En 1883, dans la préface de ses Souvenirs d'Enfance et de Jeunesse, Ernest Renan s'exprimait ainsi à propos de sa soeur Henriette: La personne qui a eu la plus grande influence sur ma vie, je veux dire ma soeur Henriette, n'occupe ici presque aucune place. En septembre 1862, un an après la mort de cette précieuse amie, j'écrivis, pour le petit nombre des personnes qui l'avaient connue, un opuscule consacré à son souvenir. Il n'a été tiré qu'à cent exemplaires. Ma soeur était si modeste, elle avait tant d'aversion pour le bruit du monde, que j'aurais cru la voir, de son tombeau, m'adressant des reproches, si j'avais livré ces pages au public. Quelquefois, j'ai eu l'idée de les joindre à ce volume. Puis, j'ai trouvé qu'il y aurait en cela une espèce de profanation. L'opuscule sur ma soeur a été lu avec sympathie par quelques personnes animées pour elle et pour moi d'un sentiment bienveillant. Je ne dois pas exposer une mémoire qui m'est sainte aux jugements rogues qui font partie du droit qu'on acquiert sur un livre en l'achetant. Il m'a semblé qu'en insérant ces pages sur ma soeur dans un volume livré au commerce, je ferais aussi mal que si j'exposais son portrait dans un hôtel des ventes. Cet opuscule ne sera donc réimprimé qu'après ma mort. Peut-être pourra-t-on y joindre alors quelques lettres de mon amie, dont je ferai moi-même par avance le choix.

Publié en 1890, L'Avenir de la science est l'oeuvre ultime d'Ernest Renan, qui meurt deux ans plus tard. Dans cet ouvrage, Renan traite ses rapports complexes avec la religion. Il la critique comme système de pensée tout en affirmant son importance comme facteur d'unification des sociétés humaines ainsi que le danger de s'en détourner trop hâtivement. Il résume la situation en disant: Quand je suis à la ville, je me moque de celui qui va à la messe; mais quand je suis à la campagne, je me moque au contraire de celui qui n'y va pas .

"LES dialogues qui forment la partie la plus importante de ce volume ont été écrits à Versailles pendant le mois de mai 1871. J'avais quitté Paris à la fin d'avril, navré des aberrations dont on y était témoin et bien assuré qu'il n'était possible d'y rendre aucun service à la cause de la raison. Privé de mes livres et séparé de mes travaux, j'employai ces loisirs forcés à faire un retour sur moi-même et à dresser une sorte d'état sommaire de mes croyances philosophiques..."
