié démembré sur les pavés de la cour derrière l'immeuble. Or, il n'y a ni mobile pour le crime, ni même une explication plausible. Les fenêtres sont fermées et bloquées de l'intérieur mais personne n'a pu s'enfuir par la porte puisque des gens, entendant les cris, s'y sont précipités. Tous les témoins (les voisins ayant entendu une partie de la scène) s'accordent à dire qu'il y avait deux voix, bien distinctes, dont une grave, parlant français. Cependant, personne ne peut s'accorder sur la deuxième qui paraît étrangère à tous les témoins. Ceux-ci sont pourtant de nationalités diverses et variées. Dupin décide de résoudre l'affaire. Grâce à ses contacts dans la police, il peut fouiller le lieu du crime, et grâce aux indices, parvient à la conclusion sans que le lecteur ne le sache à ce moment-là. Avec le sens de la mise en scène qui lui est propre, Dupin décide de mettre une annonce dans le journal signalant qu'il a retrouvé... un orang-outan. Le soir même, un marin ayant signalé la disparition de son orang-outang vient le chercher chez Dupin. Ce dernier lui explique alors sa théorie. Confondu par les conclusions de Dupin, le maître avoue: c'est effectivement son primate le coupable, et c'est lui-même qui était la première voix (il l'avait poursuivi pour le rattraper et l'empêcher de faire une bêtise). La force du primate lui a permis de coincer le corps d'une victime dans le conduit de la cheminée, tête vers le bas, semble-t-il pour cacher sa faute; la seconde personne ayant été poussée vers l'extérieur, où elle s'est désarticulée.

Le Mystère de Marie Roget est une nouvelle de l'écrivain américain Edgar Allan Poe, parue en trois parties en novembre 1842, décembre 1842 et février 1843 dans le Ladies' Companion et traduite en français par Charles Baudelaire pour le recueil Histoires grotesques et sérieuses. Le nom complet de la nouvelle est Le Mystère de Marie Roget, pour faire suite à Double assassinat dans la rue Morgue: le lien entre les deux nouvelles tient au personnage d'Auguste Dupin qui mène l'enquête sur une affaire qui dépasse les capacités de la police. L'enquête du Mystère de Marie Roget se base sur l'affaire réelle du meurtre de Mary Cecilia Rogers survenu à New York en 1841. Dans la nouvelle, l'action est transposée à Paris au lieu de New York, et la Seine remplace l'Hudson River où le corps de Mary Rogers a été retrouvé. Edgar Allan Poe joue entre fiction et réalité à plusieurs niveaux: son personnage fictif Auguste Dupin essaie d'entrevoir la vérité sur l'affaire en se basant uniquement sur des coupures de presse réelles, mais les noms réels des journaux sont maquillés. Comme pour Double assassinat dans la rue Morgue, le récit est narré par un ami de Dupin dont l'identité reste inconnue.
