Burton Lazars is a small village just outside Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire. When Gladys lived there, which she did for several years, she found the village has a rich history. Using her talents as a researcher and author she has brought alive, in this book, a little of the history of this part of rural England.
The Chartists were a working class movement for political reform which existed in Britain during the period 1838 to 1857. They were named after the People's Charter, published in 1838 and had strong support in many working class areas, including Staffordshire. The publication of the charter led to uprising, riots and an eventual crackdown by the Government. Many Chartists were arrested and transported to the colonies. Staffordshire born Gladys has researched some of the Staffordshire Chartists and their transportation to Van Dieman's land; modern day Tasmania.
After returning to Newcastle under Lyme, Gladys finished her book on researching a family tree (Twigs, Twiglets and Branches). In the course of her research she encountered many uplifting stories, but also some stories of those who are less fortunate. This led her research to the various poor laws and eventually to the institution known as 'the workhouse'. This book is about the Newcastle under Lyme workhouse, some of its history and the lives of the inmates, why they were there and what happened to them.
Researching your family history can take a lifetime. It can be very frustrating but also rewarding. Gladys has been exploring her genealogy for many years. She has encountered pitfalls and brick walls, but has produced a comprehensive tree that is the envy of many people. Using the story of her research, she takes us through the process of her investigations and gives us an insight into how we could build our own family tree.
As a spiritual teacher, Gladys leads by example. In this inspirational tome, she tells of her own path as a spiritual seeker and how this has enabled her to be the teacher we know and love. This book is a companion to Gladys's autobiography 'A Long and Winding Road - The Life and Travels of a Spiritual Wanderer'. 'Gladys is an inspirational teacher and friend. I don't know whether I would have got so far without her friendship and guidance.' Simon Hall
