Sunk far back in the huge leather cushions of his morris chair, old Isaac Flint was thinking, thinking hard. Between narrowed lids, his hard, gray eyes were blinking at the morning sunlight that poured into his private office, high up in the great building he had reared on Wall Street. From his thin lips now and then issued a coil of smoke from the costly cigar he was consuming. His bony legs were crossed, and one foot twitched impatiently. Now and again he tugged at his white mustache.

""Vikings of the Ice"" is a captivating memoir written by George Allan England, chronicling his experiences as a young man on the Newfoundland seal hunt in the early 20th century. The book is a vivid and detailed account of the treacherous journey endured by the author and his fellow hunters as they venture into the icy waters of the North Atlantic in search of seals. England's writing is both descriptive and engaging, bringing the reader along on his journey through the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Newfoundland. He describes the beauty of the natural world, but also the harsh realities of life as a seal hunter, including the dangers of the hunt, the brutal conditions of the ice floes, and the often tragic consequences for both man and animal. Throughout the book, England provides a fascinating glimpse into the culture and traditions of the Newfoundland seal hunt, including the techniques used by the hunters, the role of the ship's captain, and the camaraderie among the crew. He also explores the economic and political forces that drove the industry, as well as the controversy surrounding the hunt and its impact on the seal population. Overall, ""Vikings of the Ice"" is a gripping and insightful memoir that offers a unique perspective on a little-known aspect of Canadian history. It is a must-read for anyone interested in adventure, exploration, and the natural world. This is a new release of the original 1924 edition. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. 1924. This book was written as the result of some six weeks' experience on two sealing steamers, the Terra Nova and the Eagle, out of St. John's, Newfoundland. Its purpose is to fill a gap which has persisted astonishingly long. For many years the Newfoundland seal hunt has been the greatest hunt in the world, and that so little has been written about it is a mystery. The world as a whole knows little of it. Even many Newfoundlanders of the better class remain comparatively ignorant of this gorgeous epic of violence, hardship and bloodshed. In so far as personal observation can avail, I have tried to record and portray all the essential features of Newfoundland sealing. Contents: Prelusions; The World's Greatest Hunt; Northward Ho!; Shaking Down; Into the Ice; Worship 'Tweendecks; Baptism of Blood; The Life of a Seal; The Hunt Continues; An Evening with the Muses; Laboring On; Past and Present; A Touch of Near-Tragedy; A Visit from the Air; Odds and Ends; The Sealer and His Ways; Bombs; A Bit of History; A Short Chapter on a Long Sunday; Powers of Darkness; Mucking Along; A Brush with Hoods; Gunners and Dogs!; Newfoundland Contrasts; A Newfoundland Outport; Trailing the Herd; And Still We Slaughter; Tails and Tobacco; and Homeward Bound.

Dimly, like the daybreak glimmer of a sky long wrapped in fogs, a sign of consciousness began to dawn in the face of the tranced girl. Once more the breath of life began to stir in that full bosom, to which again a vital warmth had on this day of days crept slowly back. And as she lay there, prone upon the dusty floor, her beautiful face buried and shielded in the hollow of her arm, a sigh welled from her lips.

A thousand years of darkness and decay! A thousand years of blight, brutality, and atavism; of Nature overwhelming all man's work, of crumbling cities and of forgotten civilization, of stupefaction, of death! A thousand years of night! Two human beings, all alone in that vast wilderness-a woman and a man.

The room was strange as the man, himself, who dwelt there. It seemed, in a way, the outward expression of his inner personality. He had ordered it built from his own plans, to please a whim of his restless mind, on top of the gigantic skyscraper that formed part of his properties. Windows boldly fronted all four cardinal compass-points-huge, plate-glass windows that gave a view unequaled in its sweep and power. The room seemed an eagle's nest perched on the summit of a man-made crag. The Arabic name that he had given it-Niss'rosh-meant just that. Singular place indeed, well-harmonized with its master. Through the westward windows, umbers and pearls of dying day, smudged across a smoky sky, now shadowed trophy-covered walls. This light, subdued and somber though it was, slowly fading, verging toward a night of May, disclosed unusual furnishings.

"Forgive me!" he whispered. "I-I forgot myself, a moment. Not yet-no, not yet. You're right, Beatrice. A thousand things are pressing to be done. And love-must wait!" He clenched his fists and strode to the edge of the chasm, where, for a while, he stood alone and silent, gazing far down and away, mastering himself, striving to get himself in leash once more. Then suddenly he turned and smiled. "Come, Beta," said he. "All this must be forgotten. Let's get to work. The whole world's waiting for us, for our labor.
