Sur le Mahdi de 1885, je ne crois pas avoir grand'chose à vous apprendre qui n'ait déjà été dit. La presse, d'ailleurs, se charge de satisfaire votre curiosité mieux que je ne saurais le faire et vous a dit déjà tout ce qu'on sait de lui, et même plus qu'on n'en sait. Heureusement, dans ce monde, et surtout dans le monde musulman, l'histoire se répète si étrangement que vous raconter les aventures des Mahdi d'autrefois, c'est déjà vous faire par avance l'histoire du Mahdi d'aujourd'hui, son histoire passée, présente et future. Vous savez, en effet, que le prophète d'aujourd'hui n'est point le premier de son espèce, pas plus qu'il n'en sera le dernier. Il y a eu des Mahdis avant lui et il y en aura après lui. L'histoire de ses prestiges, de ses promesses, de ses succès et, tôt ou tard, de la déception finale, toujours inévitable, a déjà retenti plus d'une fois dans l'Islam et retentira plus d'une fois encore. On a attendu le Mahdi dès les premiers jours de l'Islam et il y aura des Mahdis tant qu'il y aura un musulman. Nous remonterons donc, si vous le permettez bien, du 28 février de l'an de grâce 1885 - du 13djoumâdâ l'oulâ de l'année 1302 de l'hégire - à l'an 622 de notre ère, à l'an I de l'ère musulmane.
