John Donne tenía cincuenta y dos años cuando escribió esta obra de una actualidad y una belleza sorprendentes. Tras un ataque de tifus, Donne cayó gravemente enfermo en 1623 y, a raíz del padecimiento que ello le supuso, escribió sus Meditaciones. Ente ellas, se encuentra la Meditación 17, conocida por servir de base al título de la novela de Hemingway, ¿Por quién doblan las campanas?: "Ninguna persona es una isla; la muerte de cualquiera me afecta, porque me encuentro unido a toda la humanidad; por eso, nunca preguntes por quién doblan las campanas; doblan por ti." La muerte, el amor y la presencia de Dios conforman el andamiaje de estas meditaciones, pero cada una de ellas ejerce su fuerza de una manera distinta, poética y profunda. Como señala Octavio Paz, "Donne fue siempre el mismo hombre. Mejor dicho: la misma dualidad. Ser de pasión y reflexión: vive y se mira vivir.".
