In seinem gesellschaftskritischen Drama lehnt sich Wedekind gegen die Moralvorstellungen der Wilhelminischen Ara auf. Er problematisiert den Widerspruch zwischen der sexuellen Neugier Heranwachsender und der von Tabus und Intoleranz gepragten Sexualmoral der damaligen Zeit, an der die Protagonisten schlielich zerbrechen.Lange verboten oder zensiert, ist "e;Fruhlings Erwachen"e; heute Teil des Schulkanons in deutschsprachigen Landern.-

Einst rettete der Berliner Chefredakteur Dr. Schon seine Matresse Lulu aus der Gosse, jetzt verkuppelt er sie mit dem senilen Medizinalrat Dr. Goll, um sich selbst gutburgerlich verheiraten zu konnen. Doch Dr. Goll trifft der Schlag, als er Lulu in flagranti mit dem Maler Schwarz erwischt. Lulu heiratet daraufhin den Maler, doch als dieser von der Untreue seiner Frau erfahrt, nimmt er sich das Leben. Als Lulu und Dr. Schon heiraten, scheint alles perfekt zu sein. Doch Lulu kann nicht aus ihrer Haut und empfangt weiterhin ihre Verehrer.
