Juan de Mariana (1536 - 1624) fue un jesuita, teólogo e historiador español. Su De rege et regis institutione, fue quemado en 1610 como subversivo por el parlamento de París tras el asesinato de Enrique IV de Francia; según sus acusadores, esta obra había dado legitimidad al tiranicidio, ya que su doctrina fue relacionada con el anterior asesinato de Enrique III de Francia. Asimismo, "marianos" eran llamados los revolucionarios franceses de 1789, que derrocaron la monarquía, en cuanto que seguidores del pensamiento de Juan de Mariana acerca de la legitimidad del tiranicidio. En base a ello muchos aducen que la "Mariana", símbolo de aquella revolución, deriva de esa circunstancia. LA MONEDA DE VELLÓN es un alegato tajante contra la manipulación del valor de la moneda, algo que por diversos medios se sigue haciendo en la actualidad.
