Holloway and his crew, while moving a herd of rustled cattle to Trail's End, decide to make extra money by holding up a stage and carrying off the women. The females would be their 'entertainment' until the end of the drive, when they would be sold to the brothel there. What could go wrong? Would any of the women survive? Would the cowboys be outwitted?
The Sojourner's Tale is book two of the Ice Age Sagas Trilogy. A sojourn is a rite of passage for boys when they reach a certain age. They are sent away to experience the world, learn new skills, and develop an appreciation for tribal life. The requirement is no different for Chief Howling Wolf's son, Red Deer. For Howling Wolf, the separation becomes even more painful when the village Shaman, Bright Moon, tells him that while most boys return within a year, Red Deer will be gone five summers. In the beginning, Red Deer looked at his association with a caravan as an adventure, but the days drag on until he meets Great Buffalo. At first, the two boys were adversaries, but circumstances molded them into friends. Their adventures take them, and other caravan members, into the South Pacific where they are faced with new foes, riverdragons (saltwater crocodiles) among them.
Explorer! is historical fiction. That is, the dialogue is fictional, but events and many of the people mentioned were real. Certainly, Walter Wellman was a real person who had vision, determination, and leadership-all traits needed during his attempts to be the first to reach the North Pole. When that goal could no longer be realized, he regrouped his forces and set his sights on being the first to fly across the Atlantic. He conceived this idea right after Beloit, in an aircraft that was little more than a kite with an engine, succeeded in being the first to fly from Calais, France, to Dover, England-a distance of about thirty-five miles. Explorer follows in the wake of The Ice Age Saga trilogy-The Shaman's Song, The Sojourner's Tale, and Crooked Foot. Similarities between The Ice Age trilogy and Explorer! are due to the fact that they are all written as action-adventure stories and are meant to entertain readers of all ages.
While out hunting, Crooked Foot-a boy less than two-hands old-and his grandfather encounter Tawasiki, the-bear-who-roams-along-the-Great-Ice. Crooked Foot remembers nights gathered around the campfires. Old men-hunters from long ago-who loudly told many other hunting stories spoke only in hushed voices of this creature lest the animal hears their words and comes for them. The creature that everyone fears was here now and it gives chase. Crooked Foot is trapped in the debris of a long jam in the bend of the river while the bear paces overhead searching for him. How will he manage to escape? During the night, raiders attack Little Fawn's village. They intend to make everyone a slave of the despot Kam Udo. Can she come up with a plan that will free herself and her people? Can Waving Grass, daughter of Running Buffalo, Chief of the Attikamekey get help from Small Turtle in her search to find lost tribe members? By the time you reach the end of the book you will have answers to these and other questions.
