Es una página muy triste, es una historia de lágrimas y duelo la que vamos á presentar al lector: la vida y muerte de Plácido, la mancha más negra de nuestra historia política y literaria, el baldón más ignominioso que puede echarse en cara á las instituciones y á la tiranía de otros tiempos; la vida y muerte del poeta mártir que hasta hoy sepultada en la oscuridad por la presión mortífera del despotismo aguardaba el día de la libertad para ser reivindicada ante los ojos del mundo.Gran variedad de opiniones y de errores se han emitido acerca del nacimiento de Gabriel de la Concepcion Valdés Plácido, poeta que fué por su vida y penalidades nuestro Tasso, por su muerte nuestro André Cheniér: tiene razon la América Poética de Valparaiso cuando advierte «que fué raro en todo, en su orígen, en su genio, en su muerte.» Alguno le supuso fruto de los amores clandestinos de una señora de alto rango con un negro, su propio esclavo, y esta asercion, repetida por traductores estrangeros, ha sido de las más generalizadas; otros le han querido dar por padres á una blanca de humilde condicion y un africano libre; y un biógrafo que pretende tener datos irrefutables sobre su orígen, dice refiriéndose á su padre que fué «un personage cuyo nombre omitimos en razon del noble y sagrado ministerio que ejercia» y como hijo de madre esclava, le supone tambien esclavo, liberto por la generosidad de varios jóvenes á la manera que lo fueron algo despues Manzano y Echemendia. Pezuela cree á su madre natural de Canarias.
