This history of the Prophet Joseph Smith, originally entitled, "The History of Mother Smith, by Herself," was written at the dictation of Lucy Smith, mother of the Prophet, by Mrs. Martha Jane Knowlton Coray who acted as her amanuensis. It was taken from the words of Mother Smith and dictated from memory mostly, but she also made use of such historical memoranda of the events related as were within her reach. Of the original manuscript one copy was taken which was left with Lucy Smith, while the original was retained by the writer. This original, Mrs. Coray held in her possession until her arrival in Utah, when she subsequently deposited a copy of it with President Brigham Young.

Human wellbeing and behaviour does not begin at infancy. The wellbeing of the mother is paramount to the wellbeing of the fetus. Smoking throughout pregnancy is well known to have an adverse effect on the fetus. Previous research has focused primarily on fetal behaviour later than 30 gestational weeks and on either spontaneous or elicited behaviour. The present research incorporated three main studies. The first of these was to compare the acute with the chronic effects of smoking on spontaneous behaviour in fetuses of younger gestational age (14, 18 and 22 weeks). The second and third were to compare the acute with the chronic effects of smoking on fetal habituation patterns at 30 and 34 weeks gestational age. The acute and chronic effects of smoking on the fetus were found to vary across gestational age. Differences in behaviour between the smoking groups and the non-smoking group suggest the possibility that exposure to maternal smoking impairs neurological functioning. This may be an indication of later neuro-behavioural difficulties in child and adult-hood.

History of Joseph Smith, by His Mother is a biography of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, according to his mother, Lucy Mack Smith. Shortly following the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, and into 1845, Lucy Mack Smith dictated her recollections and family story to Nauvoo schoolteacher Martha Jane Coray who compiled these books of notes and other sources into a manuscript. Publication of the book came with the great controversy. After its publication, Brigham Young declared the book to be a "tissue of lies" and wanted corrections made. Young possibly opposed the book because of his own conflicts with its publisher, Orson Pratt. Lucy Smith portrayed the Smith family as the legitimate leaders of the church, which Young may also have seen as a challenge to his leadership.
